Homeowner and blogger Andrea Haraldsen of Harlow & Thistle shows us her quaint home design, which truly defines “luxe for less.” See how she brought her home’s original 1960s footprint into the present with contemporary flooring, a neutral palette and mid-century modern furniture. Andrea completed a number of DIY projects throughout the house. She added stucco to the fireplace surround, created a feature wall in the dining room and even made a kitchen vent hood out of an Ikea cabinet. The renovated kitchen’s dove grey Laura Ashley tile backsplash brings in tons of personality, as do the handmade details throughout. Andrea proves you can create a beautiful home on a budget with a bit of creativity and craftiness. Ask This Old House carpenter Nathan Gilbert upgrades a kitchen to have soft close cabinets SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 3-4 hours Cost: $1500 for the entire kitchen Skill Level: Beginner Tools List for Upgrading Soft Close Cabinets: Screwdriver Drill Self-centering drill bit Draw slides jig Shopping List: Soft close hinges Soft close drawer slides Drawer slides socket Wood screws Steps: 1. Using the screwdriver, unscrew the hinges holding the cabinet doors to the cabinet and remove the doors. Only do one door at a time so you don’t lose track of which door goes where. 2. Unscrew the hinges from the cabinet doors using the screwdriver. 3. Place the new hinges into the mortises from the old hinges. If the new screw holes don’t line up, you’ll need to drill new ones. 4. To drill new holes in the cabinet doors, take a combination square to line up the hinge with the bottom of the door to ensure it’s square. 5. Next, drill a small hole in the door using a self-centering drill bit. 6. Then, screw the new hinges into the new holes. 7. Reinstall the cabinet door onto the cabinet and repeat this process for every cabinet door in the kitchen. 8. For the drawer slides, start by removing the drawers and slides from the cabinet using the screwdriver. Do one cabinet at a time, and keep track of the order of the drawers being pulled from that one cabinet, as they can still vary in size. However, it will be easier to work in the cabinet with all the drawers removed. 9. Pull apart the new slides to work only with the section that will be mounted to the inside of the cabinet. 10. Mount the drawer slides jig into the inside of the cabinet. 11. Insert the back of the slides into the socket and rest the slides on the jig. Put the slides into position and screw the socket against the back of the cabinet. 12. Screw the front of the slides into the face frame of the cabinet. 13. Reconnect the slides and repeat this process for both sides of the drawer. 14. Switch the drawer slides jig so that it is sticking outside of the cabinet. Rest the drawer on the jig and extend the drawer slides until they are fully extended to the front edges of the drawer. 15. Screw the slides into the drawer. 16. Repeat this process for all the drawers in the kitchen. Resources: While there are a few low-cost options to upgrade to soft close kitchen cabinets, Nathan suggests changing out all hardware to soft close… Nathan installed TEC Soft-Close cabinet hinges, which are manufactured by Grass USA (https://www.grassusa.com/). He recommends identifying the brand currently installed in the cabinets and replacing the hardware with that same brand, which is what he did in this case. Usually, that will require less work to the cabinet doors to get the new hardware to fit. For the drawer slides, Nathan installed 22” soft-close, full extension, ball bearing, side mount drawer slides, which are manufactured by Everbilt and sold at home centers. The plastic cup Nathan mounted to the back of the cabinet was manufactured by Everbilt as well. To determine which types of slides to get, measure the cabinet front to back for the length, and get the same mounting type as the original slides, since they will be easier to install. Opt for full extension over 3/4 extension to gain full access of the drawer. The drawer slides jig Nathan used is manufactured by Kreg Tools (https://www.kregtool.com/). The jig makes the drawer slides installation significantly easier because they can hold everything in place. The rest of the tools Nathan used to install the soft close hinges and slides, including the drill driver, screwdriver, and self-centering drill bit, can all be found at home centers. Expert assistance with this segment was provided by Nathan Gilbert Carpentry. Looking for more step by step guidance on how to complete projects around the house? YETI coolers have become a status symbol in the United States. The expensive, high-tech coolers range between $200 and $1,300. The technology used to make the coolers, combined with a highly effective marketing campaign, has made YETI a popular lifestyle brand that also makes apparel, drinkware, and even pet products. ------------------------------------------------------ Following is a transcript of the video: Graham Flanagan: YETI is known for its expensive coolers that have become a status symbol in America. This is their most expensive, the 82-gallon Tundra 350, that retails for $1,300. Since the company was founded in 2006, YETI has become an iconic brand. And they make a lot more than just coolers. Drinkware, apparel, and even dog bowls. But the coolers are what they re best known for. Like the popular Tundra 35 that retails for $250. But you can get a comparably-sized cooler from legacy brands like Coleman and Igloo for around $40. Why are YETI coolers so expensive? There are two pretty simple answers: technology and marketing. The Austin, Texas-based company was founded by the Seiders brothers: two avid outdoorsmen who felt there weren t any coolers on the market that kept their catches, kills, and beverages cold enough for long enough. They teamed up with a factory in the Philippines to create a cooler that they described as indestructible, with superior ice retention. Their first cooler hit the market in 2006. If you were serious about keeping your catches, kills and "brewskies" as cold as possible, you needed a YETI. Fisherman: Whoop. Don t worry it s a YETI. Flanagan: So, how do they work? The cooler s shell is made of a common plastic called polyethylene with a process called rotomolding, which uses high temperature and low pressure to create one piece of hollow plastic. Rotomolding is also used to make kayaks. The shell is pressure injected with up to three inches of commercial-grade polyurethane foam. And that s what keeps your beers, I mean, that s what keeps your catches and kills cold for so long. The coolers feature a full-frame, freezer-quality gasket that seals around the entire lid to minimize air exchange. And I can tell you from experience, they work. But are they worth the high price tag? I asked on of those questions on my Facebook profile, and the responses were mixed. "Definitely." "They re heavy AF." They are heavy. "No." "There are cheaper brands that work just as well." There are some rotomolded YETI competitors like Orca, OtterBox and RTIC, that are slightly cheaper, but still comparably priced. None of them have been able to create the brand phenomenon that YETI has seen. In October of 2018, YETI went public when they filed an IPO on the New York Stock Exchange. And the company s market cap is now estimated at $1.5 billion. So, how are YETI coolers able to carry that high price tag? Marketing. Highly effective marketing. And their campaign to ramp up the population of YETI nation is just getting started. The company recently hired the former head of marketing for Calvin Klein to be its Chief Marketing Officer. And the company s effective use of the all-American, rugged, outdoor lifestyle keeps customers coming back for more. -------------------------------------------------- MORE SO EXPENSIVE CONTENT: Why Louboutin Shoes Are So Expensive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZPUK1GdoTY Why Bluefin Tuna Is So Expensive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=setJXT-K2CQ Why The New York Knicks Are So Expensive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKeBMWFUApg #YETI #Coolers #BusinessInsider -------------------------------------------------- Business Insider tells you all you need to know about business, finance, tech, retail, and more. Today we re giving you a Tokyo Capsule Hotel Tour! For our last night in Tokyo, we booked 2 pods in a super futuristic capsule hotel in the heart of Koreatown. This capsule hotel is called 9 Hours and it is part of a chain of capsule hotels found across Japan, so if you like the look of it, you can experience it across the country! Capsule hotels in Japan used to be male only, and today there are some that are female-only, however, we stayed at one that welcomes both men and women. The only thing to note about staying in a capsule hotel is that there are separate floors for men and women, so if you re a couple, you ll be split on different levels. Tokyo Capsule Hotel Address (Shinjuku North Location): 〒169-0073 Tōkyō-to, Shinjuku-ku, Hyakuninchō, 1 Chome−4, 百人町1 丁目4−15 ナインアワーズ北新宿ビル 3-8F Closest Station: Shin-Okubo * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GEAR WE USE Panasonic GH5: http://amzn.to/2yqTUyi Canon G7X ii: http://amzn.to/2yqtM6B Rode Video Micro: http://amzn.to/2wTguTM Joby Gorilla Pod: http://amzn.to/1PgoY5F SanDisk 16GB Extreme Pro: http://amzn.to/25KEErs * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SOCIAL MEDIA & TRAVEL BLOGS AUDREY: blog: http://thatbackpacker.com/ instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thatbackpacker/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thatbackpacker twitter: https://twitter.com/ThatBackpacker SAMUEL: blog: http://nomadicsamuel.com/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nomadicsamuel twitter: https://twitter.com/NomadicSamuel instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadicsamuel/ * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TOKYO CAPSULE HOTEL TOUR IN JAPAN | Male vs Female Experience Travel Food Video Transcript: One of our bucket list items in Japan was to spend a night in a capsule hotel. So before leaving Tokyo we booked a night at 9 hours. A futuristic capsule hotel that pretty much looks like a spaceship. This pod hotel is located by Shin-Okubo station