Just as Julia Child revolutionized French food, so did Cecilia Chiang with Chinese cuisine. After moving to the United States in 1959, Cecilia launched the Mandarin in San Francisco. The restaurant introduced foods like Peking duck, pot stickers and hot and sour soup to an American audience, and began to attract celebrities and foodies from across the country. Her cooking has set a standard for Chinese food in America, and has influenced everyone from Alice Waters to James Beard. Ask This Old House mason Mark McCullough explains how to match mortar for repointing jobs. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 1 hour Cost: $50 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Matching Mortar: Buckets Trowel Shopping List: Lime Sand Portland cement Scrap wood Steps: 1. If the mortar is not gray, then a dye was used. Take a small sample of the mortar, bring it to the nearest brickyard, and ask them to match the color for you. 2. If the mortar is gray, you might be able to get a close match with the premixed bags of mortar. The following steps are how to attempt an exact color match. 3. Take a couple small buckets and add proportions of lime and Portland cement. Keep close track of how much of each you put in each bucket. Adding more lime will make the mortar lighter and adding more Portland cement will make it darker. 4. Take two larger buckets with equal proportions of sand in them. Add the smaller buckets with the different lime/Portland cement mixtures to the buckets of sand and mix them with the trowel. 5. Add a little bit of water to each bucket and mix up the mortar. Add more water as necessary until the mortar is roughly an oatmeal texture. 6. Scoop out a small amount of each mixture onto the scrap wood with the trowel and very carefully peel back the blob so only a thin layer is on the wood. This will allow the mortar to dry faster. 7. Allow the mortar to dry and compare it to the joints requiring repointing. Keeping in mind that the mortar will continue to get lighter as it dries, pick the mixture that matches the mortar best. Use the same proportions as the ones you originally wrote down to mix a larger batch of mortar and begin repointing. Resources: Matching mortar can be a trial-and-error job. Keep track of the quantities of lime, sand, and Portland cement used in each test sample and let each sample dry before matching it to the mortar being repointed. If the mortar is not gray, then it has a dye added to it. Locate the nearest brickyard and ask someone there to help match the color. Most of the materials required for matching and making mortar and also for repointing can be found at home centers and brickyards. Without neutrons, harnessing nuclear energy would be impossible. Try Audible free for 30 days: http://audible.com/veritasium I have a new documentary coming out in a few months - sign up here to be notified and see a sneak preview: http://vitamaniathemovie.com Special thanks to Patreon supporters: Tony Fadell, Donal Botkin, Michael Krugman, Jeff Straathof, Zach Mueller, Ron Neal, Nathan Hansen, Yildiz Kabaran, Terrance Snow A few years ago I made a documentary about uranium, radioactivity and radiation. I always thought of the characters in our story as the scientists and maybe the uranium nucleus itself. It was only through making the documentary that I realized the real hero of the story is the neutron. Without a neutral nuclear particle, it would be virtually impossible to release the energy from the nucleus. But with it, and the idea of a chain reaction, nuclear energy went from science fiction to reality. That is something I had not grasped as clearly before and it motivated me to make this video. This is the top spot for urban exploration in Mexico. El partenón de Negro Durazo is an abandoned mansion on the coast of Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, Mexico. This building was the party home of the corrupt police chief, Arturo Durazo Moreno. Nicknamed "The Black" Durazo, he stole millions of taxpayer money to build extravagant homes all over the country. Exploring this abandoned millionaires mansion has been on my to-do list for years. I teamed up with my travel vlogger bro Exploring with Cody, and Actress Mariannela Cataño to make this happen. This is one of Mexico s most famous abandoned places! Negro Durazo was Mexico City s Chief of Police from 1976 to 1982. The beach mansion was constructed in 1979, and abandoned only a few years later. The Partenon was constructed to look similar to the actual Parthenon inside the greek Acropolis in Athens. Negro Durazo only had a couple years of partying before being caught and locked up. He spent 10 years in jail, and then died in the year 2000. The abandoned home has been shut down since 1985. That s 32 years ago. I was it had everything still inside! Scary? Creepy? Cool? Our Lisbon Travel Guide covers what we consider to be the best attractions, food experiences and top things to do in the city. Lisbon is one of our favorite cities in the world and to have an opportunity to revisit again with my parents was an opportunity we jumped at. With only three days to visit Lisbon and show them all of our favorite museums, landmarks, eateries and places to shop we had our work cut out for us. However, we feel our Lisbon City Guide covers the essentials and allows you to feel as though you re moving around more like a local as opposed to a tourist. Now let s explore things to do in Lisbon, Portugal! We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won t find in a typical Lisbon tourism brochure, Lisbon itinerary or Lisbon city tour also known as Lisboa, Portuguesa. 