We re going to the hotel where it originated and we ll be eating at Cafe Zacher Wien (Sacher Hotel). And it is a bit of a walk. It is a bit of a walk for sure. It is like 30 minutes according to Google Maps. Yes. So but this is our first time to explore Vienna (Wien) on foot so we re actually quite excited and yeah we ll show you a bit of the journey along the way. Now let s go earn our cake. I went with the classic I ordered the Sachertorte so if you take a look here it has got a little chocolate seel letting you know it if the official. The original. The original. And also this little paper Sacher the original since 1832. And if I open this they say they make they make this cake fresh every single day and you can enjoy it in Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck or in Graz. They made the chocolate cake with apricot jam, a little bit of cream on the side. It has subtle flavors. I ordered a iced chocolate. Iced hot chocolate (Wiener Eisschokolade mit Schlagobers). Ice chocolate. With ice cream, whipped cream and these little pralines on top. OMG. It is so good. I ve already had some. In case you hadn t noticed. I think we ve noticed. Haha. It is just such a rich chocolate. We figured we would try two different cakes. Yep. So Sam do you remember which one you got? Yes, I am trying the Liliput (Original Sacher Gewürzgugelhupf) and this is another Viennese specialty. Yeah. So why don t we have a dissection here. So it is a ring cake with spices, ginger, candied orange. That looks so good. Alright Mister. So for your drink he got the Wiener Melange. The wiener melange. So basically that is an espresso with milk and whipped cream. Oh la lah. Here is the bill. Alrighty so 26 Euros total. Basically 13 per person. Yeah. And the most expensive thing that we ordered was your drink. So yeah, you obviously come here for the ambience. The experience but also the cake is delicious. I have to say and we do recommend you guys come here. And now let s go walk off all that sugar. We need to empathize with their situation. For example, if you want to help old people, you might find that they want to keep the ability to walk around. In your conversations, they might share with you different ways they can do that. Later into the interview you ll want to dig a little deeper, look for personal stories or situations where things became difficult. Ideally, you redo the process with many people with the same problem. Step 2: Define the Problem Looking at the interviews, you can now understand the actual needs that people are trying to fulfill with certain activities. One way to do that is to underline the verbs or activities that the people mentioned when talking about their problems: like going for a walk, meeting old friends for tea, or simply going grocery shopping around the corner store. You might realize it s not so much about going out, but more about staying in touch. After your analysis, formulate a problem statement: “Some elderly are afraid to be lonely. The want to stay connected.” Step 3: Ideate Now focus only on the problem statement and come up with ideas that solve the problem. The point is not to get a perfect idea, but rather to come up with as many ideas: like unique virtual reality experiences, senior friendly hover boards or a modified pushcart. Whatever it is, sketch up your best ideas and show them to the people you are trying to help, so you get their feedback. Step 4: Prototype Now take a moment to reflect on what you have learned from your conversations about the different ideas. Ask yourself, how does your idea fit in the context of people s actual lives. Your solution could be a combination of a new idea and what is already being used. Then connect the dots, sketch up your final solution and go build a real prototype that s just good enough to be tested. Step 5: Test Now test your prototype with actual users. Don t defend your idea in case people don t like it, the point is to learn what works and what didn t, so any feedback is great. Then go back to ideation or prototyping and apply your learning. Repeat the process until you have a prototype that works and solves the real problem. Now you are ready to change the world or open shop. Ask This Old House landscape designer Jenn Nawada installs a water feature that collects and reuses rainwater. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 1 day Cost: $5,000 and up Skill Level: Expert Tools List for Installing a Rainwater Collection Water Feature: Excavator Shovel Rake Landscape gloves Shopping List: Structural pond blocks Pump vault pond block Pond pump Landscape fabric Stones Basalt columns with 1” holes Downspout filter 1” PVC and fittings Fieldstone Steps: 1. Before digging, always contact the local utility marking service to locate any underground pipes or wires in the work area. 2. Dig a hole where you plan to install the water feature. It should be about two feet deep. This can be done quickly with an excavator. 3. Use the rake to rake out any rocks in the soil until the base is a flat, smooth surface. 4. Decide where to locate the pump. Using a shovel, dig out a hole to hold the pump vault. 5. Lay the landscape fabric in the hole. 6. Place the rubber liner on top of the landscape fabric. It should be the double the size so it can wrap around the structural blocks once they are in place. 7. Lay another piece of landscape fabric on top of the rubber liner to protect the rubber from the structural blocks. 8. Place the pump vault and the structural blocks in place in the hole. They should lay flat and level. 9. Backfill between the structural blocks and the liner with stones. 10. Dig a hole underneath the nearest downspout for the downspout filter. Then, put it in place. Run a pipe from the filter to the reservoir. 11. Plumb the pump and the pipes, then run the pipes through the basalt columns. 12. Put the basalt columns in place. You can use flat stones to balance them. 13. Make a perimeter around the water feature using the field stone. 14. Fill in the perimeter with stones. 15. Fold the rubber liner over the structural blocks and backfill with soil. Add plantings if desired.
