Ask This Old House painter Mauro Henrique teaches apprentice Mary McGuire-Smith how to strip wallpaper without using any chemicals SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 3-4 hours Cost: $50 Skill Level: Beginner Tools List for Stripping Wallpaper: Utility knife Putty knife Empty spray bottle Wallpaper scoring tool Flathead screwdriver Shopping List: Plastic drop cloths Painter’s tape Vinegar Ladder Sponge Steps: 1. This job requires working with a lot of water. To keep the mess down, start by protecting the floor with drop cloths. Use painter’s tape to secure the drop cloth directly to the wall. 2. Cover up any outlets on the wall with painter’s tape. Do not remove the cover as those can help protect the outlets from water. 3. Score the wallpaper around the outlet with the utility knife. A putty knife can help make the score marks straight. Those pieces of wallpaper will be removed last. 4. Start removing as much of the dry wallpaper as possible. Identify a seam in the wallpaper, slide the putty knife underneath it, and start peeling it off. Work slowly and as parallel to the wall as possible to get the most off in the dry passes. 5. Score whatever wallpaper remains on the wall with the wallpaper scoring tool to get underneath the wallpaper and closer to the paste holding it up. 6. In the spray bottle, mix hot water and vinegar together in a 50/50 proportion. Spray the mixture on the wallpaper. 7. Let the mixture sit on the wall for 5-10 minutes. It should deactivate the wallpaper paste so it can be scraped off with the putty knife. 8. Clean off the wall and any remaining wallpaper paste with the hot water/vinegar mixture and a sponge. 9. Once you’re done working with water, remove the painter’s tape around the outlets and remove the outlet covers with the screwdriver. 10. Scrape off the rest of the wallpaper around each outlet with the putty knife. 11. Put the cover plate back on the outlet. Resources: To remove wallpaper without using any chemicals, Mauro recommends using hot water and vinegar, which can be purchased at any grocery store. The other materials Mauro used to remove the wallpaper, including the putty knives, utility knife, and the wallpaper scoring tool can all be found at home centers and painting supply stores. Cut strips of the 5/4” pine to length and width, based on the size of the cabinets. These will be the filler pieces. 2. Make rabbet cuts on the filler pieces so that the piece fits tightly on the top of the cabinet and over the door of the cabinet. 3. Once the cuts are all made, spray paint the filler pieces to match the color of the cabinets in case they show through. 4. Mount the filler pieces to the cabinets using super glue to hold it in place and wood glue to more permanently bond it to the cabinet. 5. From the sides of the cabinet, nail the filler pieces in the place. For the front filler piece, drill from underneath the inside of the cabinet, and then secure that piece with wood screws. 6. Hold up the crown molding on the sides of the cabinet. Be sure they’re tight against the wall. Use a pencil to mark from the inside the correct measurement to cut the crown molding. Draw an arrow on the inside to help determine which angle the miter cut should go. 7. Hold the crown molding upside down and backwards so that it presses up safely against the fence of the miter saw. To keep it from slipping, you can use some of the clear polyurethane glue and a couple small pieces of wood to glue on the base of the saw to act as stops. 8. Turn the miter saw to 45 degrees based on the direction of the mark drawn on the crown molding during measuring. Cut the piece. 9. To make the sister cut on the opposite piece of crown molding, turn the saw to the opposite 45 degree angle and cut it again. 10. Nail the two pieces together using the brad nailer and then hold the crown molding back up to the cabinet to get the next measurement. Measure and mark the front piece of crown molding. Be sure to also mark the direction of the angle for the crown molding like before. 11. Make the miter cut for the front piece of crown molding. Then, make the sister cut for the following side like before. 12. Mount the crown molding to the cabinet using the brad nailer. Repeat this process with the rest of the cabinets with outside corners. 13. For any cabinets with an inside corner, cut the miters with the opposite 45 degree angle so that the miter angles on the crown molding cuts into itself. 14. Fill in all the nail holes with wood putty. 15. Caulk around the crown molding where it meets the ceiling to give it a finished look. Resources: The homeowner had already purchased shaker-style cabinets that came with the crown molding. When it comes to getting around the city, subways and trains are your best bet. We spent our first few days buying one-way tickets and day passes, which in retrospect was a bit of a headache. The easiest thing to do is to get a prepaid card where you can load money as needed. Osaka’s version of this card is called Icoca, but you can also use Pasmo and Suica in the city.
