Our addition needs a small deck that leads to the patio. Tom Silva and Norm Abram tackle one of DIY’s most popular subjects as they show the construction fundamentals of this backyard icon. The family room will be connected to the patio by a simple rectangular deck. Tom Silva and Norm Abram work together to install the framing. First they flash the area where the deck will meet the house with a self-sealing membrane. Then they install the ledger and joist hangers. They use 2x12 lumber for the rim joists, making sure to pitch them away from the house for water run-off. They also use 2x12 lumber across the front so there is plenty of nailing space where the stair stringers will meet the deck. The support posts are 4x4 and are notched out for the rim joists. Last, two 2x8 interior joists are set 16 inches on center. The decking will be 1x4 ipe wood and will go down later. Have you ever thought of what it will be like to live in a dome for, say, a year? Sci-fi writers often write stories about groups of people that live in an isolated space and produce everything they need for a normal life all by themselves. We decided to try to imagine what life under a dome would be like, too. So if you re a fan of unusual what-if stories as we are, you will probably like this video. Okay, imagine that after 5 years of construction, your town’s dome was finally completed last night. It cost over $150 billion, but it was a smart investment in a self-sustaining future. Inspired by the dreams of yesteryear. There were ancient buildings with massive domes that stood for millennia. Then sports stadiums adopted this strongest of architectural shapes – “superdomes” they called them. Indoor sports resorts under the protection of a dome, like Tropical Islands in Germany. Giant biodomes and greenhouses such as the Eden Project in the UK. So, picture this: the blare of a loudspeaker chimes throughout the area. You jump out of bed, confused. You run out to the balcony and look down. People run along the sidewalk shouting, “Ants!!!” Ants? Those tiny insects? The average ant is less than 1 inch in size. But what is happening in the city? Suddenly, she appears at the end of the block—a huge red ant. The size of a human, she’s confidently walking along the sidewalk, swinging her long antennae from side to side, searching for prey, opening and closing her mandibles like a trap. Air traffic controllers at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport are in charge of 909,431 takeoffs and landings at the world s busiest airport (in a normal year). But the job isn t easy. Not only are lives on the line, but any mistake at Atlanta could cause a ripple effect of delays across the country and the world. Pre-pandemic, Business Insider went up inside America s tallest air traffic control tower to learn what it takes to be one of 58 air traffic controllers here.
