Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva and host Kevin O’Connor build a modern storage bench out of a single sheet of MDF SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 3-4 hours Cost: $40 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Building a Storage Bench: Hearing protection Track saw Router Framing square Drill driver Palm sander Safety glasses Miter saw Brad nailer Shopping List: Sheet of MDF Cushion for bench Baskets for bench Sandpaper Mask Wood glue Wood screws Steps: 1. Start by cutting the MDF sheet into a workable size with a track saw. 2. Before cutting the sheet in half for the top and bottom pieces of the bench, determine where the slots for the cubbies are going to go and mark them with a pencil and a straight edge. Use the baskets to help determine the size of the cubbies. 3. Use a router to make a dado cut along the marked lines. 4. Cut the MDF and half across the dado cut lines for the top and bottom pieces of the bench using the track saw. 5. Cut a few inches off the bottom piece of the bench. The top will have a slight overhang. 6. Cut the edges off each end of the dado cuts for the bottom piece so that they become rabbet cuts. 7. Pre-drill holes in the dados so that it’s easier to fasten everything at the end. 8. Using more of the MDF, cut the pieces for the sides, divider, and back of the bench to desired length and width. The track saw can be used for this, but a table saw is a little easier if you have one. 9. Before assembling the pieces, give everything a good sanding. 10. Assemble the pieces of the bench together with wood glue and wood screws. The dividers should go in the dado cuts and the sides and back should go in the rabbet cuts. Do one piece at a time, since the MDF will suck up the glue pretty quickly. 11. Measure and cut the pieces of the toe kick for the bench to rest on. Use a miter saw to miter the angles to assemble the box. 12. Cut filler pieces to go behind each piece of the toe kick. Connect those using wood glue and the brad nailer. 13. Assemble the toe kick with wood glue and brad nails. 14. Glue and nail another piece of MDF in the center of the toe kick for extra support for the bench. 15. Rest the bench on toe kick with more wood glue and brad nails. Resources: Tom likes MDF because it’s durable and it’s a fairly inexpensive material to work with. He pointed out that the big downside to MDF is that it doesn’t do well if it gets wet and it is also extremely heavy and will oftentimes require two people to work with it. It can be found at home centers. The top cushion is the Montlake Bench Cushion, manufactured by Classic Accessories (https://classicaccessories.com/). The baskets that Tom selected are the Rattique Storage Totes in Taupe, manufactured by Whitmor (https://whitmor.com/). Join us on our first day in Tokyo as we share some of our first impressions of the city! After arriving in Tokyo, we met up with our friend Rob from "Stop Having a Boring Life" (https://www.youtube.com/user/bloggeries) and we set out to explore the city together. Rob had been to Tokyo before, so we let him lead the way with the sightseeing. After stopping for lunch at Coco Curry House (a classic Japanese food experience!), we continued on to Harajuku. Here we walked along Takeshita Street and browsed the quirky shops along the way. From there we continued to Shibuya to see the Shibuya Crossing, which is just as busy as you might expect. There was also a detour to Big Camera, to browse the latest gear. We were feeling pretty wiped from the busyness of it all, so after that, we walked over to Yoyogi Park where we enjoyed some ice creams and lounged on the grass. From there it was just a short walk over to the Meiji Shrine, so we also visited that. And that pretty much sums up our first day in Tokyo! We visited some very busy sights and we also found some peace and quiet in the middle of the chaos. It is our first day here in Tokyo. Yes. The gang. We re going to go out and have some lunch because it is a pretty late start actually. We re going to wander around and basically check out what our first impressions are of Tokyo, Japan. And we ve got our good buddy Rob from Stop Having A Boring Life to join us. This is going to be fun. So the mission will include food. We re going to visit maybe some of the busiest areas in Tokyo, maybe some temples and show you our neighborhood as well. Alright guys so a little change of plans. We were on the train on our way to Shibuya and then we realized we were at Harajuku so that seems like a good first introduction