This video is in partnership with Bill and Melinda Gates. You can check out the Gates Annual Letter here: https://b-gat.es/2GxIwba Concrete is responsible for 8% of humanity’s carbon emissions because making its key ingredient - cement - chemically releases CO2, and because we burn fossil fuels to make it happen. Is it possible to reconstruct sound from high-speed video images? Part of this video was sponsored by LastPass: http://bit.ly/2SmRQkk Special thanks to Dr. Abe Davis for revisiting his research with me: http://abedavis.com This video was based on research by Dr. Abe Davis and colleagues. I found out about this work years ago and was fascinated by the way he was able to capture vibration information in image-only video. I always imagined the motions of objects would be visible as when recording a tuning fork in slow motion - so deriving sound from high speed images seemed a feasible task. But the reality is much more difficult. Sound vibrations only cause objects to wiggle by about a micrometer. This is much smaller than a pixel, so the algorithm must understand the characteristics of the image. A move in one direction should cause some pixels to lighten slightly, while others darken - and this behavior is correlated along the edges of the image. So noise can be reduced because it s random over the image and there are enough places to sample that you can get it to cancel out. Something I m wondering now is - would it be possible to capture sound in a single image? I m thinking it would have to be an image of a large object or space because the wavelengths of typical sounds are quite long. Maybe a high frequency sound could be imaged in a suitable medium... Venezuela, a jewel in South America. This travel vlog is episode 4 of our experience as tourists in a country in a pressure cooker. The Venezuela Crisis has been in the spotlight for quite some time now, and with an invite from a local friend Sandy, we set out to explore this beautiful country despite what it had been saying in the news. What we found was an incredible country which took our hearts. We begin this episode landing back in Puerto Ordaz from seeing Angel Falls in Canaima National Park. From there, my Canadian friend Sandy, who has been living in Venezuela for over 3 years, picks us up for a roadtrip. We drive 4 hours north to the town he is living in called Lecheria, near Barcelona, Venezuela. We then go island hopping to visit Isla Faro, and that s where we encounter our first run in with trouble... Cacti and Snakes. The outro of this video was re-recorded after the incident when humanitarian aid was stopped by Maduro at the border between Venezuela and Colombia. Our hearts go out the the Venezuelan people. Myself and my travel companion Lexie Alford visited this beautiful place late 2018, with the mission to show another side of a country in crisis. We planned to show the beauty of the people, and the natural beauty of the country. This is not a video about the current economical or political situation. This is a Venezeula travel vlog of what we experienced as tourists. #FearlessandFar #Venezuela #Travel ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Join the Adventure Newsletter https://fearlessandfar.com/join-our-adventure-newsletter 5 Advanced Travel Tips I Wish I Knew When I Started https://fearlessandfar.com/5-advanced-travel-tips-i-wish-i-knew-when-i-started EXPERIENCES OVER POSSESSIONS SHIRTS https://shop.fearlessandfar.com/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out Lexie s Venezuela Blog Posts How we did it: http://living-lost.com/2018/10/31/getting-there-angel-falls-venezuela-2018/ Also her Instagram @lexielimitless Big love to our trip organizer Pablo Martínez and my awesome friend Sandy Corey for helping us put this all together. The grand abode has distinct Californian and Parisian influences — reminiscent of a modern château — thanks to the striking French doors and European oak hardwood flooring in the entry and traditional moulding on the ceiling. You’ll fall in love with the living room’s large curved sofa, the luxe Calacatta marble vent hood in the kitchen and the array of sculptural lighting illuminating the home. Since we don t have room for things and our life is constant "experience," I thought for Kara s birthday, the best gift I could give her would be to show her the impact she s had on the world over the last 3 years. Ask This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey helps an expecting couple select and install a gas dryer. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 3-4 hours Cost: $800 and up Skill Level: Expert – licensed professionals only Tools List for Installing a Gas Clothes Dryer: Pipe wrench (x2) Drill Hole saw Screwdriver Shopping List: Gas pipes Gas pipe fittings Gas nipples Pipe dope Dryer vent Dryer vent cover Flexible gas connector Gas leak detector Gas tubing hanger Steps: 1. Any work involving gas can be dangerous and should be left to a licensed professional. 2. Start by shutting off the gas at the meter using a wrench or at the nearest gas shutoff upstream of where the new gas work will happen. 3. Measure and connect a series of gas pipes, fittings and nipples to the source of the gas to the rough location of the dryer. Secure all the connections between the pipes and the fittings with pipe dope and tighten them with the wrenches. 4. At the bottom of the gas work closest to the dryer, add a drip cap to allow for a sediment clean out. 5. Connect the flexible gas line to the end of the new gas pipes and then to the gas fitting on the dryer using the wrenches. 6. Drill a hole in the exterior wall where the dryer will vent. Do this using the drill with a hole saw attachment. 7. Insert the dryer vent cover into the dryer vent and tighten the clamp with a screwdriver until it’s secure. 8. Feed the dryer vent into the wall and then screw the dryer vent cover to the exterior wall. 9. Connect the dryer vent to the dryer and secure it to the dryer using a clamp and the screwdriver. 10. Plug in the dryer (this power is only to spin the drum) and turn the gas back on. 11. Test all the new gas work for any leaks using a leak detector. 12. Once you’ve confirmed the gas work is all perfectly sealed, secure the pipes to the walls using screws and the gas tubing hangers. Resources: Richard recommends that if the electrical service to the house is insufficient, a gas dryer could be a more suitable option for installation. Working with gas can be extremely dangerous, so, as with any other gas appliances in the house, this type of work should only be handled by a licensed professional.
