Cashmere is one of the most sought-after fibers in the world. It s fine hairs are softer, lighter, and can be up to three times more insulating than sheep wool. It has been a prized material for centuries, but its quality comes at a cost and a luxury cashmere jumper could cost you well over $500. So why is it so expensive? Cashmere is known for being one of the softest fibers in the world, it s thin hairs mean that it can be woven into incredibly soft, luxurious garments and it s long lasting, but it comes at a cost.  Cashmere doesn t come from a sheep like you might think, but from the cashmere goat. These goats are found across the Himalayas where temperatures can drop to -30°C and their freezing cold habitat means that they grow an incredibly thick, warm coat. Cashmere goats have two layers of hair, thick wirey guard hairs and a super-soft cashmere undercoat. While a sheep can produce at least 3 kilos of wool each year, a cashmere goat will only give you around 200 grams. Because of the tiny amount each goat produces the supply is severely limited, and the fibers can only be collected once a year. Even when you ve harvested the fibers the usable weight halves once it s been stripped of grease, dirt, and thicker hairs and cashmere still only makes up 0.5% of the world s total wool production. Once you have the pure cashmere, processing it takes a lot of work. The fibers are first dyed to the right color and aerated to stop them clumping together. Cashmere s softness means it needs to be treated delicately throughout the whole process, any chemicals or over processing will damage the fibers. The fibers are then carded - a process that detangles and lines up the hairs in thin sheets so that they can be spun into a yarn. The quality of cashmere is graded on its fineness and length, and high quality individual cashmere hairs can be as thin as 14 micrometers. Cheaper cashmere products have become hugely popular recently. These claim to offer the quality of cashmere for a lower price, some may use a slightly lower grade of cashmere, or different processing methods to make the end result more affordable. And while they are comparatively cheap, they re still usually at least twice the price of wool. There have been extreme cases of mislabelling too, and some supposedly 100% cashmere products have been found to contain yak hair or even rat fur. If you do find a really cheap product that claims to be cashmere, it may be too good to be true. Ask This Old House mason Mark McCullough travels to San Diego to repair a crack in a concrete retaining wall with a stucco finish. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 2-3 hours Cost: $50 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Repairing a Cracked Stucco Wall: Shovel Cold chisel Hammer Bucket Margin trowel Finishing trowel Tuck pointer Masonry brush Shopping List: Type S mortar Steps: 1. Start by making sure the entire crack is fully exposed. This may require digging out the back side of the retaining wall with a shovel. 2. Once the full crack is exposed, take a chisel and a hammer and remove concrete on both sides of the crack until you have one continuous gap in the wall. This will make it easier to slide the mortar in. The gap should be about 1-2”. 3. Clean out the enlarged crack with a hose or a bucket of water. 4. Mix the mortar in a bucket with a margin trowel. Add a little more water than usual to allow the mortar to flow more easily into the crack. 5. Scoop up the mortar with the margin trowel and pour it slowly into the crack. Use the tuck pointer to push it firmly into place. It helps to hold a finishing trowel against the back side of the crack to keep it from pouring out. Leave about _” on the front side of the wall to leave room for the stucco pattern. 6. Allow the mortar to dry for about 1 hour. 7. Mix a new batch of mortar at the normal consistency. 8. Apply the new mortar to the front of the crack using the margin trowel until it is flush with the rest of the wall. 9. Allow the mortar to dry for about 5 minutes. 10. Using the tuck pointer, the masonry brush, and your fingers, carve out small chunks of the mortar to mimic the texture of the stucco pattern. Dampen the brush and expose some of the sand in the mortar. Do this until the texture of the patch matches the texture of the rest of the wall. 11. Allow the mortar to dry and cure for about 3-4 weeks. 12. Once the mortar has cured, apply a masonry stain to it until it matches the rest of the wall. Resources: Mark points out that if a retaining wall is cracked or damaged, the best way to remedy the situation is to identify what caused the crack in the first place and eliminate that cause. However, in many cases, that type of solution won’t be practical for a retaining wall. To simply alleviate the symptoms, the materials required to repair a concrete retaining wall, including the trowel, masonry brush, and mortar are fairly straightforward and easy to locate at home centers. The masonry stain can also be found at home centers. If you bring a chip of the retaining wall with you to the home center, they should be able to closely color match the stain. Bird s nest soup is a delicacy in Asia made from the dissolved nests of swiftlets, a small bird native to Southeast Asia. A bowl of bird s nest soup can cost more than $100 at some restaurants, due to growing demand and a limited number of wild birds. The soup is popular in China, where it s believed to have healing properties. We stopped by the Oriental Garden in NYC s Chinatown to taste it for ourselves. Following is a transcript of the video: Narrator: Bird nest soup. It s a gelatinous mixture, made from, you guessed it, bird nests. You can find it on the menu at certain Chinese restaurants like at Oriental Garden, here in New York City. But it ll cost you. Cici: For one person it costs $32.95, and for four people it costs $128. Abby: And that s normal pricing? Cici: Yeah, that s totally normal. Abby: Wow. Narrator: So, what makes it so expensive? People in China have