To tell you the truth, even at first sight, the ship looked bizarre. Rusty and run-down, it seemed to drift mindlessly, without any destination in mind. - The mysterious finding brought more questions than answers. If S.S. Cotopaxi sank almost 9 decades ago, how did it reappear on the surface? What happened to the crew, and how did they disappeared without a trace? - Over centuries, there have been so many mysterious disappearances in that area that the chances are high that you ll find one or two ships that fell victim to the infamous Triangle. Maybe it’ll be the Patriot, a passenger schooner that left Charleston, South Carolina, on December 30, 1812, and headed for New York City. - The Bermuda Triangle had already gained popularity in the 15th century when Christopher Columbus documented weird compass readings and bizarre lights in the area. Its nickname, "Hurricane Alley," speaks for itself. - As for airplanes, probably the most inexplicable disappearance happened on December 5, 1945, and got the name "The Lost Patrol." Flight-19 was the code name for 5 bomber planes that flew from the naval base in Florida on a training flight. - Well, no doubt, it all looks very suspicious, and the notoriety of the Bermuda Triangle might be well-earned, but think of this. The area of the Bermuda Triangle varies from 500,000 to 1,510,000 square miles, depending on the person describing the anomalous zone. How do touchscreens work anyway? Johnson was the first to create touchscreen technology, these displays hadn t gained popularity till the 1970s, when the resistive touchscreen was accidentally invented. Further developing on that new technology, scientists at the University of Toronto invented the first multi-touch display in the 1980s. You can imagine how much that inconvenience was slowing down their progress! It was then when Dr. Hurst and his colleagues thought of using some electrically conductive paper in their research. By developing this idea, they eventually created the first computer touchscreen ever! - What’s the magic behind the touchscreens we know and love today? If you thought that just one technology stands behind this "swipable" phenomenon of our time, think again! In fact, there are more than half a dozen approaches to make touchscreens work. - The technology is simple: you press on the screen hard enough, and it bends and resists your touch (hence the name). But what happens next? The thing is that a resistive screen consists of two layers that can conduct electricity. - Capacitive touch screens are made from either indium tin oxide or copper. Both these materials keep electrical charges in super-tiny wires, with each of them way thinner than a human hair. - Ever wondered why your cell phone won t respond when you re wearing gloves? The problem is that clothes don t conduct electricity (unless you have special gloves fitted with conductive threads of course!). - Most people don t realize just how widely used touchscreens are! Ironically, they can’t just stop producing new cars, because that would mean firing a lot of workers and running out of business. - Some taxi graveyards have hundreds of cars, like the one in Chongqing, China that looks like a yellow sea from above. Others have dozens of cars parked in all the wrong places and causing discomfort to city dwellers like the illegal taxi graveyard in Queens. - You can see impressive-looking bicycle graveyards all across China. It’s not that the Chinese hate using bikes and decided to dispose of them in such a merciless way. In 2017, the bike-sharing business took off in China. - Some of the old buses become a shelter for the homeless, others are turned into art objects adorned with graffiti. Someone in Ontario who had quite a few of them at their disposal lined them up and made a fence out of them. - Some train cars get rusty or are somehow defective and simply await repairs. Others are left to rot because they used to run on railroads that no longer exist. This is the case with the West Branch Railroad in Maine, for example. - It’s not only vehicles get abandoned and pile up. Just as British as tea and double-deckers, the iconic red phone booths also end up in the middle of nowhere these days. - Can you imagine whole cities getting abandoned? And I’m not talking about little villages somewhere in the mountains. The capital of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, for instance, is built of marble and looks majestic but is basically a ghost town. My wireless speakers, earphones, hands-free calling – what’s the magic behind Bluetooth tech? How does it all work? The idea of what we call “Bluetooth” today was first introduced back in 1989. Dr. Nils Rydbeck, who was the chief technology officer at Ericsson Mobile, and inventor Dr. Johan Ullman had this revolutionary idea to develop a pair of wireless headsets. They brought Dr. Jaap Haartsen on to the project. A mere 5 years later, he’d be the engineer who made the breakthrough and came out with the first protocol. It took a few more years to perfect the technology. But finally, in 1999, they presented their first hands-free headset to the world at the Comdex computer exposition and trade show in Las Vegas. SUMMARY - Three companies were working separately to create short-range radio technologies that would connect computers and different devices using short-wave frequencies. But since the invention was in its early stages, Intel, Ericsson, and Nokia decided that the best way to proceed was to create a single wireless standard. - Bluetooth works a lot like Wi-Fi. It uses radio waves to send data between devices at short distances. Now, whereas Wi-Fi uses radio waves to transmit data between your router (where your Wi-Fi comes from) and your device, Bluetooth does it between devices. - Bluetooth can connect to 8 devices at the same time without any interference from other wireless items like garage doors or baby monitors. - The Bluetooth transmitters in both your computer and your devices use 79 different frequencies in that range. - If you’re wondering what devices use Bluetooth nowadays, the answer is almost all of them. Phones, headphones, earbuds, speakers, stereos, TVs, cameras, cars, tablets, game consoles, you name it! - When Bluetooth first came out, it was really easy for someone to access your data without your permission. But over time this technology has become more secure. - There’s this trend called bluejacking where a person or company can send you their electronic business card or an ad as a text message using Bluetooth. Of course, when you see that, you either ignore it or panic! The rule is 15-20% of the bill, so get ready to do some mental math each time you eat out. - If you’ve finished eating and your tray is now full of wrappers, used napkins, and empty boxes, take it to the trashcan and dispose of the garbage yourself. - I was pretty surprised when I found out that opening a gift as soon as you get it is considered bad manners in certain parts of the world. - Americans love small talk, so don’t be surprised if a stranger just starts chatting with you while you’re waiting in line or sharing an elevator. - Let me bust the myth that Americans constantly walk around smiling ear-to-ear. Nobody does that because that’d be weird. - The unspoken rule is to stand about an arm’s length away when you’re talking with someone. - There might be some Americans who greet the European way, but overall, we don’t kiss each other as a way to say hi. - The stereotype of the loud American tourist might ring true most of the time since we tend to project our voices, even out in public. - “No” means “no” even if it’s said indirectly and super politely. - You should ride in the backseat because the driver might give you a weird look otherwise. - There are plenty of families here that have a “No Shoes Indoors” policy, although I’d say the majority don’t. - If you’re ever out and about in the US, you’ll see a lot of people running errands in sweatpants, gym shorts, baseball caps, or even their PJs! That perfumed piece of handmade soap you carry on with you has a wonderful aroma, but only for the first few minutes. - When a flight attendant approaches you to ask a question, it’s polite to take off your headphones and pay them your full attention. - Flight attendants confess that one of the most frustrating things is when passengers start trying to persuade them to change their seat assignments. The thing is, they simply can’t do that. - When taking off, taxiing, and landing, as well as during turbulence, you should stay seated and fasten your belt in case anything happens. - If you insistently press the call button for no good reason, chances are you’ll be asked to stop doing that — or even ignored completely. - When you ask a flight attendant what they have, you make other passengers wait longer and get edgy — consider this when you take your time ordering your food and drinks. - One of the downsides of working as a flight attendant is that you only get paid for the hours of actual flight. All the work you do while on land is free. - Safety presentations are really similar on most airlines, but it’s still worth it to refresh them in your memory before the flight. - It’s absolutely not fine to poke or grab a flight attendant for any reason, just like any other person. Some attendants say, though, that there are people who find it okay to touch them by the knee or ankle when they pass by.
