We had four days to explore the island and during that time, we visited fishing villages, walked along the famous red sand beaches, toured the home of Anne of Green Gables, sampled our first lobster roll, and enjoyed a delicious seafood feast prepared by Sam’s uncle who is a chef on the island. It was a really fun visit, so all that and more coming up in this video! We quickly retreated back to the farmhouse we had rented, and despite the mosquitoes attacking, we did get to enjoy a nice sunset on our sprint back. The following morning, we got up bright and early ready to explore the island. Our first stop, a beach for Togo to splash around in. After our visit to the beach, we hopped back in the car and drove up to Cavendish, where the main attraction is Green Gables Heritage Place. Whether you’ve read the books, seen the movies, or watched the series, setting foot here will transport you to the late 19th century where you can relive Anne’s adventures. The following morning we woke up to a rather grey and rainy day, but that wasn’t going to keep us from exploring the island. We hopped in the car and drove to Greenwich Beach, which had been recommended to us by a local. We drove to a nearby town where Togo got to enjoy some playtime on the beach, and after he had his fill of splashing around and fetching the stick, we got back in the car. At this point, the rain was really starting to pick up, so we returned back to the farmhouse. The next morning we drove to nearby Borden-Carleton, a town located right at the foot of the Confederation Bridge. Every tourist who drives to PEI passes through here, plus the town has a few tourist attractions like a lighthouse, a boxcar, and some fun photo ops. And have I mentioned that you get the best views of the Confederation Bridge? Because you do! That evening we had a very special guest. Sam’s uncle, Hans Anderegg, is a Swiss chef who lives on the island and teaches at the Culinary Institute of Canada. He kindly prepared us a seafood feast featuring oysters, scallops, fish and lobster. It was mouthwateringly delicious! *** This is part of our Travel in Canada video series showcasing Canadian food, Canadian culture and Canadian cuisine. * * * Music We Use: Artlist

Where on Earth did life begin? Explore the hydrothermal vents in Earth’s crust as simple compounds gave way to complex life. -- Billions of years ago, simple organic compounds assembled into more complex coalitions that could grow and reproduce. At the time, Earth had widespread volcanic activity and a hostile atmosphere that made it almost devoid of a suitable environment for living things. So where did life begin? If you have ants in your pants, that normally means you can’t sit still and have too much energy. Or it might mean you actually do have ants in your pants, and that’s highly creepy. When ants start an invasion of your home and yard, you gotta be prepared to fight them off. If you aren’t a huge fan of chemical pesticides (they can be harmful to humans) – there are natural ways to get rid of those annoying insects and keep them out for good. Some pest repellents that you can find right in your kitchen cabinet or garden! Did you know, for example, that сinnamon can work as a double agent here? It makes your house smell like a dream and helps you defer ants at the same time. Another affordable thing ants totally hate is vinegar. You can spray it onto the ants, around the windowsills, doorways, and places that ants love. And, there’ll be no scent left behind after it dries! Other videos you might like: If You Get This Plant at Home, You’ll Never See Mice, Spiders, or Ants Again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdJnRxYjOmI 10 Natural Ways to Get Rid of Ants And Bugs In Your House https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naRwoyeZ3KA& 10 Bug Bites You Should Be Able to Identify https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cN_uzGCaR0U& TIMESTAMPS: Citrus fruits 0:33 Cucumber slices 1:09 Peppermint 1:48 Cinnamon 2:12 Coffee grounds 2:51 Tansy 3:23 Diatomaceous earth 3:45 Chalk 4:19 Baking soda and powdered sugar 4:37 Cornmeal 5:12 Vinegar 5:34 Borax, water and sugar 6:01 Boiling water and dish soap 6:48 Mini moat 7:10 #ants #cleanhome #brightside SUMMARY: - You might love the smell of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit, but ants just can’t stand it! Use this knowledge to your advantage. - Similar to citrus fruits, cucumbers smell like trouble to ants. Apparently, there’s something in their chemical composition that eliminates the fungi that ants love a lot. - If you have ants in your kitchen and bathroom, you can repel them using peppermint essential oil. Sprinkle cotton balls with a few drops