The longest-living person was a woman who made it 122 years and 164 days. Which isn’t bad for a species with an average lifespan of 72 years. There was also a cat that set the record for the feline community by living to 38 years. Yet dogs aren’t so lucky, which means we humans, who’ve dubbed these loveable creatures as our best friends, really feel the sting. A 13-year-old person has their whole life ahead of them, yet a 13-year-old dog is considered a senior at that age! While we humans take up to 18 years to stop growing and developing, a dog is usually full-grown at 18 months! Like a lot of strange things your dog does, it’s ancient instincts controlling their brain. - And that circling ritualistic thing they do before they lie down? The door to hell. The gates of hell. Darvaza Gas Crater. Derweze. These are all names for the main attraction in Turkmenistan, and in this travel vlog, we take this adventure to a whole new level. Turkmenistan is built on methane. I mean this literally and figuratively. In the vast arid deserts of the country lie the 4th largest natural gas deposits in the world, and this is the cash cow that makes the capital Ashgabat, sparkle with gold and marble. The Darvaza Crater was a mining disaster. So they think. No one really knows, as I don’t believe there were any survivors. In 1971 a soviet mining operation punctured the eggshell surface of a potential gas deposit in the middle of the Karakum desert, and fell into a pit. Years later, someone lit a match, and Bang! Welcome to the door to hell. Put this location on your bucket list for 2020. It s worth the three hour drive north from Ashgabat. The new president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has opened up the country much more than it used to be. The biggest question has to be: Why are they always white? Wouldn’t that encourage stains? Why can’t they be black or some other dark color that would hide any graffiti more discreetly? Well, actually, commodes haven’t always been white…or porcelain! Go back to the Middle Ages. In Europe, commoners had to use chamber pots — yes, for both numbers! The chamber pots would have to be emptied, so people just dumped them out their windows into the streets! - They had no idea about the danger of bacteria and how it spreads to cause illnesses. - In the 1800s, people finally began to understand this better and realized that there was a serious need to improve sanitary conditions. - It turns out that other parts of the world had the sanitary toilet thing down way earlier, but the luxury of a toilet was only for royalty to enjoy. - The first patent for a flushing toilet went to a guy named Alexander Cummings in 1775, and then the real work—and cleanup— began. - The first and simplest reason why toilets are white is because porcelain is white, and 95% of toilets are made from the stuff. - Currently, the average toilet manufactured today uses about 1.5 gallons per flush. - Plain white has come to symbolize cleanliness and sterilization. It’s supposed to make us feel clean in the bathroom! - Add up all that time, and the result is that we end up spending 92 DAYS on the toilet in our lifetime! - A company out of Australia started selling TPc made from 22K gold in 2013. And yes, the price tag is hefty—a jumbo roll will cost you about $1.4 million! - Located in New Delhi, The Sulabh International Museum of Toilets has amazing artifacts and pictures that let you take a walk through the evolution of the toilet, going back 4,500 years! - Colin Furze of the UK built the world’s fastest toilet in May of 2013. It reached a speed of 53 mph, setting a Guinness World Record! - In September of 2007, Kevin Shelley broke 46 wooden toilet seats over his head in one minute. - The White House is famous for the number of beautiful rooms and fireplaces, but now you’ll know that among those are 35 bathrooms and toilets! - Statistics show that before a child is fully potty-trained and can use the toilet all by themselves, parents will change about 10,000 diapers! If you ve ever tried scuba-diving, you know that at some point during the descent, you’ll experience some unpleasant sensations. Your ears might pop, and you re likely to feel some serious pressure. Luckily, it s usually nothing serious if you do everything correctly. But what would happen to you at the bottom of the Mariana Trench? So, if you want to get to the very deepest point of the ocean, you need to travel to the southern part of the Mariana Trench. There, you ll find the Challenger Deep, a small valley at a dizzying depth of 36,037 ft! It s so deep that if you put Mount Everest into the Challenger Deep, there would still be around 1.2 miles between the mountain s peak and the surface. That s because you re leaving the sunlight zone of the ocean and going deeper - to the twilight zone, which starts at a depth of 660 ft. - You reach the mark of 1,090 feet beneath the surface, and that s the deepest a scuba diver has ever reached. - The option will be to give up your diving idea and get inside a special submarine constructed for deep-dives! - It’ll take you about two and a half hours to reach your destination. - At a depth of 3,280 ft, your journey becomes quite boring and monotonous as you enter the midnight zone. - Outside your submarine, the pressure is simply astonishing: it s more than 1,000 times higher than the standard atmospheric pressure you experience at sea level! - If your submarine wasn t so sturdy, at the bottom of the Challenger Deep, it’d be instantly flattened to the thickness of an aluminum foil sheet. - The temperature around your submarine is close to freezing - from 34 to 39 degrees F. - The Challenger Deep is the home to more than 200 microorganisms that lead a comfortable life holed up in the cozy mud at the bottom. - Even though the Challenger Deep is the deepest point of the ocean, it s not the closest to the center of the Earth! - The Mariana Trench is one of the oldest sea beds on Earth! Researchers claim that it may be up to 180 million years old! - At the bottom of the trench, there are hydrothermal vents that emit super-acidic fluids. - The bottom of the trench is covered with icky grayish-yellow sludge which is almost silky to the touch. It s the remains of everything that ends up at the bottom after being crushed by the water pressure. Airplanes are mysterious things: unimaginably heavy metal giants soaring through the sky, jam-packed not only with people but also all kinds of electronic gizmos. But look at the airplane s tires compared to the plane’s body – they re tiny! How can they withstand all that weight and speed? Let s check out what s happening when a plane is preparing to land on the runway. All 300 tons of your airplane touch the ground while still going 170 mph. Imagine your typical 2-story house, fully furnished, dropping to the ground as fast as a flying arrow - that must be quite the impact! It makes aircraft tires so strong that each of them can easily deal with a 38-ton load. - The gas that fills aircraft tires is nitrogen. It doesn t react with rubber, which makes it a much safer choice for airplanes. - The pressure in plane tires is 6 times bigger than the pressure in your car tires. It s 200 psi, and that s what you’d feel if you took a dive 450 ft underwater. - There can be plenty of wheels on large airplanes, like an Airbus A380 or Boeing 747. And if one of the tires fails, the plane will still land safely. - When a plane touches the ground, its tires aren t rolling at first - they re just skidding. In other words, the plane is dragging them along the runway until it slows down enough for the wheels to be able to rotate. - Larger tires would be pointless since they wouldn t make landing more effective or safer. - After plane tires are produced, they always get tested. Manufacturers create computer simulations that check how tires will behave if they re pushed past their speed limit or get overloaded. - And still, airplane tires aren t entirely safe from bursting. Accidents did happen in the past, and planes did skid off runways because of one of the tires exploding mid-landing. - Hydroplaning is a situation that occurs when the runway is covered with a layer of water preventing a landing plane from braking and stopping in time. - The aircraft just keeps skidding forward, unable to find traction. - That’s why some airports have grooves on the runway. Water flows into these grooves, making the surface not so slippery and dropping the chances of hydroplaning. Josh Simpson makes glass planets and simply put, they are out of this world. The artist crafts the intricate globes in his workshop in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. He started making them back in the 1970s, inspired after hearing the Apollo astronauts describe the Earth as a blue marble. Simpson has thousands of the planets hidden all over the world, left as gifts for passersby or perhaps someone in the future to wonder where they came from.
