Running new electrical work usually requires a building permit. Consult with your local building department for more information. 2. Electrical boxes should be mounted 18” to center off the floor for outlets. Secure the nails in the boxes directly to the studs. 3. Code requires that from any point on the wall, an outlet should be within 6 feet. This is the minimum requirement. 4. Drill a hole in the center of every stud for running wire. 5. Unroll the 14 gauge cable to flatten it, then feed it through the holes in the studs. Run enough wire to reach each box and have some extra slack for working. 6. Attach the cable within 6” of the box using a cable staple. 7. Strip 8” of sheathing off the wire and feed it into the box. 8. In boxes with multiple conductors, splice the bare ground wires together and cap with a green wire nut, leaving one bare wire exposed. 9. Join us for an epic Canada Road Trip in this vlog as we highlight our journey driving from the Ontario to British Columbia as a family traveling with a dog. As one of our last major trips of 2018 it was an incredible opportunity to travel with Audrey s family and Togo the German Shepherd across Canada. Basically we all piled into a van and drove roughly 9 to 12 hours per day over 4 days to arrive in Alberta before spending a couple of nights with a family friend before making the brief crossing over to British Columbia. He is ready for his road trip. Ready to see all of Canada. He looks so happy. Well, good morning good morning. Good morning guys. We are kicking off this road trip. It is happening. It is happening. The plan. I feel like we haven t really explained it. We came up with the idea to do this last minute road trip with my family. With my parents with the dog. We re going to be driving from Ontario to BC. Yeah, British Columbia for those who don t know. Haha. British Columbia. Sam s home province. I haven t been there in over 10 years I m so excited to go back. It is going to be fun. I ve never been there before. It is going to be 4 days of driving to get there. We re going to show you guys the road trip and then once we get to BC we re going to be doing lots of hiking, visiting lakes, mountains, nature. It is going to be a good time and then on the way back we re planning to travel via the US if we can get across the boarder with this dog. We want to hit the road. We ve got three provinces in one day. It is very exciting. Want to name them all? We re leaving Ontario. We re going to Manitoba and then we re finishing off in Saskatchewan. We ve got a lot of driving. We are getting close to Regina. We like blasted through Manitoba. It took us two and half days to get through Ontario and just a few hours to get through Manitoba. Flat roads the whole way and yeah the scenery didn t really change. Like we started off with a little bit of forest as we crossed through Ontario into Manitoba and then it became flat like a pancake and it was mostly like farmland so it was a completely different change of scenery. We are going to be continuing the road trip out to BC (British Columbia) so like yesterday we did a little bit of sightseeing around Alberta but now we re going to finish off strong so we have about three hours left to drive over across the Rockies. I think we can say welcome to home sweet home. Where are we? Welcome to my home province of British Columbia guys. This is my first time in Invermere. It looks like a beautiful town and we re going to show you the house that we re staying in. This is going to be our little base as we explore BC and Alberta. The Rockies. Christian Louboutin is the mastermind behind these iconic red-bottomed shoes. It s safe to say his footwear has stepped into the mainstream. Celebrities all over the world wear them. "You know the ones with the high heels and the red bottoms?" ♪ These expensive, these is red bottoms ♪ ♪ These is bloody shoes ♪ Narrator: Louboutin even had the red bottoms trademarked. The signature Louboutin pumps, start at $695. The most expensive pair, nearly $6,000. So how did this craze start? Christian Louboutin had the idea for red soles in 1993. An employee was painting her nails red. Louboutin snagged the bottle and painted the soles of a prototype shoe. Just like that, the red soles were born. So, what makes these shoes worth the cost? In 2013, when the New York Times asked Louboutin, why his shoes are so expensive, he blamed production costs. Louboutin said, "It s expensive to make shoes in Europe." From 2008 to 2013, he said his company s production costs had doubled as the euro strengthened against the dollar, and competition increased for quality materials from factories in Asia. David Mesquita, the co-owner of Leather Spa, says craftsmanship also plays a part in the shoes high price tag. His company works directly with Louboutin to repair its shoes, repainting and replacing the red soles. David Mesquita: I mean there s a lot of things that go into the design of a shoe, and the making of a shoe. Most importantly, I think is, who s designing it, who s manufacturing it, and also what materials they re using to make the shoes. Whether you re talking about feathers, rhinestones, or exotic materials, there s so much attention to detail that they put into their manufacturing and designing of their shoes. Narrator: For instance, these $3,595 Louboutins are embellished with Swarovski Crystals. And these raccoon fur boots cost $1,995. When it all comes down to it, people are paying for the status symbol. Producer Spencer Alben bought a pair of Louboutins for her wedding. Spencer Alben: It makes me sound so stuck up, but I love the red soles because it s such like a fashion icon symbol. There s something about them that when you see them in a picture, you instantly know what those are. So it s like a status symbol I guess, which makes me sound terrible. They were over $1,000, which when I say that now, is insane for one pair of shoes that you re probably never gonna wear again. It s like something that everyone knows, so the second you see the red bottoms, it s like, I know what those are, I know what those cost. And it s so superficial that we care about that, but it really is something that is universal. You see that and you instantly know what those are, and it s something special. So I think, something as silly as the color of the sole on the shoe, makes them so special, because it s universally identifiable. Narrator: Would you drop $1,000 for red-bottomed shoes?

Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva and host Kevin O’Connor build a wall shelf for an entryway using stock poplar from a home center. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 4 hours Cost: $100 and up Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Building an Entry Shelf: Miter saw Speed square Table saw Router Rabbeting bit Roundover bit Chisel Jigsaw Drill/driver Shopping List: 1x10 poplar 1x4 poplar _” birch plywood Coat hooks Wood glue Trim head screws 1” nails Steps: 1. Mark desired lengths for the poplar and cut on a miter saw. 2. Rip desired widths on the table saw. 3. Rip the plywood to size on the table saw. 4. Use a router with a rabbeting bit to cut rabbets on the pieces for the sides and the top for the plywood. 5. Square off the rounded corner from the router with a chisel. 6. To set the radius on the bottom of the sides, trace a round object like a plastic bucket or paint can and then cut the radius with a jigsaw. 7. Use the roundover bit in the router to smooth the leading edges. 8. For the top edge, drop the roundover bit lower to create a shadow line. 9. Predrill holes for the dividers in the top and bottom. 10. Glue each joint using wood glue, then screw the pieces together using trim head screws. 11. Mark the location of the dividers on the back. Add glue, then secure the back with 1” nails. 12. Sand the piece. 13. Prime all surfaces. 14. Fill the screw holes with wood filler. 15. Apply a top coat of paint in desired color. Resources: Tom built the shelf out of 1x4 and 1x10 poplar plus _" plywood. He used trim head screws and wood glue to secure everything, then finally attached coat hooks. All items used for this project can be found in a home center. In this dramatic makeover, a fresh coat of paint gives a dated house with great bones new life. See how designer Olivia Botrie of Dart Studio used a modern color palette to bring the existing custom millwork, cabinets and fireplace into the 21st century.
