Today we are kicking off a trip that we’ve been wanting to do for a very long time: a road trip across the length of Vancouver Island! Sam grew up on the West Coast but moved away when he went to university, and I had never been there, so it was high time we both visited. To make things even more special, when our dads heard we were travelling to Vancouver Island, they both decided to come along, so we embarked on this road trip as a gang of 4! This is the first episode of our Vancouver Island road trip and it was mostly a travel day. We flew from Toronto to Vancouver to Victoria, and then picked up a rental car at the airport. We had to drive up to Mount Washington, which would act as our base for the first few days, but on the way up there we also stopped in the town of Chemainus, which is known for its many murals, and in Cathedral Grove, where we saw Douglas-fir trees that are over 800 years old! Our trip to Vancouver Island starts off with a flight from Toronto to Vancouver, followed by the shortest flight of our lives from Vancouver to Victoria. From Victoria, we head to our base of Mount Washington in the central part of the island, where highlights include spotting black bears, hiking in Mount Washington and visiting vineyards in Comox. Our journey then continues to Gold River, Sam s hometown, where we board the Uchuck III en route to Friendly Cove. We also go to nearby Campbell River where we walk along a beautiful fishing dock, tour a hatchery and come across a black bear, and hike in Elk Falls which was our favourite hike on this entire journey. Heading to northern Vancouver Island, we base ourselves in Port Alice and visit the nearby towns of Port McNeill, Port Hardy and Telegraph Cove. For separate day trips, we take the ferry to Malcolm Island where we visit the former Finnish Community of Sointula and take another ferry to Alert Bay where we have the opportunity to appreciate First Nations totem poles, artwork and museums. Our Vancouver Island road trip concludes with visits to Parksville, Nanaimo and Victoria. Overall, it was one of the best road trips we ve ever done focusing mostly on nature, outdoor adventure, wildlife spotting and visiting off-the-beaten-path villages and communities that have a lot to offer but aren t that well known. But they all share one quality: their engines seem excessively powerful, yet they still can’t seem to output the speed you would’ve expected from this kind of power. The reality is the exact opposite of the expectations: a big liner can cross the Atlantic Ocean in a week, but a cargo ship would have to spend more than two weeks to do the same thing. The same goes for the number of passengers – some ships can carry more than 5,000 passengers in one go! - So in general, ships are going slow just because they don’t need to go faster; their aim is set somewhere else completely. They sacrifice speed for better carrying capacity. - The engines of big ships are huge powerhouses taking up entire rooms and swallowing tons of fuel each day like it’s a snack. - When a plane flies, it needs to maintain enough speed to stay up in the air, and it needs to avoid clouds when possible. - Unfortunately, ships have no choice but to deal with the dense environment that often almost fully covers the ship’s hull. - Even something as fast as a bullet would slow down and finally stop after just 100ft through the water. This is why every ship needs more power to move at all. - A large ship is naturally submerged in the water with a part of its hull up to the waterline. If the ship is loaded with cargo, it’ll be submerged deeper than that. - All modern-day ships have a so-called bulbous bow – the thing that’s submerged in the water right under the nose of the ship. - This is why modern ships don’t produce waves around them anymore, and their speed is no longer so heavily affected by them. - WP-18 Special Forces Interceptor is a boat you’d expect to see in a sci-fi movie. But it’s real, and it’s literally cutting edge design is specially developed to cut through waves at the extremely high speed of 65 knots, or 74 mph. - A rush for top speeds was, and always will be, in people’s minds no matter what. We got an inside look at the United States Marine Corps’ intense 13-week basic training program. Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent five days at the Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina, where he observed different companies at various stages of training. Recruits endure a series of intense physical challenges such as entering a gas chamber, rappelling down a 47-foot-tower, and fighting each other with “pugil sticks.” The Marine Corps is the only US military branch that separates male and female recruits during basic training. In a statement to Business Insider, a spokesperson from the Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot at Parris Island said, “The same gender platoon model allows for appropriate acclimation to the training environment, development of key relationships with drill instructors, and optimal focus during the beginning of their transformation.” After weeks of extreme physical and psychological challenges, training culminates with “The Crucible,” a 54-hour event where recruits endure exhausting combat scenarios while running on minimal food and sleep. In Piplantri, villagers celebrate the birth of their girls by planting 111 trees for each infant. The ritual began after Shyam Sunder Paliwal lost his teenage daughter, Kiran, and planted a tree in her honor. Today, he is leading the charge to ensure the girls of Piplantri are protected from harm and educated so they can grow up to be independent and self-sufficient. The trees are now becoming a source of beauty, sustenance and growth for the girls and the village as a whole.