been eating bird nests for more than a thousand years. It s believed to have near magical properties, from curing cancer to helping children grow taller. And the main ingredient? The partially dissolved nest of a swiftlet, a small bird native to Southeast Asia. Three times a year, swiftlets build nests out of their sticky saliva on cave walls and cliff sides, where they raise their young. It s the high cost of these saliva nests that makes bird s nest soup so expensive. Here in New York City s Chinatown, for example, a couple dozen were selling for more than a thousand dollars. Until recently, the most common way of getting the nests was by harvesting them from the wild. Creighton: There are many dangers involved in harvesting nests from caves. They would climb up without really any safety nets or harnesses, that kind of thing, and just try and extract the nests from the cave wall, and they d be, in some cases, many stories up. Narrator: But for many, the risk was worth the reward. Creighton: Harvesters would often try and collect as many nests as they could, regardless of whether they were fully formed, and they would just take them repeatedly. Narrator: In some regions, swiftlets couldn t compete with the rate of harvest, and so their populations plummeted. Between 1957 and 1997, the number of swiftlets declined by as much as 88% in parts of Southeast Asia, largely due to over-harvesting. And as a result, the price of bird s nests skyrocketed. Creighton: The price for bird nests, I would say, peaked in around the early 1990s. Narrator: Around that time, nests were selling for up to $1,000 a pound. Adjusting for inflation, that would be around $2,000 today. Those high prices earned bird nests the title "Caviar of the East." And they also fueled a new industry. You could call it hospitality. Scores of people across Southeast Asia looking to cash in on the bird nest trade started investing in swiftlet hotels. Creighton: People just found that if there was a vacant building or, say, the upper story of a building was uninhabited, then swiftlets would make their way inside, and they would start just using the buildings as their nesting sites. Then these rumors kind of emerged over time about how much money you could make swiftlet farming really overnight. Narrator: And they weren t just rumors. In Myanmar, for example, swiftlet hotels can bring in at least $6,000 a year, while the average annual income is just over $1,100. And the more swiftlets you draw in, the more money you make.  George: According to locals, in order to successfully farm for the bird s nests, there are a few factors involved. Factor one: The locals believe that abundance is related to charity. The more charitable and kind they are to the community, the more the birds will come to build nests in their houses. Factor two: technology. To attract the swiftlets to build nests, the house keepers have to employ the right technology using speakers to continuously broadcast the correct frequency of the chirping swiftlets at the optimum volume. Factor three: they believe in showing care and concern to the swiftlets. They will be careful not to harvest the nests if there are eggs in the nests. Narrator: In the last few decades, the swiftlet farming industry has exploded. From 1998 to 2013, the estimated number of swiftlet hotels grew from 900 to 60,000 in Malaysia alone. But while this increased supply, it didn t exactly slash the price. Today we are visiting Odaiba (お台場). This is a manmade island in the Bay of Tokyo and we have come here because this place is known for its futuristic constructions, lots of shopping malls. They have a beach. You get amazing views of Tokyo. So yeah we re going to be spending the whole day here today and taking you on a tour of Odaiba (お台場). We ve just walked into our first mall (DECKS) and already there is a lot going on. I ve seen Hello Kitty. There is Legoland. There is a Madame Tussauds wax museum with Lady Gaga standing outside. You can rent kimonos. We re going to show you guys the view of the rainbow bridge and the Tokyo skyline. Rainbow bridge is the bridge that we took over on the train to get here. At the beach we re seeing some people sunbathing, working on their tan. There is standup paddleboarders. There is a few people swimming. I m going to show you the statue of liberty in Odaiba (お台場) because yes apparently there is one here in Tokyo. We found the robot at the info desk. You can approach her and ask her questions and apparently, she responds. I don t know if she speaks English but this is my first time seeing a robot helping people which is so weird. I would say this has been worth the trip to Odaiba (お台場) just to see a robot. And there is still a museum that we re planning to visit later on. It is a museum about science, technology and apparently, they have robots in there too. The tunnel of the future. Of the future. This is taking us up to Fuji TV building. Apparently, this is going to be the best view from up here. What you doing? We re shopping just a little bit. we are now at basement level here in Diver City. Yes so in the basement of this mall there is a gigantic gigantic food court. Now going to show you guys the most famous Robot here in Odaiba (お台場). This one is called Unicorn Gundam and I don t know my Japanese anime or cartoons too well but maybe some of you might recognize him. He looks like a white transformer. This is the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan). It looks super futuristic behind me. And we ve come here to see robots. We are here for another robot demonstration. Next up we re going to be meeting Asimo. ime for our final stop of the day. We have come down to the beach and yeah we re just going to end things here. The sun is going to be setting soon and this is just a nice chilled spot. There is someone swimming right now. People are just like getting their feet wet. But it is nice and relaxing. There is a bit of a breeze. So a good way to end things off here in Odaiba (お台場) with my man.
