Dig into the ancient manuscripts, scrolls, and books of Timbuktu— and find out why they’ve been hidden for centuries. -- On the edge of the vast Sahara desert, citizens snuck out of the city of Timbuktu and took to the wilderness. They buried chests in the desert sand, hid them in caves, and sealed them in secret rooms. Inside these chests was a treasure more valuable than gold: the city’s ancient books. Why were they hiding these priceless manuscripts? Elizabeth Cox digs into the literary tradition of Timbuktu. Lesson by Elizabeth Cox, directed by AIM Creative Studios. What makes straightforward people gratifying to be around isn’t so much that their positions and intentions are always inherently unproblematic, it’s that we happen to know exactly what the issues are from the start. There is therefore no need to guess, infer, decode, untangle, unscramble or translate. There are no sudden surprises or revolutions in perspective. If these straightforward types don’t want to do something, they will, politely and in good time, explain that it’s really not for them. If they’re unhappy with our behaviour, they won’t smile sweetly while developing noxious stores of envy or hatred in the recesses of their minds; they will immediately provide a gentle but accurate statement of how we are frustrating them. If they are worried a project is going awry, they won’t pretend that all is well until a catastrophe can no longer be denied. If they are attracted to someone, they will find charming, kind and inoffensive ways of making their feelings clear. And in bed, they may want to please, but they can also be honest and unashamed about what actually excites them.” MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Watch more films on SELF in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLself You can submit translations and transcripts on all of our videos here: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?c=UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog&tab=2 Find out how more here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Noelle Smith Design http://www.noellesmithdesign.com/ Title animation produced in collaboration with Vale Productions https://www.valeproductions.co.uk/

According to experts, rapid fatigue and pain in muscles and joints is 75% caused by the wrong posture at the computer and only 25% by the failure to respect the balance between work and rest. Bad habits of poor posture are a common cause for lower and upper back pain. Let’s search how you can make sitting before the PC easier on the body. Don’t worry, mastering a good posture doesn’t have to take a lot of time. In fact, it’s often just about being aware of your posture and making sure you don’t slouch in a chair or hunch your back when looking at your phone. That would be easier to do if you buy a special office or gaming armchair. They have anatomical shape, and they can be adjusted to fit your frame perfectly. If you don’t feel like buying an expensive chair, at least get some lower back support. It can be a seat cushion or a chair back attachment that will hold your back in a natural position, so you won’t get up sore. Your eyes will get sore much less often if there’s no glare on the screen. Turn your monitor away from all sources of light, especially the sun. So, guys, if you sit on your laptop all day long, here are some really useful tips that can help you feel better. #brightside Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brightside/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brightgram/ 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: https://www.goo.gl/8JVmuC Stock materials (photos, footages and other): https://www.depositphotos.com https://www.shutterstock.com https://www.eastnews.ru ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/

Today Architectural Digest is welcomed downtown by Vanessa Carlton for a tour of her stylish and utilitarian SoHo loft. The one-time mercantile factory retains touches from it’s previous life, with stately brick walls and wooden columns framing rooms softened by deep couches and faux fur throws. Vanessa is passionate about preserving the planet and always seeks to repurpose items while decorating, like the reclaimed wood shelves in her living room or the old theater lights that hang above her kitchen island. And having recently released her sixth studio album “Love Is An Art,” it’s no surprise to find a pair of pianos ready and waiting for when inspiration strikes. Want even more AD? Unique ideas to help you tidy your home this fall. Today, I show you some quick cleaning ideas for your home and other organization hacks that will motivate you this season. If you’ve got slime stuck in your carpet, you can easily remove it with vinegar. First, try to get as much of the slime off your carpet and then pour the vinegar on top. After that, scoop the rest of the slime out with a spoon. When flowers are left in a vase with water for a long time, they leave some residue behind that gets stuck on the walls of the vase. A quick way to get rid of that is with a dispersible aspirin. Watch the video to see how. Wooden cutting boards need to be cleaned often. They usually absorb all sorts of stuff from the foods we cut, and cross-contamination becomes very likely. To stop that, sprinkle soda on your chopping board and rub it in with your hands (make sure you’re wearing gloves). Then, pour vinegar over it and keep rubbing. Finally, pour some hot water from your kettle, and you’re all set. House centipede has 15 pairs of legs, two well-developed eyes, and two long sensitive antennae to pick up smells and vibrations. It carries venom in the legs located by the head and near the mouth. And it can hold more than one prey in its legs using them like a lasso. A lot of people are trying to get rid of them, but house centipedes are natural and free pest control in your home! Wait, aren t house centipedes dangerous? Actually, some creatures look way scarier than they actually are. And yes, house centipede is one of them. But there are others. For example, the whale shark is the largest shark and fish in the world, slightly bigger than a double-decker bus and as heavy as five elephants. They have 300 tiny teeth in their mouth and they use those on plankton and the occasional fish. But whale sharks are slow swimmers and the kindest of all sharks. They even play with divers! So, here are animals that are perceived as scary but they aren t at all. #brightside TIMESTAMPS: House centipede 0:14 Goliath birdeater 3:02 Whale shark 3:26 Giant African millipede 3:54 Australian thorny dragons 4:08 Wrinkle-faced bats 4:35 Aye-ayes 4:54 Gharial 5:20 Milk snakes 5:48 Mata mata spiky turtles 6:16 Virginia tiger moth 6:41 Vultures 7:11 Giant isopods 7:38 Star-nosed mole 8:06 Tailless whip scorpions 8:34 Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brightside/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brightgram/ 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: https://www.goo.gl/8JVmuC Stock materials (photos, footages and other): https://www.depositphotos.com https://www.shutterstock.com https://www.eastnews.ru ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/
