Ask This Old House painter Mauro Henrique travels to Sacramento to show a homeowner the safe way to strip paint. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 12 hours Cost: $100 Skill Level: Beginner Tools List for Stripping Paint from Woodwork: Utility knife Plastic putty knife Shopping List: Drop cloth Lead test kit Zero VOC paint stripper Laminated paper Mask Gloves Cheap throwaway brush Scrub pad Steps: 1. Before doing any work, test the surface being stripped with a lead test kit. Follow the instructions that come with the packaging to confirm that there is no lead present. 2. Starting from the top of the surface being stripped, apply a thick layer of the paint stripper using the paint brush. 3. Cover each section with laminated paper to accelerate the curing time of the paint stripper. Cut off any excess paper with the utility knife. Allow each section to slightly overlap with previous sections to ensure full coverage. 4. Wait for the laminated paper to turn brown. It should take somewhere between 20-40 minutes. 5. Once the paper has turned brown, take the plastic putty knife and drag it underneath the laminated paper. Most of the paint should come off with it. 6. Gently scrape the plastic putty knife across the surface to get any extra paint left behind. 7. Soak the scrub pad in some warm water and scrub the surface to remove any leftover residue. Resources: Paint stripping is a project that can be detrimental to a person’s health. For that reason, Mauro strongly advises that homeowners take a number of steps to protect themselves from toxins. If there is a chance that any of the paint being stripped was applied before 1978, it needs to be tested for lead. Lead tests can be bought at most paint supply stores and home centers. Mauro used the LeadCheck Swabs test kit, manufactured by 3M (https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/). When choosing a paint stripper, check the label closely and choose one that reads “Zero VOC.” “Low VOC” paint strippers can be misleading, since there are few regulations determining the concentration of VOCs that can be considered “low”. Mauro used Smart Strip Advanced Paint Remover and laminated paper, both manufactured by Dumond (https://www.dumondchemicals.com/). The other materials required for paint stripping, including the plastic putty knife, drop cloths, disposable paint brush, mask and gloves, can all be found at home centers and paint supply stores. Expert assistance with this segment was provided by Mauro’s Painting (http://www.maurospainting.com/). Ask This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey helps a special homeowner hook up her refrigerator with an ice maker. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 2-3 hours Cost: $30 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Connecting an Ice Maker: Drill [https://amzn.to/2mSflaY] Feeler bit [https://amzn.to/2m2QEZg] Pipe cutter [https://amzn.to/2m2Sycm] Bucket [https://amzn.to/2nxt07O] Wrench [https://amzn.to/2n0kFJj] Shopping List: 1/4 inch copper tubing [https://amzn.to/2mYRAxW] Copper T fitting [https://amzn.to/2n0ODNl] Multi-turn shut off valve [https://amzn.to/2npTub8] with a compression connection [https://amzn.to/2lk9laA] Abrasive cloth [https://amzn.to/2m27305] Pipe cleaner [https://amzn.to/2mSs6T8] Solder [https://amzn.to/2nyU9r7] Flux [https://amzn.to/2lrdIAU] Flux brush [https://amzn.to/2nxnDFF] Steps: 1. Shut the water off to the house. 2. Locate the nearest cold water line and determine its location compared to the location of the fridge. 3. With that in mind, pull out the fridge and drill down with a feeler bit as close to the cold water line as possible. 4. Use the feeler bit to determine the best location to drill for the water line. Drill the hole. 5. Carefully uncoil the copper tubing and run it through the hole and close to the water line. 6. Determine where the water line will be cut. Clean that area with the abrasive cloth and cut it with a pipe cutter. Have a bucket ready to catch any water that comes out. 7. Once it’s dry, apply flux to the outside of the T and the inside of the pipe and the multi turn shut off valve. 8. Fit the pipe, the T, and the shutoff valve together and solder it. 9. Connect the _” copper tubing to the other side of the shutoff valve with the compression connection. 10. Go back to the fridge and uncoil the rest of the copper tubing. Leave extra slack high on the fridge so that it can still be easily moved in and out. 11. Find the opening in the back of the fridge to receive the copper tubing and screw it into place. 