to Tokyo. We decided to get off and we are right in front of Takishita Street. I think it is going to be all about the crazy fashion so let s go see it. Okay I think we have made it maybe like half way down the street here in Harajuku. Impressions. What are you thinking so far? The population density is off the charts. Yeah. We end up walking down a crazy busy street. It is like a mass of tourists. So basically this is like the stark contrast between where we were earlier in the day. It was pure modernity pure madness in terms of crowds and just like this is a nice green escape right in the heart of Tokyo. So what do you think about it? I kind of I totally agree with what you re saying. Tokyo is nice because you ve got the craziness of the Shibuya scramble and then less than a kilometer and a half away you ve got the peacefulness of Yoyogi Park. Exactly. It is a beautiful Saturday and well it is spring but it feels like summer. Obviously it feels like half of Tokyo is here right now. It is just relaxing and it is nice. In this travel vlog we go from Osaka to Tokyo by bus. After researching our options (bullet trains, slower trains, planes?) we found that the cheapest option was to take the bus. We booked tickets from Osaka to Tokyo with Willer Express. They had multiple departures per day, with the option to take either a day bus or an overnight bus. We opted for the day bus and it was an 8+ hour bus journey. The tickets were ¥5400 per person and it was a comfortable enough ride. The seats were slender, but there were charging outlets, free WiFi, and these funny little head covers that you could lower for privacy. The bus also made frequent stops so that passengers could stretch their legs, buy food, and use the restrooms. So overall, it was a pretty good trip! We got to enjoy some of the scenery from Osaka to Tokyo, and it was a budget-friendly way to travel! Today the travels in Japan continue. We re leaving Osaka behind. So we re saying goodbye apartment. You ve been great. Yes, it has been a great apartment. And we are going to be traveling to Tokyo by bus. Yes. So we are going to show you the budget friendly option because the bullet train was not cheap. And the other trains were not cheap. Yeah and we booked it last minute yes so the bus was probably a third of the price of the train. Yes. Literally. It really was. Literally. So yeah let s go. We ve got a metro to catch and then a bus. We ll show you the journey. Now the fun part going down with all of our luggage. When I said we were here bright and early I was not kidding. What train are we catching? The 533. It is the first metro of the day and we are here waiting for it. I think we re the only people around here. Wow. A moment of zen in a Japanese metro station. Update. We are now transferring to the red line to Midosuji. Let s continue. We made it to the bus terminal. What is this right here? So apparently these are sample seats. Sample seats. The ones on the bus should be just like that. So let s test them out. Alright try them out. And there is the little something something behind your head. If you want privacy. Privacy. From you? Hahaha. No from sunlight. Anyways these are comfortable. I have a feeling I m going to be catching up on some sleep because we woke up at like what four something this morning. Yeah. It was early. Tired. So I hiked over to the 7-11 and grabbed us a little breakfast. Breakfast. Want to show us what I got? We have bananas. Bananas. We have a chicken avocado sandwich to share. This is bread. Japanese style I think it is sweet bread. And we get one little each. Like pineapple cake? Hello time for an update. We made it to our first stop. Yeah. We ve been driving for an hour. Now we get a 20 minute break. The stuffed pancake? I think I m like I ve always really liked red bean paste but I think I m growing even more fonder of it now that we re in Japan. It is 12:30 this is what our 3rd stop. Yes. Wow. This trip has gone really fast. And it has been a lot more scenic than I expected. Yeah. Like I m not sure why I didn t expect it to be that scenic. Mountains. It has been gorgeous. Forest going through these quaint little towns. We ve also gone through cities. Yeah. It has been an incredible journey. We ve had nice weather. And these stops have been really cool. Like these I don t know what you would call them. These rest stops. Yes. Are massive. And there is just so many things you can eat and snack on. And each time we were given like 20 or 30 minutes yes so I think we re going to grab another little snack.
