Join us on a day trip to Shirakawago in this travel guide as we explore the most beautiful place we visited in Japan. Shirakawa-go (白川郷) is known for its traditional Japanese farmhouses (gassho) - also known as the praying hand houses for its a-frame shape - in a valley surrounded by mountains. The trip from Takayama was approximately 50 minutes away and cost roughly $20 USD per person. Our first stop in Shirakawa was the observatory where we had sweeping panoramic views of the incredible architecture and mountains from a high vantage point which cost 200 Yen per person for the local bus. In terms of getting back down, we decided to walk which ended up being a great idea. Walking around Shirakawago Village you notice houses, shops, rice paddies, and people out doing laundry. We visited in summer; however, every season offers a unique atmosphere in the village. Something fascinating is that cold drinks are refrigerated with mountain running water and trash is to be carried and disposed of by guests. To cool down we grabbed our first bite which was a refreshing green-tea matcha ice cream for 350 Yen per person. Our next stop was the outdoor open-air museum (600 Yen per person), which ended up being one of our favorite attractions, visiting temples and crossing bridges along the way. We grabbed soba and tempura for lunch. In the open air museum we visited waterfalls, streams and gassho houses. We ended up just hopping from farmhouse to farmhouse to call down enjoying some free tea along the way. Ask This Old House mason Mark McCullough delicately restores a damaged, historic fireplace that is built with custom, nearly irreplaceable bricks. Start by adding support to the arch of the fireplace with a piece of Masonite and a few pieces of 2x4”, cut to size. Hammer them into place until the Masonite feels fully supported. 2. Identify the bricks that have fallen out of place or settled and plan to remove only the ones that need readjustment. 3. Carefully remove the old mortar holding the bricks. High quality, older masonry jobs used significantly thinner joints, so if a chisel doesn’t fit, try a margin trowel or a flat jointer. 4. Using the back of the trowel, gently tap the brick to see if it will break the bond of the other bed joint surrounding the brick. Slide the trowel through that joint and remove the mortar there as well. 5. With all the mortar removed around the brick, carefully pull that brick out of the fireplace. 6. Repeat this process with all the bricks that have settled. 7. Mix a new batch of mortar to match the old stuff. For thinner joints, a custom mix with a thin aggregate may need to be used. The proportion should be one scoop of mortar to three scoops of sand. Add dye to the mix to match the original color. Add water until the mortar is roughly an oatmeal consistency. 8. Back and side butter the bricks with the mortar and slide them back into place. 9. Once the bricks are in the correct position, fill in the joints the way you normally would when repointing. 10. If the joints don’t match well enough, consider removing all the mortar and repointing the entire fireplace. Resources: For a job as complicated like this, only a select handful of masons might be willing to tackle the job. Be prepared to get the job turned down by a few before you find someone who is willing to do it. To hold the arch in place while Mark extracted select bricks, Mark used a piece of masonite and scrap 2x4”s, which can be found at any home center. To extract the brick from the ultra thin masonry joints, Mark used a margin trowel and a tuck pointer to try and slip between the two bricks. These can also be found at any home center on masonry supply store. When Mark repointed the brick, he needed to use a special mix to match the original fireplace and also ensure that the aggregate with thin enough to slide through the small joints. To do so, he used a premixed Evolution N mortar with just Portland cement and lime in it, which is manufactured by Ciment Quebec (https://cimentquebec.com/en_us/). For the aggregate, he mixed in a Number 70 Silica Sand, which is a thin restoration sand manufactured by Taggart Sand of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. To match the color of the original mortar, he also added a Series H Concentrated Mortar Color, which is manufactured by Solomon Colors, Inc. (http://www.solomoncolors.com/). And what better way to experience the ocean by kayaking through the beautiful Luon Cave? It truly set the standards for waterfall experiences for the rest of our trip. We got up (way too) early for it, but if you ask me, it was worth it. 02:12 - Lashio This was our first taste of real village life! 02:17 - Along the Burma Road (Waterfall Exploration) We headed off with the ultimate SOLID guys from Myanmar Adventure Outfitters and got our adrenaline-fix jumping off smaller cliffs and venturing into waterfalls. 