Today we re taking you on an off-grid cabin getaway in Ontario, Canada. After spending the past 3+ months in self-isolation, we are finally venturing out again, this time staying close to home and getting to know our own backyard. Canada is home to insurmountable beauty, and over the coming months, we’re going to help you discover some unusual accommodations and fun nature escapes. Our first summer adventure was an off-grid cabin stay in Schomberg, Ontario where we spent a few days enjoying tiny house living close to nature. I found this tiny home cabin listed on AirBnB and it s located in Jecara Farms. The best part is that it s less than 1 hour from Toronto, which makes it the perfect weekend escape! In this video, we ll give you the full off-grid cabin tour, and let me tell you, the place is cute! We stayed in the Bear Cabin which comes with its own private pond, but they have three different cabins to choose from depending on the size of your group. This one right here is the one we stayed in: 🏡 https://bit.ly/3flnL0v 🏡 Because the cabins are completely off-grid, that means there is no WiFi (nor did I have phone signal). There is no actual kitchen, so all the cooking is done on the barbecue, and all the washing up is done using a 5-gallon water container. There is a compost toilet in the cabin (I promise it does not smell!), and while there is no sink or shower, there is a place to set up a camp shower bag. Everything in the cabins is powered by solar and wind energy. Some may say it s roughing it, but sometimes it s nice to go back to basics! We had a wonderful time staying in this off-grid cabin and we spent our time hiking, canoeing, roasting marshmallows around the fire, and reading books. It was such a wonderful getaway, especially after having spent the past few months in lockdown. We hope you enjoy this video and we ll see you soon with some more tiny homes and unique accommodations as we continue to explore close to home. If you have any suggestions of places you d like to see us explore here in Canada, let us know in the comments below. We ll be focusing on Ontario for now, but will start branching off to nearby provinces as things slowly begin to open up again. Happy travels! Designer Emily Griffin takes you inside her barn on her family s Balsam Lake property in the Kawarthas region. Adjacent to the designer s 1970s Pan-Abode cottage inherited by her parents, the 1,600-square-foot barn-dorm is the ultimate hangout for teenagers and adults alike. You ll love the vintage pool table, distinct Canadiana style (think: antique ski and snowshoes hanging on the wall) and repurposed staircase from Emily s grandparents house. Plus, the upstairs loft can easily sleep up to 10 people, which is perfect for all of the cousins to hangout in and stay up late. The homeowners want to turn the area into more usable space, so Mark McCullough takes a jackhammer to the concrete floor so he can dig it out and create more headroom. Outside, the foundation has been poured and framing has begun. Norm teaches Erick and Carly how to lay the sill. Our Generation Next program highlights a program at Ft. Stewart in Georgia that is turning grunts into soldiers of the building trades. The town of Brookline requires our builder to inspect the old sewer line from the inside. Richard works with a plumbing company in the basement with a tool designed to video tape the pipe from the house to the street. The architect for our project has refreshed the modern box design of the exterior, made popular in the 50s. Now our homeowners are focused on the interior space where they want to ramp up that modern feel. Kevin finds Sunil meeting with interior designers who are starting the process. Dive into four different voting systems: plurality, instant runoff, tactical, and the Condorcet method, and find out which is fairest. -- Imagine we want to build a new space port at one of four recently settled Martian bases, and are holding a vote to choose its location. Of the 100 colonists on Mars, 42 live on West Base, 26 on North Base, 15 on South Base, and 17 on East Base. Assuming that everyone wants the port to be closest to their home base, what is the fairest way to conduct the vote? Alex Gendler digs into voting systems. Everyone loves laminar flow but turbulent flow is the real MVP. A portion of this video was sponsored by Cottonelle. Purchase Cottonelle Flushable Wipes and try them for yourself: https://bit.ly/2WJm9Hq Special thanks to: Prof. Beverley McKeon and team https://www.mckeon.caltech.edu Destin from Smarter Every Day https://www.youtube.com/smartereveryday Nicole Sharp from FYFD https://ve42.co/fyfd Pavol Dobryakov turbulent simulations: https://paveldogreat.github.io/WebGL-Fluid-Simulation/ I got into turbulent flow via chaos. The transition to turbulence sometimes involves a period doubling. Turbulence itself is chaotic motion, it is unpredictable and sensitively dependent on initial conditions. What surprised me is all the ways turbulent flow is useful to us. It is diffusive, meaning it causes mixing. This is useful in jet engines or rocket nozzles (which Destin studies) and is important to achieve in microfluidic devices, which are so small that turbulent flow is actually difficult to achieve. Turbulent flow can energize a boundary layer, which is important to maintain flow attachment over a wing, maintaining lift and delaying stall. Similarly a turbulent boundary layer over a golf ball reduces pressure drag allowing golf balls to fly further. This is the reason for the dimples on golf balls. Flow transitioning to turbulence in the wake of a bluff body can create periodic vortex shedding. This beautiful phenomenon can be seen in the von Kàrmàn vortex street in clouds viewed from space. Turbulence is everywhere, in the air currents in a room, in your aorta, in the breaths you exhale, in oil pipelines and water pipes, in the flow over cars and ships and planes. Animals have evolved for it (like dead fish swimming up stream) and we have engineered our environment, our planes and golf balls for it. Laminar flow may be nice to look at (which is why we use it in decorative fountains) but turbulent flow does the real lifting. Though we all long to have our feelings and needs acknowledged, it seems that nothing is more common than for these to be neglected by people around us. We take so little time to listen to one another and to show that we have absorbed what people have told us. As a result, everyone gets increasingly angry and - deep inside - sad. The answer is to make the art of listening a global priority. We want that – at key moments – our sufferings should be understood, our anxieties noticed and our sadness lent legitimacy. We don’t want others necessarily to agree with all our feelings, but what we crave is that they at least validate them. When we are furious, we want another person to say: I can see that you’ve been driven to distraction. It must feel very chaotic for you inside right now for you. When we are sad, we want someone to say: I know you’re unusually down and I understand the reasons why. To support your local station, go to: http://to.pbs.org/DonateOKAY ↓ More info and sources below ↓ The largest pterosaurs like Quetzalcoatlus were closer in size to airplanes than birds. No flying animal alive today comes close to their huge size. So did giant pterosaurs actually fly? I went to see the fossil bones of the largest pterosaur that ever lived so I could learn how these winged giants actually took to the skies. Check out all the places seen in this video: https://www.touropia.com/famous-lighthouses-in-the-world/ Set at the entrance to beautiful bays and natural harbors, lighthouses have prevented ships from running aground for hundreds of years. Sadly, however, many of them have become redundant and been replaced by more effective onboard navigational systems. The ones that remain are, for the most part, automated, and boast more powerful lights and lenses than the beacons used in the past. As they were designed to be visible, lighthouses often make for very distinctive landmarks: their shapes and colors stand out against the surrounding landscapes. Consequently, they make for some fantastic photo opportunities and are usually set in spectacular spots along rugged coastlines or overlooking wild seas.
