Just a quick little update about the videos that are coming out on our channel because right now we have Japan and we have India. So Japan was our summer trip. Japan we did from late May until late July. We came back home to Canada and we still had Europe and Peru content to get through. And then I did an India trip with David in November. Yes. And I ended up filming way more episodes than I had even anticipated. Yeah. So that is why we ve got the India series running on Thursdays and Fridays and then the Japan series on Saturday and Sundays. Let s also talk about our winter getaway. We re going to a cabin again. We did that last year and it was just so much fun. I mean it is great family time. With really quality time together. Yeah. And the dog is going to love it. Togo. The dog always comes on our little adventures around Canada. I think we re probably going to film a bit while we are at the cottage. We are staying in the Kawartha Lakes. I hope there is snow up there because it has been a very green Christmas in the city. The big announcement guys is we have our first big trip of 2019 planned. It is going to be almost 3 months. 3 months and you know what? It is one of those countries on the map behind us.We re spending three months in one country. Want to venture a guess? Um we are going to Argentina! Oh my gosh a country we both love. Like we ve been so excited thinking about going back. And my gosh we re going to explore so many different areas of Argentina. We ve only seen a little bit of the country. We re going to explore a whole lot more Like we ve only really spent time in Buenos Aires. And I ve shown you a little bit around the province of Cordoba. And Salta we did go to the north. There is so much left to see and we just booked our flights like maybe two days ago. So we re feeling pretty pumped. And I think like after having a year of go go go. Like we were in Europe. Go go go. Then we were in Peru. And then we did then we went to Antigua and then we did a trip here. And then I was in India. And it is just yeah we re kind of craving some slower travels so I think we re going to thoroughly explore one country for a while and it is something that we re really excited about. Dragon fish, or Asian arowana, are some of the most expensive pet fish in the world. It often sells for tens of thousands of dollars, and one was rumored to have sold for $300,000 in 2009. The fish is highly coveted for the red and gold colors, and new color variations that it has been bred for. Emily Voigt, author of The Dragon Behind The Glass, talks about the peculiarities of the arowana trade. -------------------------------------------------- #DragonFish #BusinessInsider #SoExpensive Following is a transcript of the video: Narrator: What would you rather have, a new car, or this fish? Turns out they cost around the same. A single dragon fish can go for tens of thousands of dollars. So, what s so special about it? Well, it might not look it, but this endangered fish is so coveted, people have actually gone to prison over it.The dragon fish gets its nickname for how it resembles a dragon in flight as it swims. However, its real name is the Asian arowana. It s a freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia, and it has taken the aquarium market by storm. Today, these fish are so prized that some have their own motorcades, and breeders protect their stock with layers of concrete walls, complete with guard dogs and watchmen. There s even a market for cosmetic surgery to help subpar fish who need eye lifts or chin tucks. And that may sound like overkill, but it s really not. Emily Voigt: It s a very valuable commodity, and that had driven a tremendous amount of crime around the areas where it s bred. Narrator: That s Emily Voigt, who explores this world for her book, "The Dragon Behind the Glass." We re talking murder and midnight fish-napping. This wasn t always the case, however.Up until the second half of the 20th century, these fish weren t flaunted. They were fileted and eaten by locals. Then, in 1967, an aquarium trader traveling through northern Malaysia saw a dead arowana at a food market and found it so attractive that he sought one out to keep as a pet. By the 1980s, arowanas had turned up in Taiwan, and eventually people all over Asia wanted one. In particular, the red and gold varieties of arowana came to symbolize luck and wealth in several Asian cultures. Voigt: All that has led to a whole mythology about the fish. It s supposed to bring good luck and prosperity, even to jump out of its tank to save its owner. Narrator: Nowadays, breeding for new color combinations is all the rage. Like this fish, called the chili red, which you can get for around $1,400 each. Or the emerald violet fusion super red, which goes for about $12,000 each. But no fish is more rare and valuable than the albino. In 2009, one of these supposedly set a record, selling for $300,000 to an anonymous high ranking official in the Chinese government. In fact, most people who buy dragon fish are middle-class Chinese men, who ll collect the fish as a status symbol. Voigt: So keeping this fish is very much a macho hobby. There s not a lot of women that do it. And it s almost like collecting cars or something like that. Narrator: So in the mid-90s, when dragon fish were successfully bred in captivity on certified farms, it was a big deal, because they were becoming rare in the wild due to overfishing and harvesting for the pet trade. Since then, more demand has led to breeding operations all over Southeast Asia. And while it s perfectly legal to buy a dragon fish in the area, it may not be in other non-Asian countries. In the US, for example, you can only find the Asian arowana on the black market. And in fact, you can t bring it into the country legally, because it s banned by the US Endangered Species Act. People have actually gone to prison for trafficking this fish. And in this video we re going to be checking out attractions in Pune and having lunch in Pune. A combination of travel and street food. We re going to have sugarcane juice out here. We have been having breakfast which has been spicy and Pune is known for its spicy food. Now we re going to go back to cool ourselves down and have some sugarcane juice. First attraction. What are we visiting in Pune? This is basically a fort. It is called Shaniwar Wada. Historical palace. Baji Rao Palace it is established in 17th century. Baji Rao first, second, third. There is the original palace. The founding person. This is used to be a large reservoir since at the peak of the Pershwa period about a 1000 people lived in the Shaniwar Wada. This large reservoir would have been a necessity. This complex is even bigger than I expected. And I think the main thing for us to do is to go climb along the top part of the walls which look pretty awesome and I think we ll have some really good views from there. On our way to the next attraction we found a Palm Reader on the street. Basically you get your palm read and you just pay whatever you think is a fair price. Most of the places where you see a Banyan tree they feel it sacred. They feel it like there is some supernatural power and they basically light up candles or the incense sticks. Masala chai which you are having. First he put in some milk. And he added some tea leaves in it. And when it comes to a boil he put his homemade ingredients which is the masala. Which is basically ground cinnamon, ground cloves and then he added some cardamon to his morten pestle and he put that spice in with the leaves on. We are the Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati temple. It is one of the oldest temples out here. It is about 125 years old and this is the most famous temple and it is crazy during Diwali festival which is a 10 day long festival that happens here. Vada Pav is an Indianized Burger. It has a potato patty. The flat potato patty with all of the ground spices which is mixed with potatoes, green chillies and a little bit of more Indian spices. It is ground and deep-fried and it has a mint chutney coating on the bun itself. Around the Pav. And so along with some raw onions and some fritters and green chillies. And green chillies? Sounds delicious. Look at that man. Green chillies itself sometimes you see fried with salt. It has salty and spicy taste to it. And it has an aftertaste which is really good. Mastani is basically a milkshake. Yeah. And they add a scoop of ice. It is amazing for the hot winter or hot summers out here. It really cools you down. And we need that. It is so hot. They added the milkshake. It is a very thick creamy milkshake. The scoop of ice cream, some nuts, almonds, cashews and pistachios.
