Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva travels to Colorado to help a couple build a DIY swing set for their young son. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 4-5 hours Cost: $1000 and up Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Building a Swing Set: Measuring tape Speed square Drill driver Hammer Flathead screwdriver Wrench set Shopping List: DIY Play Set kit Play set kit accessories Lumber for swing set frame 4” screws Steps: 1. Measure and mark the locations of the holes for all the swing set accessories across the top beam of swing set. 2. Drill holes all the way through the beam on the marks. It’s important to keep the holes straight, so use a speed square to guide the drill bit. 3. Flip the beam over and insert the T-nuts that come with the play set kit with a hammer. 4. Insert the washers over the brackets for the swings and thread those through the holes into the T-nuts. These also come with the kit. Eventually, you won’t be able to hand tighten anymore, but you can use a screwdriver in the hole of the bracket as leverage to get it the rest of the way down. Be sure to keep the orientation of the hole perpendicular to the beam. 5. Drill the washers into the beam using the drill driver and the provided screws. 6. Assemble the A-frames of the playset using 4x4 lumber. Secure the frame together with 4” screws. 7. Once the frames are assembled, screw the provided brackets to the tops of the A-frames to hold the top beam. 8. Measure, cut, and assemble a platform for the slide. Leave gaps between the boards to allow for rainwater to slide through. 9. Screw the slide platform into two of the A-frames using the four inch screws. 10. Attach the A-frames to the top beam using carriage bolts and nuts that come with the kit. 11. Once the frame is completely assembled, carefully tilt it right-side-up into position. 12. Screw some additional 2x4s to the A-frame on the inside of the slide platform to act as railings. 13. Screw the slide to the platform. To keep the slide from pushing forward, you can add some additional stakes into the ground underneath the bottom of the slide and secure the slide to those stakes. 14. Screw more 2x4s to the A-frame to make a ladder for the platform, or screw them closer together and attach rock climbing grabs in select locations. Come join us for a traditional Japanese apartment tour in Tokyo, Japan as we showcase our Shinjuku airbnb that we stayed at for an entire month. For the month of June we rented this spacious traditional Japanese apartment in Tokyo which was located on the outskirts of Shinjuku closest to ShinOkubo line (15-20 minutes walking distance) in a residential area. The nieghborhood was especially quiet down back-streets and alleys and we were nearby a grocery store and a stream where we could go walking and jogging in the mornings and evenings. In terms of our apartment in Tokyo, Japan what we liked best was first the size and second the traditional aspects of it. For Tokyo it is a big apartment offering plenty of room for the two of us and even more for guests. We loved how sections of the apartment were divided by curtains and sliding doors meaning we could section the apartment off into four different areas. With tatami mats and a traditional dining table we ate most of our meals sitting down and we also had a couple of nice office spaces where we could work on our computers. We have been living in this apartment in Tokyo for about a month now. We have finally settled in and tidied up today. So it seemed like a good time to finally show you around. So yeah we re just going to start right now because we re right by the main entrance. We are. So basically we ve got a door here. Yes. To Sam s right. This is our main entrance right here. It is. It opens up into this hallway where you can take off your shoes. You can hang up your jacket. It is the rainy season so lots of umbrellas. The most important thing. They left us two and we were out stranded one day and we picked up one ourselves. So we actually have three and we ve been using them a lot. Yeah so that is kind of like the little entrance way. We ve got some cool little curtains as a division from the other room. But we re going to enter through here actually to take you into the main part of the apartment. So follow me this way. And I will say right off the bat this is the largest Japanese apartment we were able to find online. Yeah. A lot of them were just like studios. So basically one room where you had your bedroom and your kitchen and your living area and we were like no we re going to be here a while so we need more space. And we got so lucky. We were able to find an apartment with 4 different areas. Yes. Basically we are back where we began. So that concludes our Japanese apartment tour. We hope you guys enjoyed having a look around. Now you know what to expect if you get really lucky with a large apartment. Yes. We are in a residential area kind of like in the outskirts of Shinjuku. Yes. It is not as touristy here. No. It definitely feels more local. It does. Rents are cheaper. So yeah. We re what? A fifteen or twenty minute walk from the metro? Yeah, I would say maybe 15 minutes from the closest station on foot. Right. Which isn t bad. Unless it is raining. ShinOkubo. Okubo. Okubo. That is how they say it when they announce it. Okubo. But yeah that is our apartment. We ve really enjoyed being here. Come join us for our life in Tokyo, Japan vlog where we highlight what it is like living in Japan as foreigners by showing you a typical non-travel day where we do things like go grocery shopping, do our laundry, work on video editing and grab a cheap inexpensive local meal. We start off the day by showing you guys our breakfast in our apartment in Tokyo which was basically just green tea, peanut butter, banana and bread. Afterwards we do a bit of work on our computers before heading out to do laundry. Lunch consisted of visiting an inexpensive ramen joint where Audrey ordered a bowl of ramen and I had mixed rice with a sweet and sour glaze and shrimp. And we are just sitting down here at our chabudai which is a traditional Japanese table. Low to the ground. We are having breakfast. Yes. And the plan basically is yeah just going to be a day in the life in Japan so we are going to go out maybe show you our neighborhood. Maybe have some ramen for lunch. We ve been talking about that. We re thinking of doing laundry today. We have to do laundry. It has been a while. Our clothes don t magically clean themselves. No. We are also maybe going to go for a little walk there is a little stream nearby our house. Yes. So it is just going to basically be a typical day here in Tokyo, Japan. And we re also going to show you just what we get up to when we re not really doing a sightseeing day here. Yes. But first breakfast. Laundry is done. Now it is time for lunch. Yes and so because I didn t have breakfast my appetite has been growing by the hour. I m so ready for it whatever it is we have. We are not sure what is open on a Sunday but I think we re going to try the ramen spot that is nearby. Yes there is one near the subway station that I ve been to a couple of times. And it is super cheap and the noodles are really tasty. We are heading back to our apartment now. Yep. I hope you guys enjoyed this day in the life vlog. Yeah. Getting to see what our daily routine in Tokyo has been like. Yeah. It has just been like we ve been living here in Tokyo for quite a while so it is just cool to show you like what a slice of our life is like here. Yeah. In this Indonesia travel vlog we visit Pianemo Raja Ampat. This beautiful part of Eastern Indonesia is very close to Papua, and famous the large schools of fish seen diving and snorkeling. Besides this, huge karst islands rise out of the turquoise ocean like teeth and form incredible lagoons. This makes the island hopping experience here in Raja Ampat some of the best in the world as well. A roof without a drip edge can draw water off the roof into the end grain of the sheathing through surface tension, rotting the sheathing, the fascia, and the structure underneath. 2. A metal drip edge will help protect the sheathing under the roof, but if it’s installed too closely to the fascia board, it can still cause water to be drawn into the fascia. 3. The best installation method is to leave a gap between the drip edge and the fascia board, about the width of a finger. The shingles should also overhang the drip edge 3⁄8 to _ of an inch. What comes to mind when trying this huge thali ( थाली) is just the sheer size of it! When it was being brought out to our table my jaw almost dropped. However, it is not just a publicity stunt as the ingredients and dishes you find on this Indian Thali are delicious and vary from savorty to spicy to sweet. The challenge of trying to finish this Bahubali Thali was just too much for David and I. We had to tap out after sampling a bit of everything with most of the Thali still on the plate.