02:27 - Ban Khaw Village We got to stay with the friendly locals and learnt about their day-to-day lives. They welcomed us with the biggest open arms ever! THAILAND (02:45) 02:48 - Chiang Mai Our first stop in our Thailand leg. 02:53 - Elephant Retirement Park Elephants are the national symbols of Thailand, and we got to visit these lovely animals on our Thailand adventure. Join us as we try traditional Japanese Food in a Ryokan eating a multi-course Kaiseki dinner in Takayama, Japan. One of the best experiences about staying in a Ryokan is the full-course traditional Japanese cuisine they serve you for dinner. In total, our Kaiseki meal featured 11 courses of Japanese dishes. All if all our Ryokan meal consisted of the following food/drink items: 1) Japanese fruit wine made with quince (fruity and floral) 2) Bento box 3) chicken and cheese 4) mochi balls 5) mackerel fish 6) green tofu with shrimp and pinenuts 7) pork with mushrooms and vegetables 8) White rice in a bowl 8) Japanese steamed Hida beef bun in a bamboo basket 9) Sashimi Bonito fish with ginger and grated radish 10) Shabu-shabu with vegetables, tofu and Hida beef meat and sesame sauce 11) Western-style course with Hida beef, brocolli, corn, sweet potato, pumpkin, potato with rice and 12) pickles and miso soup 13) Roasted green tea Japanese desserts: 14) Milk pudding 15) Fruit cake with a piece of pineapple The presentation, attention to detail and the way everything was served made this Japanese dinner one of the most unique experiences we had during our trip to Japan. Spring is here, and it’s a time for spring cleaning! But while you might be deciding what room to tackle first in your house, there’s one elderly lady who has decided to deep-clean this planet -- one beach at a time! And that lovely lady is Pat Smith. She was inspired by a documentary about the negative effects of plastic pollution on the planet. What she saw in the film kept her up at night worrying about the problem. When she got up in the morning, she decided to do something about it. Pat Smith is from Cornwall, which is the most southwestern county in the UK. With the Celtic Sea on one side and the English Channel on the other, Cornwall is a place with a LOT of beaches. And this 70-year-old grandmother has already cleaned 52 of them within a single year! Her mission is to raise as much awareness as possible about not only the uselessness of plastic straws but also the harm they can bring to the environment and its wildlife. - One of the biggest culprits of this pollution problem is single-use plastic. n fact, every flimsy little plastic straw will outlive every person living on the planet right now! - Scientists can’t really measure the exact amount of plastic in the ocean, but an engineering professor from the University of Georgia estimated that it’s between 5 and 14 million tons. - Large bodies of water become filled with microplastic that could end up in our tap water or in the drinking water of animals that we use for meat. The food that both animals and humans eat could be grown in toxic soil. - Smith has already convinced local businesses like cafes and restaurants to ditch the use of plastic straws. - It ll take hundreds of years to rid the world of the estimated 9.2 billion tons of plastic (only around 7% of which ever make it to recycling). Smith’s efforts are only the tip of a really big mountain of garbage, and it’s gonna take a lot more people like her to undo the damage. Come join us for a Japanese Ryokan Tour where we showcase what it is like to stay at a traditional Japanese hotel with onsen. Ready to experience a Japanese ryokan?! In this video, we give you a full tour of our stay at Ryokan Seiryu, a traditional Japanese inn in the heart of Takayama. We spent a night here and got to experience the public baths (onsen), eat a traditional meal, wear yukatas, and enjoy the place. Hopefully, this video gives you an idea of what to expect if you decide to stay at a ryokan in Japan! We start our Ryoka tour outside where we show you the outside of the building. You enter the Ryokan by first taking off your shoes and putting our Japanese slippers. Inside there is a reception desk, breakfast dining hall, coffee/tea station, couches and onsen Japanese saunas all on the first floor. To reach our Ryokan room we take the elevator to our floor. The room itself is simple with a traditional Japanese dining table featuring ground chairs and tatami mats for sleeping. There are plenty of sliding doors and the table is replaced at night for sleeping mattresses. Windows reveal mountain views outside with lots of lush green forest. Going to the Japanese public baths involves getting naked, taking a shower and enjoying the public baths. Men and women are separated in the onsen.
