Today, we’re taking you on another day trip here in Patagonia, this time to visit the town of Trevelin. If you’ve been following along, then you probably know we stumbled upon a series of Welsh towns in Argentina and we couldn’t resist visiting them. Dragons and afternoon tea may have been part of the draw, but we were also very curious to learn what life was like for the first Welsh settlers who arrived in these lands. So today, we’re introducing you to yet another Welsh town. This is Trevelin which translates to ‘mill town’. First things first, we visited a Welsh tea house, because hello, we love food! Thankfully this place does serve afternoon tea in the middle of the morning, so that worked out well. We then walked along the Percy River, walked around the town where the streets are lined with rose bushes, and we also visited the Andean Mill Museum, which showcases objects that were part of daily life for the Welsh settlers of Patagonia. You’ll see furniture, home decorations, musical instruments, clothes, random household items, and even farming equipment. We then grabbed a late lunch at Los Troncos, which specializes in Argentine BBQ, and because that apparently wasn t enough food, we ended up in Trevelin s artisanal market where they had homemade cakes! We couldn t resist getting a slice of the walnut cake with dulce de leche. It was amazing! The day really turned into a bit of a foodie tour. That was our day trip to Trevelin from Esquel. Super easy and worth the journey. We spent significant time in both Esquel and El Bolson with day trips to visit Trevelin, Parque Nacional Los Alerces, Cholila and Lago Puelo. Highlights included sailing, hiking, riding vintage trains and partaking in the national asado festival. We finished visiting Patagonia with time spent in Villa La Angostura, San Martin De Los Andes and Bariloche where we enjoyed more stunning scenery and hiking. On our way back to Buenos Aires, we took the Tren Patagonia to Las Grutas before meeting up with Audrey s dad again. To finish off our trip in Argentina, we spent more time in the capital and later Mendoza where we got to experience wine tourism to its fullest extent. Overall, we had an amazing time travelling around Argentina having only scratched the surface of this vast and diverse country. In our latest travel video from Argentina we visit possibly the most beautiful places in Patagonia, Los Alerces National Park, on a day trip from Esquel, Chubut. Today we visit Los Alerces National Park where we encounter trees that are over 2600 years old! We were visiting Esquel during low season, so there was only one daily bus with Transportes Esquel leavening in the early morning and returning in the evening. We made sure to arrive at the bus terminal 1 hour ahead of departure to make sure we could get seats on the bus since you can’t reserve tickets ahead of time and once they’re gone, they’re gone. One of the coolest parts of the boat ride was seeing the Torrecillas Glacier. If you’re up for a serious trek, there are excursions in Los Alerces National Park that take you right to the foot of the glacier. After cruising on the north end of Lake Menendez, we reached the Alerzal Milenario, where we disembarked and continued the rest of the excursion on foot. The trees that we had come to see are the ‘Alerces patagónicos’ also known as lahuán. This is a type of tree that can be found in the Valdivian temperate rain forest below the higher elevations of the Andes in both Argentina and Chile. These trees can grow from sea level up to 1,500 (fifteen hundred) meters above sea level, and though they are slow-growth trees, they can reach heights of above 50 meters. And that was our excursion to Los Alerces National Park in search of two-thousand-year-old trees! We ve finally made it to Siberia on the Trans-Siberian Railway! Our first adventure was arriving in Ulan-Ude, near Lake Baikal, and driving hundreds of kilometres into the wilderness to meet a remote Siberian tribe in Buryatia, Russia. Buryatia is one of Russia s most unique republics. It has a mongol heritage, and the people who live here are descendants of the Golden Horde. The landscape is called The Steppe, a vast sweeping grassland that covers central Asia. Tribes who live here have traditionally been nomadic, making small camps like the one we stay in. This is our documentary of 24 hours with this tribe. This experience put us outside our comfort zones. We ate some interesting Russian food like raw sheep liver, rode horses, wrestled, and had the time of our lives. While this experience isn t for everyone, it s definitely for me. This was one of my favourite days on the Trans-Siberian Railway. The people we met in this small village made it especially memorable. You can tell by their faces, that they are kind and generous. All aboard the OLD PATAGONIAN EXPRESS! Today we take you one of the most epic train journeys in the world, made even more famous by Paul Theroux s 1979 account "The Old Patagonian Express", where he sought to ride trains all the way from his hometown in Massachusetts all the way down to Argentina. Today, the Old Patagonian Express may only be a fraction of what it once was, but it’s an exciting journey nevertheless, and we knew we had to ride it! This tourist steam train may cover only a short distance, but it’s a fun way to experience the nostalgia of early 20th-century train travel and it also allows you to soak in the magical landscapes of the Patagonian steppe. To give you a bit more information, in Spanish, this steam train is known as La Trochita; this translates to ‘little gauge’ and it’s a nickname that refers to the train’s super narrow gauge of only 75 centimetres! The Old Patagonian Express is a railway line was originally planned as part of a larger network that would connect all of Patagonia, however, the project was never completed due to ministerial changes and then the start of the First World War, which also affected Argentina’s economy. Today the Old Patagonian Express operates on alternating locomotives; one is a Baldwin from the United States and the other a Henschel from Germany. The wooden wagons came from Belgium, and the heaters, well those were later installed in Argentina to make the journeys across Patagonia in winter a little more bearable. You can take this journey from a few different stations. This one here is the journey from Esquel to Nahuel Pan. When you arrive in Nahuel Pan, you have 45 minutes to visit the artisanal fair, a small museum, and also buy food for a quick lunch. We went for the choripan (chorizo in a bun), alfajores and torta frita. Overall, we really enjoyed riding aboard the Old Patagonian Express. And donkey carts and covered wagons had wooden wheels—sometimes painted! -Axles need to be strong and you don’t make anyone nervous by implying that your axle is anything other than steel. -Some tires have white walls—where the natural rubber color is left alone, or even brightened up, with zinc oxide. -Older cars were often two toned. Colorful cars bloomed all through the 1920’s but light and bright colors made the paint even more expensive. When the stock market crashed, people went back to durable colors. -Tires do have a lot of safety features: no-slip tread prevents skidding, snow-tires prevent sledding, and run-flat tires let you drive to repair shop after you drive over a spike. -In the 1950’s Goodyear developed tires in many shades to match your car. But they got dirty really quickly and cost a lot. -The world’s biggest tire started life as Ferris Wheel at the New York World’s Fair in 1964. Today, it sits on the side of Highway I-94. -Lego makes tires with diameters just over a ½ inch and they produce about 318 million tires a year!
