Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva patches a chipped wood floor using a Dutchman and hand tools. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 4 hours Cost: $50 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Patching a Wood Floor: Drill [https://amzn.to/2zjlmkc] Block plane [https://amzn.to/2ZalrWB] Hand saw [https://amzn.to/31Y2DGX] Utility knife [https://amzn.to/31WhtOc] Chisel [https://amzn.to/2L9TB2K] Forstner bit [https://amzn.to/2TYz6dl] (optional) Shopping List: Polyurethane glue [https://amzn.to/2Zdno4G] Wood glue [https://amzn.to/31X8DzN] Rags [https://amzn.to/2HotVhR] Floorboard [https://amzn.to/2ZncNiT] (same type as rest of floor) Prestain [https://amzn.to/31WKCc6] Stain [https://amzn.to/2NyJK9s] Painters tape [https://amzn.to/2KUaKPn] Polyurethane [https://amzn.to/2zjqche] Steps: 1. Drill a hole through the chipped part of the floor using a countersink bit. Drop a little bit of water in the hole, then add some polyurethane glue. 2. Drive a screw through the hole, securing the floorboard back to the floor. 3. If you saved the chipped piece of the floor, you can glue it back on the floor with wood glue. Be sure to cover all the exposed wood with glue before re-securing the patch. 4. Wipe off any excess glue on the patch with a wet rag. 5. If you don’t have the chipped piece or it doesn’t fit back into the hole perfectly, you’ll need to make a Dutchman. Examine the floorboard and find a section of it that matches the grain around the rest of the floor boards near the chip. 6. True up the edge of the floorboard chosen for the patch using a block plane. 7. Cut the patch roughly to size using a hand saw. First, rip the patch to rough width. Then rip the patch in half so it’s half the thickness of the floorboard. 8. Square one end of the Dutchman using the block plane. 9. Hold the Dutchman up to the section of the floor requiring the patch. Mark the length just slightly past where the chip ends. 10. Cut the Dutchman to length based on the mark. 11. Hold the Dutchman over the chip. Trace around the outside of the patch using the utility knife. 12. Chisel out the outlined section of the floor roughly the thickness of the patch. To save time, you can use a drill with a forstner bit and then switch to the hand chisel for fine tuning. 13. Pitch the Dutchman at an angle and shave off a little bevel on each side with the block plane so the patch will fit easier in the floor. 14. Once the Dutchman fits the hole, prestain it with a rag. Let the stain sit for about five minutes. 15. Stain the Dutchman with a rag. Let it dry for a few minutes. 16. Apply wood glue to the hole in the floor. Make sure all the raw wood is covered with glue. Wipe off excess glue with a rag. 17. Tape around the patch and let it sit overnight. After about 24 hours, add a few coats of polyurethane until the patch blends in with the rest of the floor. Resources: Everything Tom used for this project, including the hand saw, block plane, utility knife, and stain, can be found at home centers. Tom used flooring saved by the homeowner, but flooring can also be found at home centers, lumber yards, and flooring retailers. For a patch, use the same type of wood and look for a piece that has a similar grain to the floor being patched. Tom secured the Dutchman to the floor using wood glue [https://amzn.to/31X8DzN] and polyurethane glue [https://amzn.to/33Wf203], both manufactured by Gorilla Glue (http://www.gorillatough.com/). The workbench Tom made the Dutchman on is manufactured by Kreg (https://www.kregtool.com/). This is the first episode of a new series here on Kick the Grind. It s going to be called travel stories, and I ll be explaining some of the wild adventures behind the videos you see here. This was all filmed in and around Leticia, Colombia. This part of the country is right on the border between Brazil, and Peru. Here many people take river cruises to the Peruvian Amazon, or wander off into the depths of Brazilian amazon in search for a Shaman. Kicking it off, is answering the number 1 question I had after posting the amazon jungle adventure challenge videos, and then the experience finding a shaman in the Brazilian rainforest. In this video I explain a bit more of what happened in the forests of South America, and also explain our encounter with Huito, a seed that creates a blue pigment when mixed with water. It s also called Jagua Tattooing when you use this deep colour to stain your hair, skin, hands, etc. We encountered this strange plant many times while doing our river cruise, and began to apply it shortly after fishing for piranhas. When your Jagua Tattoo is first applied it looks clear. Fast forward a day later, and it looks like you have crazy full hand tattoos. We also were painted with Annatto, also known as Achiote or Colorau. It s an orange pigment from the seed of a tree. These seeds produce a bright orange paste that is used to paint ornamental markings on the skin. It is also used as a food colorant in many dishes (and processed foods) around the world. If you want make it on the hand, just like the video, leave me a nice comment, and end it with the motto "Experiences over Possessions" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ϟ My Camera Gear ϟ Main Camera: http://geni.us/MyCamera My Favourite Lens: http://geni.us/Sony1635mm My 2nd Favourite Lens: http://geni.us/Sony90mm Low Light/Portrait Lens: http://geni.us/Sony55mm Love this Microphone: http://geni.us/RODEMic My SD Cards: http://geni.us/SanDiskPRO Camera Clips: http://geni.us/PDClip Cool Gadget to switch Lenses: http://geni.us/PDLensKit My Camera Strap: http://geni.us/PDStrap Keeping Safe on Rainy Days: http://geni.us/PDRainShell Great Tripod with a Funny Name: http://geni.us/Tripod This new Gimbal I love: http://geni.us/NewGimbal My Flying Camera: http://geni.us/DJI4K ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ♥ Friends ♥ Large Minority Adventure Holidays: https://www.largeminority.travel/ Caspar Diederik: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7B7roL_ru8QS2NK8Yf4vjg ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ♫ Music ♫ "Happiness" - Funky Fella "Have Some Love" - Funky Fella "Hitchhikers guide" - Niklas Ahlström "Jungle Walking" - Tomas Skyldeberg "Getting Tipsy 2" - Martin Landh from Epidemic Sound (http://www.epidemicsound.com) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PHOTOS