and leave them in areas where the ants hang out. - If you mix cinnamon oil with water in a spray bottle and sprinkle it on ant trails, windows, doors and cracks, it’ll have an even stronger effect. - Before you throw away used coffee grounds after you enjoy a hot cup, remember they can, in fact, be of good use to you. Put them right in the cracks, sprinkle them around the flower bed, or even the entire base of your house. - Tansy flowers might look cute to you but not to the ants! Plant it near your front door, under full or indirect sun and in pretty dry soil, or among other plants you want to protect from ants. - Food grade diatomaceous earth is a fine silica powder of fossilized algae. It’s perfectly safe for humans, but dangerous for insects. - No ant shall pass a border made of chalk, since they can’t walk across powdery materials. - Ants love sugar but can’t stand baking soda. The smell of sugar will attract them, and baking soda will say “hi” to their digestive system, and the results are pretty dramatic for them. - Cornmeal isn’t the quickest way to ruin an ant colony, but it’s completely harmless to humans and super cheap, so you might want to give it a go. - Make a thin paste of powdered Borax laundry booster, sugar and water in equal parts. Put a few tablespoons of it on a jar lid and set the bait. This solution attracts all possible kinds of ants with its sugary smell. - Another ant secret they don’t want you to know is that they just hate hot water. Yes, something as simple as that makes them tremble with fear. - Most ants just go for the food, but some love plants, both potted and planted ones. To prevent them from building a home in what’s adding aesthetics to your own home, try setting up a moat filled with water, much like people did in ancient times building fortresses. Body Suspension. Just a quick warning that this extreme form of body piercing isn’t for everyone. This video has been edited to remove most of the most graphic scenes. If you’d like to see the full uncut version it will be available on my Patreon (www.patreon.com/fearlessandfar) very shortly. If you understand the disclaimer, and are ready to learn a bit more about human suspension, and why I would ever want to try it. Let’s continue. Each year I try and do something a little bit different for my birthday. I try and challenge myself. I try to explore beyond my boundaries. In past years I’ve gone bungee jumping, free diving, skydiving, lived solo in the woods, and this year. Body Suspension. The art of Hanging by Hooks. I thought I would make a short documentary about it. Piercing your body is painful, relying on your skin to support your body weight is even more painful, but that’s part of the process. It’s been called cathartic, life changing, and unexplainable. To the viewer, it’s shocking, to the practitioner, cathartic. While it might seem like a new trend, it’s been around for 5000 years. Shaivite Hindus used to tread the line of body and spirit through body suspension to pay penance to their god Shiva. Variations of this still happen today in various parts of the world. Thousands of years later in what is now known as North Dakota the North American Mandan Tribe would ritualistically hang themselves by hooks as a right of passage. It was how men became boys. Two alternate cultures independently birthed this wild tradition without contact with each other. We’re doing it again today. You see it at tattoo conventions, and street performances. It makes me think there might be a bit more to it. It’s my birthday, and I like to challenge myself on my birthday. You can learn more about CuriosityStream at https://curiositystream.com/crashcourse. Today, we re going to combine the artificial neuron we created last week into an artificial neural network. Artificial neural networks are better than other methods for more complicated tasks like image recognition, and the key to their success is their hidden layers. We ll talk about how the math of these networks work and how using many hidden layers allows us to do deep learning. Neural networks are really powerful at finding patterns in data which is why they ve become one of the most dominant machine learning technologies used today. Crash Course is on Patreon! (and made by Jasper Palfree & the MinuteEarth/MinutePhysics team) The MinutePhysics video about Why December Has the Longest Days: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZMMuv0Ltyo This video is about the length of a solar day vs a stellar day vs a mean standard day, what they all have to do with each other and the earth s orbit, eccentricity, axial tilt, and so on. In this video, we continue our road trip through the Canadian Maritimes, this time visiting Cape