A siphon is a tube that allows liquid to travel upward, above the surface of the origin reservoir, then downwards to a lower level without using a pump. When a certain amount of water moves over the bend in the siphon, gravity pulls it down on the longer leg lowers the atmospheric pressure in the bend of the siphon. So, the atmospheric pressure on the other side of the siphon becomes stronger and forces the rest of the water up and over the bend in the siphon. How Does a Siphon Work in a Toilet? Without electricity or any mechanicals, a toilet is able to flush away any wastewater into a sewer or septic system—proving to be quite a marvel for modern society. Richard shows how siphons are the basic principle that makes toilets work, even if the water supply in the house was turned off. How to Operate a Toilet Push the lever to pull the stopper in the tank With the stopper open, all the water in the tank rushes into the bowl The rush of water activates a siphon, caused by the shape of the drain here, which pulls the waste out of the toilet When the tank is empty, the stopper falls back over the hole, allowing the water supply to refill the tank Where to Find it? Richard demonstrated the principle of a siphon jet on a Glacier Bay toilet, though every toilet from every manufacturer operates using a similar siphon jet. Adding landscape lighting to a walkway or path can improve the look and experience of the area. Once Heath figures out what kind of landscape lighting he wants, the location, and where the power source is located, he can then make the connections. Heath uses a low voltage wire and decides to replace the plastic connectors with brass connectors to make the connections last longer. He also installs a transformer so the homeowner can control when the lights power on and off. Place lights in desired locations. Step 2: Run a low voltage cable Run a low voltage cable in the trench but do not bury. A low voltage cable is used as it is only 12v and if it accidentally gets cut, nobody will get hurt. Step 3: Start making connections Heath recommends a higher quality brass connector because the plastic ones that come free with the landscape wire are more susceptible to damage and corrosion. Cut and strip the wire. Make the connection with the brass barrel connectors with an allen key. Before securing the second side slip the shrink sleeves over the barrels, Apply light heat to the sleeves Step 4: Install the transformer at the receptacle Take the low voltage cable and put one wire in the hot terminal and one wire in the common terminal of the transformer. The transformer converts the power to low voltage and can control when the lights power on and off. Heath picked out a system that has a photocell that plugs into it. That way the lights come on at dusk and off at dawn. If you don’t want the lights on all night you can add a timer to the system. Test the system. Step 5: Dig a pathway for the cable Use a flat shovel to dig a 6” trench along the pathway for the cable. This way it will be much easier to find if it ever needs to be dug up and keeping it on the edge should protect it from getting cut while gardening. Bury the cable to the bottom of the 6” mark. Hands will work fine but if a tool is desired make sure it is blunt enough to not pierce or damage the wire. The internet has an abundance of lifehacks readily available for anyone seeking to make life easier. You can find some of the craziest ones on TikTok, and I wanted to give some of them a try. Let’s see if they work as well as they claim to! The DIY UV light is made taping red and blue tape over your phone’s camera. Supposedly, it makes all the stains and filth apparent and… it worked! I also tested the temporary tattoo removal trick using tape, and as surprising as it was, it also worked! Testing the soda bottle trick was a bit trickier, but it was fun to be able to have a refreshing drink even with no bottle opener around. A party trick for the book, for sure! I didn’t believe the egg in a bottle one was possible, so I was eager to see the results. Do you think it worked? As an art loved, I was looking forward to the abstract painting trick and I was pleasantly surprised! I also tried using lipstick as concealer, and it turns out it’s legit! Shut off water by hand or with a specialty wrench. Be careful not to over torque. 2. Use a pan or rag to catch any dripping water under the sink. Turn on the faucet to relieve any water pressure left in the lines. 3. Disconnect the supply lines from the faucet. Use a multi-purpose plumbing tool if you cannot reach by hand. 4. Remove the old faucet. 5. Place Plumber’s Putty around the bottom of the faucet to make a water tight connection. It should fill in any imperfection of the sink. 6. Place the faucet through the mounting holes in the sink and tighten the nuts. 7. Remove the excess putty. 8. Install the lift rod. So you’ve bought yourself a new computer and suddenly there’s no place for your old one in your home. You can always sell it, of course, but there are much more interesting ways to use your old laptop or desktop PC. Turn it into a home server. Instead of keeping all your files on your new computer’s hard drive, you can set up a home group and connect all your devices in a single network. Then, make your old computer’s drive shared with the whole network, and everyone in your house will be able to view and use files stored on it, as well as share their own. This comes in especially handy when someone in your family has a device with low space — this way, they can always keep new files in the shared storage. You also can make a surveillance camera out of it. It might look weird, though, if you just hang your laptop outside the door, so you may want to rewire it a little bit and extract the camera first.