Dig into the science of how ancestry DNA tests work, their accuracy, and why tracing ancestry is so complicated. -- Two sisters take the same DNA test. The results show that one sister is 10% French, the other 0%. Both sisters share the same two parents, and therefore the same set of ancestors. So how can one be 10% more French than the other? Tests like these rely on our DNA to answer questions about our ancestry, but DNA actually can’t tell us everything. Prosanta Chakrabarty explores the accuracy of DNA tests. Come join us for another Indian food adventure in India as we try Amritsari Punjabi Thali (ਥਾਲੀ) and visit Durgiana Mandir Temple (Silver Temple) during the final hours of our time in Amritsar, India. On our trip to India Amritsar was hands down one of our favourite destinations for regional Indian food. If you like rich buttery curries with copious amounts of ghee you ll love the local cuisine of Punjab. Subscribe to David s Been Here: https://www.youtube.com/user/Davidsbeenhere Subscribe to Deepak at Amritsar Walking Tours: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1nVUbcLU8P_cLDkzQdewOw For lunch we headed over to locally famous Bharawan Da Dhaba to sample its legendary veg thali. This local institution has been in business since 1912 and serves up what many consider to be the most authentic Amritsari Punjabi thali in all of Amritsar, Punjab. If you order the typical veg thali ( ਥਾਲੀ) you ll receive a generous platter containing makhani dal, chole, paneer, boondi raita, rice and buttery garlic naan. I ve never had a naan with such rich and buttery curries before. If you visit Amritsar this place is an absolute must. Prior to lunch, we visited Durgiana Mandir (known as the Silver Temple) which unlike the Golden Temple is a Hindu temple. To be honest, it is almost as impressive architecturally as the Golden Temple, but without the crowds, and in many other cities would be a standalone tourist attraction. Built in 1921 surrounding a sacred lake, it bares an uncanny resemblance to the Golden Temple. Upon entering you take off your shoes and ring a bell where you have an opportunity to leave an offering to Shiva. Having a chance to visit here right after the Golden Temple it was a completely different experience and certainly more tranquil. To finish things off we had a chai one last chai with Deepak, our guide from Amritsar Walking Tours. Deepak was a legend during our time in Amritsar showing us the best local places to eat and providing us so much background information about the cities, food and attractions we visited. If you re visiting Amritsar be sure to get in touch with him and watch his videos. Amritsari PUNJABI THALI + Visiting DURGIANA TEMPLE (Silver Temple) in Amritsar, India Hey guys, Sam here with the final video of my trip to Amritsar in Punjab, India. With a few hours to spare before travelling onwards to Bangalore, I made the most of my time in the city with a visit to Durgiana Temple, which is like a replica of the Golden Temple. Plus, I couldn’t leave without feasting on Amritsari Punjabi thali! Once again, I was joined by David from David s Been Here and Deepak from Amritsar Walking Tours. So let’s go and explore Amritsar together one last time! Durgiana Temple is one of the most important Hindu temples in all of Amritsar. It sometimes is referred to as the Silver Temple because of its silver doors where you can see the embossed images of Vishnu and other deities. However, despite the silver in its name, it often gets compared to the Golden Temple and it’s easy to see why. Just like the Golden Temple, Durgiana Temple sits in the middle of a lake and is accessible by a bridge. Plus, its central dome and outer walls are covered in gold, making it look like a miniature of the Golden Temple minus all the crowds. * * * * * * * * * * * * GEAR WE USE Panasonic GH5: http://amzn.to/2yqTUyi Canon G7X ii: http://amzn.to/2yqtM6B Rode Video Micro: http://amzn.to/2wTguTM Joby Gorilla Pod: http://amzn.to/1PgoY5F SanDisk 16GB Extreme Pro: http://amzn.to/25KEErs * * * * * * * * * * * * SOCIAL MEDIA & TRAVEL BLOGS AUDREY: blog: http://thatbackpacker.com/ instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thatbackpacker/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thatbackpacker twitter: https://twitter.com/ThatBackpacker SAMUEL: blog: http://nomadicsamuel.com/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nomadicsamuel twitter: https://twitter.com/NomadicSamuel instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadicsamuel/ * * * * * * * * * * * * Music We Use: http://bit.ly/SamAudreyMusic