right in the heart of Korea Town and in this video we re going to share the whole experience with you guys. We are just waiting for the elevator now. The reception is surprisingly on the 8th floor not the first. The check-in process was simple and straight forward. We were each given a card with a qr code which would act as our key for the duration of our stay. We checked out the views of our neighborhood and also learned that the capsules for men and women are on separate floors. This is the part where Sam and I have to go our separate ways. Different floors for men and women. So I m on the 6th floor and I m on the 4th. We ll each take our own camera and show you are own experience. Indeed. And we ll meet back here in a bit. I went up to the 6th floor to find my locker and store my belongings. All of the lockers have an overnight kit to make each guest stay at the capsule hotel a little more comfortable. A look inside the bag coming up soon. I also discovered that my suitcase was a little too plump for my locker so some pushing and prodding ensued. And inside I had this little bag already waiting for me. It looks like we have a towel, some slippers and PJs. It looks like we have slippers with the 9 hours logo. We have a towel. We ve got some pajamas to put on. This is going to be fun. Oh okay toothpaste. Toothbrush. That is our kit for spending the night at a capsule hotel. Let s actually go check out my capsule. Before going into the dorm with all of the capsules we have to take off our shoes and put on slippers. The Spaceship. Even though it was the middle of the afternoon I was ready to explore my pod. First up a little stretch test to see just how much space there is in one of these capsules. Stretch Test. Not bad. I definitely didn t feel claustrophobic in there so that is a good start. It is time for final thoughts on our first and only capsule hotel experience. Yeah. What did you think? How was your night? We were sleeping in different areas. I had a great sleep. I went to be about 11 pm woke up at five and I slept continuously. Overall I would recommend staying in a capsule hotel but I think just for one night. Yes. I don t think you d want to be in there for multiple nights. I would agree. I would want to experience it once here in Japan but I don t need to sleep in a capsule for a week or a month. Book a hotel or an apartment or something else. So yeah that is it for now we ll see you guys in the next video. Bye. This is part of our Travel in Japan video series showcasing Japanese food, Japanese culture and Japanese experiences. Music by Artlist: https://artlist.io/Audrey-184699

Angel Falls aka Salto Angel in Canaima National Park is the highest waterfall in the world! In this second episode of our Venezuela 2019 travel vlog, we continue our adventures South America at Canaima National Park. For both Lexie and I, visiting Angel Falls was always a travel goal. With the current mess with Nicolas Maduro, the Venezuela crisis hitting a peak in the news, and the massive drop in tourism, we thought we would have to put it off indefinitely. Fortunately we had great contacts (Pablo and Sandy), who made this dream trip possible for us. So we flew into Caracas, and the story begins. They say "Don t blame a country by the actions of its government" So we couldn t believe all the bad Venezuela news, we wanted to meet the people, and see its nature and landscape. The day started with a 3 hour boat ride up Rio Carrao, with a stop at La Poza de Felicidad, or Happiness Pool. When we got to our campsite, we found it abandoned. Angels Falls used to get 500+ tourists a day, and now it was receiving what looked like it s first 2 in a long time. We set up our hammocks and begun to explore. We found a crack in the jungle, and bam... There it was Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world, peeking out between the trees. The next morning we started early and hiked an hour to a viewpoint and pool at the base of the falls. We even managed to get drone video of angel falls. It was the perfect travel day. Our hearts go out the the Venezuelan people. Myself and my travel companion Lexie Alford visited this beautiful place late 2018, with the mission to show another side of a country in crisis. We planned to show the beauty of the people, and the natural beauty of the country. This is not a video about the current economical or political situation. This is a Venezeula travel vlog of what we experienced as tourists. #FearlessandFar #Venezuela #Angelfalls Want more videos? We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! So we extended our 1 year trip to now FOUR years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

Dive into the science of ocean currents (including the Global Conveyor Belt current), and find out how climate change affects them. -- In 1992, a cargo ship carrying bath toys got caught in a storm. Shipping containers washed overboard, and the waves swept 28,000 rubber ducks and other toys into the North Pacific. But they didn’t stick together -- the ducks have since washed up all over the world. How did this happen? Jennifer Verduin dives into the science of ocean currents.
