In August 2018, a UK woman was sailing on the Adriatic Sea. Seems like nothing out of the ordinary, just the perfect summer vacation out on the open water! The Norwegian Star cruise liner was heading to Venice, Italy after departing from Vargarola, Croatia. The woman was on the 7th deck, when, right before midnight, she fell off the back of the ship! It happened about 60 miles off the coast of a city called Pula. Too far away to call for help… As soon as the crew found out about the incident, they launched a major search-and-rescue. They checked onboard CCTV cameras to find out exactly when the fall happened. That way, they could pinpoint the ship’s precise location at that time. The liner also contacted the authorities, and they dispatched a patrol ship, a plane, and 2 rescue boats to look for the woman. The sun came up, and she was still nowhere to be found. But then, at about 9:30 a.m., they saw a figure off in the distance. - When the rescue boat finally got to her, it was clear that the woman was exhausted, cold, and in slight shock. - They found her about 1 mile from where she’d fallen. The rescue team took her straight to the hospital. - In one of her interviews, she explained that she tried to stay calm and sang throughout the night to keep herself warm. She was also a pretty fit person, so she was able to keep herself afloat. - The Cruise Lines International Association says that this kind of thing happens only about once for every 1.3 million passengers. - The emergency crew members are getting together to find where the person fell. They throw life preservers overboard to make sure the individual has a flotation device while they wait for rescue. - If the crew knows about the incident from the get-go and the ship hasn’t covered much distance in that time, then they’ll release the lifeboats at once. - If nobody sees the person fall in and they only notice them missing later on, then the chances of successful rescue are not good – only about 10 to 15%. - If you fall from a considerable height, you risk fracturing bones when hitting the water. - The temperature of the water can be a deciding factor as well. When someone falls into cold waters, they automatically go into a Cold Shock Response. - When the water’s around 40°F, a person only has 60 minutes before their body just gets too cold. If it’s 50, that time doubles. - Modern cruise ships are the safest they’ve ever been, and they have plenty of ways to keep this from happening in the first place. - Fill your lungs with air and lie on your back with your arms and legs spread out. Move them slowly to stay afloat. This position also helps rescuers spot you more easily. - Being in the middle of an ocean, you’re prone to sunburn and heatstroke. So, keep your clothes on – they’ll protect you. - You’ll get thirsty, for sure. But the high concentration of salt in ocean water is toxic to humans. - The rescue team will start looking for you in the spot where you fell. Don’t leave that place! - Easier said than done, but you MUST conserve your energy. Panic does the opposite – it wears you out faster and clouds your thinking. Peninsula Valdes was our first introduction to Patagonia and what a way to begin! While on the Atlantic side of Chubut we visited Puerto Madryn, Peninsula Valdes, Trelew, Gaiman and Dolavon. To summarize our time in this area, we had incredibly close encounters with wildlife including penguins, sea lions and guanacos while also experiencing Welsh culture in Argentina. Our time in Patagonia continued as we headed from east to west trading more barren landscapes for thick forests, impressive mountains and magnificent lakes. We spent significant time in both Esquel and El Bolson with day trips to visit Trevelin, Parque Nacional Los Alerces, Cholila and Lago Puelo. Highlights included sailing, hiking, riding vintage trains and partaking in the national asado festival. We finished visiting Patagonia with time spent in Villa La Angostura, San Martin De Los Andes and Bariloche where we enjoyed more stunning scenery and hiking. On our way back to Buenos Aires, we took the Tren Patagonia to Las Grutas before meeting up with Audrey s dad again. To finish off our trip in Argentina, we spent more time in the capital and later Mendoza where we got to experience wine tourism to its fullest extent. Overall, we had an amazing time travelling around Argentina having only scratched the surface of this vast and diverse country. Our travels across Argentina continue. In this video, we begin another long overnight bus journey from the city of Mar del Plata to Puerto Madryn, where we get our first taste of coastal Patagonia! In terms of bus rides in Argentina, this was our longest one yet leaving at 8PM and not arriving until the following day at 1PM. All in all a 17 hour trip with Don Otto which cost $64 per person. We kick off the travel vlog with a tour of our $45 apartment in Mar Del Plata. We honestly loved this place in terms of location, views, fast internet and comfort. Afterwards we hopped in a cab en route to Mar Del Plata bus terminal. For our big meal of the day we grabbed a milanesa napolitana and a slice of lemon pie to share at a cafe. We had a small snack box for dinner before watching a movie on the bus. It was comfortable on the bus but it was a really long journey which ended up extending to 18 or 19 hours. And you remember that you haven’t eaten anything since last night because you were too tired to make anything and just went to bed. The bright orange color astronauts wear to go out for launch is called International Orange, and it’s the same shade as the paint that coats Tokyo Tower in Japan, and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. However, once astronauts are in space, they swap orange for snow-white wear. So what gives with the different colors? Well, there are actually two main types of spacesuits. The first one is the Advanced Crew Escape Suit, aka the "orange suit," aka the "pumpkin suit." Astronauts wear this full-pressure suit during "lift-off". On top of that, the selection process takes around 18 months! - If an astronaut cries in space, tears don t flow down their face. Instead, they gather into thick blobs of liquid around their eyes because the water surface tension holds tears together. - Astronauts who forget to attach themselves to something when they sleep can easily float away and bump into a hard surface. - Astronauts see a sunrise and a sunset every 45 minutes, which totals 15-16 sunsets and sunrises each day. Do you wonder why flight attendants always give us the same instructions before take-off and landing? Some of them sound strange and seem to have no logic. Like, why do we need to open window shades or sit in darkness for flights at night? Pilots have their own window to look through, and they can’t even see if it’s dark or not in the passenger cabin. What gives? Take-off and landing are the most dangerous moments of the whole flight. Airplanes seldom crash in the air; the pilots can easily control the aircraft at a high altitude, or even in a turbulence zone. Most crashes actually occur when the plane is rising above the airport, or is touching back down on the runway. So all the instructions we follow have a good explanation. When the light around us rapidly changes from very bright to dark, it takes some time for us to get used to it. - The crew dims the light in the cabin on a nighttime flight so that the passengers’ eyes get used to the outside darkness. - Your eyes won’t need time to adjust to see the little floor lights that guide you to the exits. That’s why using your gadgets with a bright screen is also not allowed. - If everyone had gotten used to low light conditions before the accident happened, you d see about 1,000 times better, compared to if you were suddenly plunged into the darkness. - Passengers should stay in their seats with seat belts fastened, the back of their seats in a vertical position, and tray tables locked. - In case of an emergency, this position is also safer for you and the passenger behind you, since the risk of trauma to the head and neck is much lower this way. - Pilots say that passengers are curious; they re perfect for an extra set of eyes to see if something goes wrong out there. Usually passengers report stuff right away. - Plastic shades can also cause different injuries: in the case of a crash landing, the plastic can break into sharp pieces, which can cut your face, hands or other body parts. - The root of this instruction is in the past, when the navigational system wasn’t protected well enough from interference. - Most researches show that switched on electronic devices don’t influence modern navigation. So, in 2014, this rule was officially called off. - Some airlines still stick to it, though, mainly out of habit. It’s just a question of time before it’s no longer used anywhere.
