Join us as we continue our Vancouver Island road trip south to Victoria, BC with highlights including stopping in Nanaimo to try the famous Nanaimo bars (Canadian dessert) along with a stop in Duncan to see the world s biggest hockey stick! On a wet, rainy and windy morning we left our apartment in Comox with our first stop at Fanny Bay where I got a glimpse of crashing waves slamming against the shore. After more driving we stopped at Arbutus Grove Provincial Park to do a little hike and eat our picnic lunch. After making it to Nanaimo we had to stop and grab the classic dessert bar from a couple of different places. First we went to Smokin George s BBQ Restaurant to grab a nanaimo bar with bacon and dulce de leche. We then went into town and went inside Red s Bakery to grab a classic Nanaimo bar and another one with peanut butter. En route to Victoria we stopped in Duncan to take a photo beside the world s largest hockey stick. This has been in Duncan for quite some time because I remember growing up on Vancouver Island and marvelling at it in my youth. The 205-foot hockey stick was made from Douglas Fir wooden beams reinforced with steel and weighs an astonishing 28,118 kg. After arriving in Victoria we cooked up a quick dinner and ate the remaining Nanaimo bars. Overall, it was one of the best road trips we ve ever done focusing mostly on nature, outdoor adventure, wildlife spotting and visiting off-the-beaten-path villages and communities that have a lot to offer but aren t that well known. According to Professor David Sinclair, it is a loss of information in our epigenome, the system of proteins like histones and chemical markers like methylation that turn on and off genes. Epigenetics allow different cell types to perform their specific functions - they are what differentiate a brain cell from a skin cell. Our DNA is constantly getting broken, by cosmic rays, UV radiation, free radicals, x-rays and regular cell division etc. When our cells repair that damage, the epigenome is not perfectly reset. And hence over time, noise accumulates in our epigenome. Our cells no longer perform their functions well. To counter this decline, we can activate the body s own defenses against aging by stressing the body. Eat less, eat less protein, engage in intense exercise, experience uncomfortable cold. When the body senses existential threats it triggers longevity genes, which attempt to maintain the body to ensure its survival until good times return. This may be the evolutionary legacy of early bacteria, which established these two modes of living (repair and protect vs grow and reproduce). Scientists are uncovering ways to mimic stresses on the body without the discomfort of fasting. Molecules like NMN also trigger sirtuins to monitor and repair the epigenome. This may slow aging. Reversing aging requires an epigenetic reset, which may be possible using Yamanaka factors. These four factors can revert an adult cell into a pluripotent stem cell. Prof. Sinclair used three of the four factors to reverse aging in the retinal cells of old mice. He found they could see again after the treatment. Come join us for another exciting travel day on Vancouver Island as we head north to Campbell River, BC to enjoy visiting the town before going hiking at Elk Falls. After our stop at Miracle Beach, we hopped back in the car and continued our drive up to Campbell River, British Columbia. After a week of spotting black bears left, right and centre, we had a funny little incident where we thought a dog was one. Once we got into town, we checked out some of the murals and browsed through antiques at the Trading Post, before heading down to the pier. The Discovery Pier is Canada’s first saltwater fishing pier, so it’s a little piece of history. It looks out over the Discovery Passage and it’s a popular fishing spot. The pier stretches out 600 ft and is equipped with rod holders, bait stands, and fish cleaning tables. You can even rent fishing rods if you’re there between May and October. That afternoon we continued to the Quinsam River Hatchery, because, have I already mentioned that Campbell River is the Salmon Capital of the World?! The hatchery has a visitor center with information about the hatchery program and the salmon life cycle, but really, I think most of us were there for a chance to spot a black bear fishing. You can see pink adults in September, and chinook and coho adults in October and November. It’s open to visitors seven days a week from 8:00am to 3:30pm, and well worth the visit if you’re already in the area. From there, it was onwards to nearby Elk Falls. One of the main draws to Elk Falls is the 25-metre waterfall that gives the park its name. There is a suspension bridge for those willing to brave the heights, as well as viewing decks. And that’s pretty much a wrap for our day exploring Campbell River, BC and the surrounding area. You probably aren’t the only one looking to pull the ol’ switcharoo. Even if just a few passengers do it, they could throw the plane off balance! And since most aircraft are incredibly sensitive to changes in their center of gravity, it can lead to dramatic consequences. During takeoff, pilots must know the distribution of weight on the plane to make exact calculations. If these calculations are off even the slightest, there are chances that the aircraft can crash while leaving the ground. Ashgabat Turkmenistan is a strange place. I have never seen so much gold and marble in my life, but the streets seemed empty. In this Turkmenistan travel vlog, I join my friend Lexie Alford and make a trip to a local Turkmen market called the Russian Bazaar. Here, we tried street food, interacted with the locals, and witnessed some real culture. I say real culture, because Turkmenistan is known as the North Korea of Central Asia. The president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow has a tight grip on the country, and it s very hard to get off the normal tourist path. Beside our hotel was a local market, we asked our guide if we could visit, and he said if we really wanted to we could, but not to bring a camera because of police. The locals had been so nice to us, so thought we would take a small chance. One more thing to note. After I posted the first Turkmenistan travel vlog in Ashgabat, I had said that we had our US dollars exchanged to Turkmen Manat at 1 to 13. Locals commented that it s actually suppose to be 1 to 20. It s funny though, from an atm it s 1 to 3.5. Very happy we got our money on the black market.