20 Things to do in Lisbon, Portugal Travel Video Transcript: We feel like we know this city well, so in this Lisbon travel guide we’re going to show you around what we think are some of the best attractions. We only had 3 days in the city this time around, so this Lisbon itinerary will be perfect for any of you visiting on a long weekend escape. We kicked off our first morning with a ride on Lisbon’s most iconic tram line:#28 bound for panoramic vistas and a hilltop castle. After postcard perfect views looking down over Alfama we went towards the castle, with a little detour offering a bit of street art. St George Castle is a Moorish castle that looks down over the historic centre and the Tagus River. It’s one of the main tourist landmarks in the city and you get great views of Lisbon. We circled back to visit the Jeronimos Monastery. Construction of this monastery was ordered by King Manuel, who selected the religious order of Hieronymite monks to occupy the monastery. Pastéis de nata were created by the monks at the Jerónimos Monastery, and seeing as we were right next door, this was a very logical stop. After browsing at the Sunday Market we walked over to the Santa Justa Elevator, which is the only street lift in Lisbon for public service. We hope you enjoyed our Lisbon travel guide and found it useful for planning your own trip. If you have any other suggestions of things to do in Lisbon please share those in the comments below. This is part of our Travel in Portugal video series showcasing Portuguese food, Portuguese culture and Portuguese cuisine. Music by Birocratic: https://birocratic.bandcamp.com/

Guerrero Mexico has always been on my list of places to go and things to see. The state is beautiful, and doesn t get too many visitors besides Acapulco. We spent a weekend exploring this area, and here is our list of top things to do in Zihuantanejo. The Fish Market Every morning at 7:30am down by the basketball court on Paseo del Pescador street, the fishermen lay our their catch for local restaurant owners to purchase for the day. It s a pretty busy spot that early in the morning, and makes for a great way to grab some good photos and start your day. The Christ Statue Playa las Gatas is one of the most famous beaches in Zihuatanejo. Here, you come relax and take in the setting sun over the Pacific, and enjoy a drink at any of the beach bars that line the coast. Just off the break water there is a hidden underwater statue of Jesus, with arms outstretched just a few meters below the surface. You can rent snorkels, masks, and fins. Swim out to the buoy attached to his arm and get a view of this interesting attraction Pozoleria Santa Prisca Every Thursday this restaurant opens to serve this extremely traditional soup to whoever is brave enough to wait in line. Even if you ve tried it before... you have to try it here. This is some of the best Pozole I ve had in Mexico. Chili, corn, chicken, it s delicious. You can make reservations to beat the line. We recommend doing it. El Partenon de Negro Durazo This abandoned party house was owned by a corrupt police chief who used tax dollars to build it. He picked a beautiful location overlooking Playa la Ropa, contructed a greek style mansion, called it El Partenon, and then went to jail a few years later. It is now in incredible shape after been abandoned for several decades, and worth checking out (by appointment). It really is a special and unique attraction Mezcalerias One of my absolute favourite drinks world wide is Mezcal. With thousands of varieties, a very interesting history, and lots of establishments devoted solely to it... You have to spend some time in one of the many mezcalerias in Zihuatanejo, Mexico. Well, here we are. It s the final episode of Crash Course Film Criticism and we re going to chat about one of the more polarizing films ever made: Stanley Kubrick s 2001: A Space Odyssey. On the surface, 2001 tells the story of human history as related to technology and some kind of alien influence. But, if we go deeper, there s a lot to this film about evolution and how technology might spell our end... or at least our change. Join Michael Aranda one more time for this great Science Fiction masterpiece. *** Check out all 15 films we ll be talking about below!!! Citizen Kane Aliens Where Are My Children? Selma In the Mood For Love Do the Right Thing Lost In Translation Apocalypse Now Pan s Labyrinth The Limey Three Colors: Blue The Eagle Huntress Moonlight Beasts of No Nation 2001: A Space Odyssey *** Produced in collaboration with PBS Digital Studios: http://youtube.com/pbsdigitalstudios The Latest from PBS Digital Studios: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list... *** Want to find Crash Course elsewhere on the internet?