12. Put the fridge back in the opening and turn the water back on. Resources: While there are plenty of homeowner friendly kits [https://amzn.to/2mTU4ha] available for ice maker hookups, Richard suggests doing a little extra work to ensure a secure connection that will last for a long time. Richard replaced the plastic tubing for copper tubing, and instead of using a saddle valve, he connected it to the cold water line using a compression connection with a multi turn valve, which he soldered into the cold water pipe using a T fitting. All of these materials are available at home centers and plumbing supply houses. Valerie Gordon is the owner and operator of Valerie Confections, a Los Angeles bakery that specializes in resurrecting dessert recipes lost to time. Her interest first piqued after she recreated a popular coffee crunch cake from California’s iconic Blum’s Bakery. Since then, she’s taken her detective skills to the max, searching the menu vault at the Los Angeles library and reaching out to residents to find and bring back cakes of dessert past. So far, she’s successfully recreated a whole array of forgotten desserts, including the banana shortcake from Chasen’s and the grapefruit cake from Brown Derby. As a result, the squid s most extraordinary adaptations are those that have evolved to help them thwart these predators. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won t find in a typical Madrid tourism brochure, Madrid itinerary or Madrid city tour. 10 Things to do in Madrid, Spain Travel Guide Video Transcript: Greetings from Madrid, Spain. Hello hello. And this is a city we visited 2.5 years ago in the summer. We re back with my parents this time and we re going to be here for just a few days making a little travel guide and we hope you guys will join along. This one is going to be a little bit different because last time we were in Madrid we ran around like crazy. We re going to take it easy focus on the highlights. Focus on food. Delicious Spanish food. We hope you guys will enjoy our little tour of Madrid. The armoury turned out to be a real highlight with weapons and armour dating back from the 16th and 17th centuries. We caught a glimpse at the Almudena Cathedral and continued towards the Sabatini Gardens, which are located directly behind the palace. After lunch, we visited the Temple of Debod. This is ancient Egyptian temple that was given to Spain as a sign of gratitude for their help in saving the Abu Simbel temples. It dates back to the 2nd century BC and it’s one of the few works of ancient Egyptian architecture that can be seen outside of Egypt. Plaza Mayor is the main square in Madrid. It is lined with shops and cafes under its porticoes. It was just a skip over to one of the most popular food markets with visitors. Buen Retiro is a large park located at the edge of the city centre. It belonged to the Spanish Monarchy until the late 19th century, when it became a public park, and it’s home to various gardens, sculptures, monuments and small palaces One of the most iconic buildings found within the park is the Crystal Palace, made of glass and iron, which is used for art exhibits throughout the year. This cafe will make you feel like you’ve been transported back to the late nineteenth century. The walls are covered in mirrors and wood panelling, the tables are of white marble, the chairs and banquettes are deep green in colour. Last but not least, we finished off our visit with an evening stroll through Madrid, and that pretty much wraps our trip! The city clearly has much more to offer than we were able to cover in just 3 days, but we hope this Madrid travel guide gave you a few ideas of what you can do with a short break in the city. Wishing you happy travels and we’ll see you in the next video as we continue our travels through Spain! This is part of our Travel in Spain video series showcasing Spanish food, Spanish culture and Spanish cuisine. New community is here: https://www.patreon.com/fearlessandfar Big News! It s time to break open a new chapter. Kick the Grind is the past, Fearless and Far is the future. Here s why. My story was never one of kicking the grind. I didn t have a dramatic "I Quit" moment, and then left the 9 to 5, I didn t make content about helping people how to do this either. My content was always about the strange places and events in our world. It was about challenging myself (and all of you) with the wilder experiences our planet has to offer. It was about fighting fears and becoming the best version of yourself. That was my style of travel, that idea is what we built our community around. After 7 years it feels like a fresh beginning. Mike Corey of Kick the Grind, is now Fearlessandfar. I thought i would make a travel vlog in my own style to let you know. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ✧ Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/fearlessandfar ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This was filmed in the Lumiang burial caves in Sagada, Philippines. ✯ Experiences over Possessions ✯ -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before Nate turns 30 (which is March 20, 2019)! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)