USED: Colorau seeds: Leonardo Ré-Jorge Huito Flower: João Medeiros Huito Fruit: Alex Popovkin, Bahia, Brazil ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☎ Say Hi Here ☎ ✧ Snapchat: kickthegrind ✧ Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/kickthegrind ✧ Tweetz: http://www.twitter.com/KickTheGrind ✧ Facebook Fanpage: http://www.facebook.com/KicktheGrindTV ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ✯ Experiences over Possessions ✯ Kick the Grind ✯ -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jump into 2018 with me as I show my Top 5 (+1) places I visited this past year. On Kick the Grind, we travel to strange, unique, and amazing places. We search out the best travel experiences, and I ve picked my top recommendations for your travel plans this year. Real travel experiences are harder and harder to come by these days. I have to search pretty hard to find the gems. Big ups to Vice Magazine and Atlas Obscura for the inspiration this past year. These are all places to visit before you die, and some of the most amazing places I ve come across in 2017. ---- #1 The Haro Wine fight Also known as La Batalla de Vino, this crazy festival happens every year on June 29th in the small town of Haro in Rioja, Basque Country, Spain. For a little under an hour, locals pour hundreds of gallons of delicious Spanish red wine on each other to celebrate a Patron Saint. VIDEO LINK: NONE ---- #2 The Baby Jumping Festival Simply known as El Colacho to the locals of the small town of Castrillo de Murcia, Burgos, Spain. This cool festival involves a man dressed as a yellow devil whipping teenagers and jumping over newborn babies. On the surface it seems crazy and reckless... Who would ever put their baby on the street to be jumped over? The reality is quite beautiful, and extra care is taken with the babies. When El Colacho (the devil) jumps over the baby, it is very similar to a baptism. The child is cleansed of the natural sin we are all born with, and it s a very exciting day for the family of the children. The festival takes place on the first Sunday after Corpus Christi, so June 3rd in 2018 VIDEO LINK: https://youtu.be/bXXgB06y5xU ---- #3 The Exploding Hammer Festival This festival is unbelievable. Men strap homemade explosives on sledgehammers and slam them into a field of small rocks. They do this every February 28th in the tiny Mexican Town of San Juan de la Vega in Guanajuato, Mexico to celebrate John the Baptist. VIDEO LINK: https://youtu.be/vB9IdhcFAvY ---- #4 Toraja Regency Funeral Rites Easily one of wildest travel experiences. The Torajan people of Central Sulawesi have very incredible rituals and beliefs around death. When someone dies, they are simply called "sick" and are kept in the house of the family. They are still treated like they are very much alive. Food is bought to them, music is played, the family comes to ask them questions. When ready, the family has a extremely elaborate and expensive funeral to send them off to the afterlife. Experiencing this will change your life, and also your views on death. If you d like to see a Ma Ne Ne, which is the opening of the coffins and is commonly called "The Waking Dead Festival" you have to visit in August or September. Also this is the time of year to see the Funerals. It is the best time to see these amazing funeral rites. VIDEO LINK: COMING SOON ---- #5 Nido De Quetzalcoatl Easily the Coolest AirBnn in Mexico (or maybe the world) this giant snake building is tucked into a small valley in Naucalpan, Mexico State. Javier Senosiain created this amazing structure while following his principles of Organic Architecture; building with natural shapes and forms, while respecting the surrounding environment. AirBnb Link: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/10153978 VIDEO LINK: COMING SOON ---- #6 Amazonian Traditional Medicine Slowly becoming mainstream is a big threat to experiencing real Amazonian Medicine with a legitimate shaman. As more and more people seek out these spiritual experiences, the more unqualified people want to take money from tourists. Asking locally is usually a better way to find what you re looking for. A friend and I went to Leticia, Colombia to find these experiences. Ask This Old House mason Mark McCullough demonstrates how to clean soot out of brick using acid. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 2 hours Cost: $50 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Cleaning Brick: 2 Buckets 2 Brushes Shopping List: Acidic masonry cleaner Drop cloths Tarps Containment sock (or old towels) Safety goggles Rubber gloves Steps: • Protect the area around the bricks being cleaned. Lay down a drop cloth first to prevent any scratching from materials, then cover that with a plastic tarp. • Place the containment sock around the bricks being cleaned on top of the tarp to further contain the mess. • Before handling the acidic cleaner, put on rubber gloves and goggles to protect yourself from serious burns. • Dry brush the surface of the brick to remove any loose particles. • Fill the first bucket with only water. • Dip the brush into the bucket of water and dampen the brick until it’s thoroughly soaked. • Fill the next bucket halfway with water. Then pour the masonry cleaner into the bucket of water. It’s important to pour the masonry cleaner into the water instead of the other way around to prevent any burns from the acid. • Dip a second brush into the masonry cleaner mixture, then gently apply the brush to the brick. • Let the brick absorb the cleaner for 3-5 minutes, then use the water brush to scrub any residue off the brick. • Repeat this process until the brick is clean. If the desired results are not achieved, strengthen the concentration of the cleaner in the bucket and also scrub a little harder than during the first pass. Resources: Mark cleaned the brick with Sure Klean 600 acidic cleaner, manufactured by Prosoco (http://www.prosoco.com ). It can be found at masonry supply stores and sometimes at painting supply stores. This cleaner should not be confused with muriatic acid, which is stronger and more dangerous. The other materials used for this project, including buckets, brushes, drop cloths, gloves, and goggles, can be found at home centers. Expert advice on this project was provided by MJM Masonry (http://www.mjmmasonry.com).