Breton, a large island in Nova Scotia that is separated from the mainland by the Strait of Canso. During our visit, we stayed in a converted barn, hiked the trails of the Cape Breton Highlands, and drove around 300 kilometres on the world-famous Cabot Trail that borders the island. Our first day kicked off early with a drive up to Cape Breton Highlands National Park. We spent 2 days hiking the various trails and searching for the elusive moose. The funniest moment of that hike: there were signs with bear warnings throughout the park so I think that was on the back of everyone’s mind, and of course Togo was walking upfront because he insists on leading the pack. Well, there was a group of hikers coming from the opposite direction and when Togo was the first one to round the bend all by his lonesome self, the hikers saw his black furry face and thought he was a bear! Poor Togo looked really confused - he just wanted to greet the group of hikers. Of course, no trip to Cape Breton would have been complete without driving the world-famous Cabot Trail, which is named after John Cabot, or Giovanni Caboto, an Italian navigator and explorer, who was one of the first Europeans of modern times to reach North America in 1497. Cabot had been denied support for his expedition in Spain and Portugal, so he went to England, where he received financial support from Henry the Seventh. Cabot s plan was to reach Asia by sailing west along the North Atlantic and he estimated that this route could be shorter and faster than the one recently discovered by Columbus. The exact location of his arrival in North America is unknown, but today the route that borders Cape Breton is named after him. During our trip to Cape Breton, we also visited the Alexander Graham Bell Historic Site in Baddeck. Alexander Graham Bell is best known as the inventor of the telephone, but he also invented the photophone, the metal detector, the hydrofoil, and he designed the Silver Dart which made the first aircraft flight in Canada. Perhaps more interesting is that apart from all these great inventions, Bell devoted most of his life to teaching the deaf, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. We really enjoyed this museum and would highly recommend it if you’re in the area. That s a little taste of our trip to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia! We hope you enjoyed this video and we ll see you in the next episode where we continue our road trip through the Canadian Maritimes. Ah, it s summertime! So you probably have some delicious fruit in your kitchen: peaches, strawberries, oranges... But you know how it goes – you bought more bananas than you could eat up in time, so, it’s time to talk about fruit flies. Yup, you re not alone in your love of fruits! Bugs are not what you want to find in your house. And fruit flies are especially annoying because it doesn t take long for them to take over your kitchen. Luckily, there are several easy ways to get rid of those pesky critters. So here are some tips on how you can keep them out of your sweet summer treats for good! Fruit flies go after anything sugary. - Now, roll a piece of paper to create a funnel shape, and tape it so that it keeps its form. - Stick the narrow end through the top of your base container so that the funnel is resting in the opening. - Finally, set your fruit fly trap near the infested area – perhaps near your fruit bowl, garbage, or sink. - There s a similar method but with a little less crafting. All you need do is put ripe or rotten fruit in the bottom of a medium or large bowl. - Throw in a sweet liquid as well, maybe soda or syrup. - Cover the bowl as tightly as possible with plastic or Saran wrap. Grab a fork and poke holes around the top of the wrap. - This is the same idea as the funnel method – we’re luring the fruit flies to a bait that they can get to while making it harder for them to escape. - Take 2 medium-sized jars and fill them with fruit rinds and peels. Cover the mouths of your jars with clear stretchy plastic wrap. - Poke a small hole, perhaps with a toothpick, in the middle of the dents; this is where the fruit flies will enter the trap. - When you notice fruit flies in one jar, put it in the freezer. This will freeze the flies and their eggs! - The one sure-fire way to prevent fruit flies in the first place is to store your fruit properly. - Once the fruit is ripe, it’ll last much longer when refrigerated. - Even if your bananas are black on the outside, still try refrigerating them – this may save the tasty inside. - Citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruit stop ripening after they’re picked, so these can stay in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.
