At $25 per pound, macadamia nuts are the world s most expensive nuts.The nuts keep breaking price records every year. Macadamia trees take 7 to 10 years to begin producing nuts, and the nuts can only be harvested a few times a year. Although the demand for the nuts has largely outpaced the supply, exporters worry that a bubble in the global macadamia industry is about to burst. Following is a transcript of the video: Macadamia nuts are the most expensive nuts in the world. A one pound bag can cost around $25, almost twice as much as other nuts like almonds, and they ve been breaking price records year after year. Considered a high-quality dessert nut because of its rich, buttery flavor, macadamia nuts are a popular treat and a trendy import in countries like China and the United States. But why are macadamia nuts so expensive? The main reason is the slow harvesting process. While there are ten species of macadamia trees, only 2 produce the pricey nuts and it takes seven to 10 years for the trees to even begin producing nuts.The flowering trees originated in northeastern Australia and the nuts were eaten by the Australian aboriginal people. They called the trees "Kindal Kindal," but British colonists eventually renamed them macadamia, after Dr. John Macadam. Despite originating in Australia, macadamia trees were first commercially grown in Hawaii. Hawaii has the perfect climate for the trees– they need lots of rain, rich soil, and warm weather to thrive, which means regions that don t meet those requirements have to import macadamia nuts all the way from Hawaii, South Africa, Latin America, or Australia. And because it takes the trees anywhere from four to six months to flower, the nuts all mature at different times of the year. They re only harvested five to six times a year, typically by hand. Their thick shell, often removed before sale, makes it difficult to tell the ripe nuts from the unripe ones, making the harvesting process more work-intensive and costly. Macadamias have become increasingly popular because of their high fat content. With 20.9 grams of fat per pound, they contain more fat than any other nuts, which is why people used to think macadamia nuts were unhealthy. In reality, a majority of that fat is 100% cholesterol free and contains palmitoleic acid, which can improve your metabolism and help your body maintain healthy levels of insulin. Each nut is made up of 80% oil and 4% sugar. The high fat and low sugar content makes macadamia nuts ideal for many healthy eating and weight loss programs, including the Keto diet which cuts carbs while emphasizing good fats. Last year, the price of macadamias broke records again. In Hawaii, nut-in-shell macadamias started the season with their highest net farm value ever at 100 cents per pound, and ended the season with a new record high of 110 cents per pound. The farm value on Hawaii s macadamia crops is estimated to be worth $53.9 million. Meanwhile, countries like China who import them on a massive scale, are now working on growing their own harvests because of how valuable the nuts are. However, for the time being, the demand for macadamia nuts outpaces the supply, which drives up prices. But the global macadamia supply is expected to increase, thanks to countries like China planting macadamia trees. Now, China is set to produce HALF of the global macadamia crop by 2022. Exporters worry that a bubble in the global macadamia industry is about to burst.If that happens, macadamia nuts may no longer be the most expensive nuts in the world. And tonight we re going to be having Biryani which is a local specialty of this city. We re going to be trying it out at Paradise restaurant. They have multiple different kinds of variations. I think we re going to try as many as four. Let s go inside and check it out. So guys now we re in the restaurant I m going to explain to you about Biryani rice. The first layer is saffron rice then we have exotic masala rice in the middle and then you ve got heavenly mutton at the bottom. Now there are a number of different variations as well. So mutton is the most common and famous one, especially from this city. But you can also have it with chicken, different kinds of meat. You can also have it with fish, shrimp or you can do it vegetarian style. So now I m going to tell you a little bit more about the history of Biryani. Biryani is an Urdu word from the Persian language. It means to fry or roast rice. It is more popular in South India because this region consumes more rice. Mutton lamb. Thank you. Sir this is veg biryani. Veg. Thank you. And that is egg. Egg biryani. Wonderful. Thank you. This one is the chicken. Yes, chicken. Oh wonderful. Thank you. That is enough. Hahaha. He is just going all out. Hahaha. I know. I love. You ve gotta love the portions man. They are very generous here. Alright so I m so excited to try the biryani. Like I ve just been thinking about this all day long. For this to be the city s most famous dish and not only that but for this place to be considered one of the best places to have it. So it is a Qubani ka Meetha it is an authentic Hyderabadi sweet with stewed apricots. So if you take a look here you can see all of the stewed apricots in here. And they asked me if I wanted a scoop of vanilla ice cream and I m like yeah of course. The lassi itself is kind of like a yogurt-based drink. It is very rich. Well I shouldn t be talking about until I actually try this one. Woah. It is one of the best lassi s I ve had ever. Sweet. It is thick. It is kind of creamy. It is very filling too. It is like a meal in a glass. Just been working on that lassi. It is so good. What a great way to end a wonderful meal. Briyani here were incredible. We tried 4 different ones. Mutton. Chicken. Veg. Egg. The mutton and the veg were by far the best. Absolutely loved it. So if you re coming to this city you have to come to Paradise restaurant to try all of these. Man it is just so good. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Cost: $50-$100 Time: 5-6 hours Skill Level: Beginner Tools List for Painting a Mold-Resistant Bathroom: Vacuum Paintbrush Paint roller Shopping List: Antimicrobial paint Painters tape 220 grit sandpaper Masks Rags Bucket Roller tray Steps: 1. Use painters tape to protect any tile that’s against the surface being painted. 2. Lightly sand the walls with 220 grit sandpaper. Wear a mask while sanding. 3. Suck up the dust from sanding with a vacuum and then wipe the walls down lightly with a damp rag to remove the remaining dust. 4. Pour the antimicrobial paint into a bucket. 5. Use a paintbrush to cut around the edges of the wall with the new paint. 6. Paint the rest of the wall using the roller and the roller tray filled with paint. 7. Allow the first coat to dry and then apply a second coat. Resources: To prevent mildew from forming on bathroom walls, Mauro points out that it’s important to keep the shower vent clean and use it for at least 30 minutes after a shower. If mildew appears, take a bucket of water with a small amount of bleach in it, dip a rag into the bucket, and gently clean the walls to avoid damaging the paint. Mauro painted the walls with Behr Marquee interior paint in Gray Shimmer with an eggshell finish (https://www.behr.com/consumer). The paint is mildew resistant. Mauro applied two coats to ensure even coverage. The other materials Mauro used for this job, including the paint brushes, tape, trays, and drop cloths, can all be found at home centers.
