Robots of the future may be softer, squishier and bendier than robots today. This could make them ideal for space exploration. Check out http://kiwico.com/Veritasium50 for 50% off your first month of any subscription! On Thursday February 18th, 2021 the NASA Perseverance Rover will land on Mars. It is a wonderful robot, made out of steel and wire — but will future robots look like Perseverance? There is an emerging field of research on "soft robots", where the machines are flexible. These soft robots have many advantages over traditional robots — they re safer, lighter, more flexible and can change their shape and size. NASA is investigating the use of soft robots for space missions. For future visits to Enceladus or Europa, a lander could cut a hole in the ice and then insert a compliant robot through the hole. This robot could then grow and change shape on the other side. References: N. S. Usevitch, Z. M. Hammond, M. Schwager, A. M. Okamura, E. W. Hawkes, S. Follmer, An untethered isoperimetric soft robot. Love is the excited feeling we get in the presence of someone of unusual accomplishment and talent – great intelligence or beauty for the most part – whom we hope will reciprocate our interest and whom we badly want to touch, caress and one day share our lives with. This definition sounds so plausible and enjoys such powerful cultural endorsement, we are apt to miss another vision of love altogether, this one focused not so much on the appreciation of strength as on a tolerance of, and kindness towards, what is weak and misshapen…" MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Watch more films on RELATIONSHIPS in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLrelationships SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Eunju Ara Choi https://vimeo.com/arachoi Title animation produced in collaboration with Vale Productions https://www.valeproductions.co.uk/

Explore how greenhouse gas emissions impact global warming and why it’s necessary to get emissions down to net zero. -- Since 1850, global average temperatures have risen by 1 degree Celsius. That may not sound like a lot, but it is. Why? 1 degree is an average. Many places have already gotten much warmer and if average temperatures increase one more degree, the coldest nights in the Arctic might get 10 degrees warmer. So how did we get here? And what can be done? Explore the challenges of net zero emissions. Directed by Lisa LaBracio. Animation and art direction by Luísa M H Copetti & Hype CG. Before they officially become United States Marines, all recruits must endure "The Crucible," an event that tests them physically and psychologically for 54 straight hours with minimal sleep and food. Chief video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent four days at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina, embedded with the gender-integrated Hotel Company during its Crucible event. Among the recruits were a brother and sister both experiencing the event together. Recruits hike for miles in the cold darkness wearing about 50 pounds of gear, face off in hand-to-hand combat inside the "Octagon," experience intense combat scenarios, and work together to overcome obstacles that test their bodies and minds. The event culminates with the emotional Eagle, Globe, and Anchor Ceremony, where the recruits receive a pendant that symbolizes their official transformation into United States Marines. We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to go travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this #travelvlog to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling, and we didn’t want to stop after just one year! After achieving our new goal of 100 countries and then all 7 continents (check out our documentary here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuFv4iF8wgg&t=1s), we had no plans to slow down, until 2020 decided to force us to ;) which is when we bought a converted Sprinter van to start exploring our own country for the first time. It was a major adjustment and so different than flying every week like we were used to, but we are incredibly thankful to be able to continue doing something we love every day. 😊🎥🌎

💡 Check out the Bright Side shop (open globally!) at: http://bit.ly/2OJubyA February 14, 2000. Just a regular Valentine’s Day! 💝 Some flowers and candies, the beginning of the new millennium, and… A good day to make history. A spacecraft finally got a date with asteroid 433 Eros. This "date" almost didn’t happen because an engine misfire caused it to miss the asteroid. But engineers decided to let the spacecraft do the circle around the Sun for one more year, and it eventually made it. Asteroid 433 Eros is indeed the smallest body in our solar system that got its own spacecraft orbiting it. This asteroid is special in another way too. Most of them end up somewhere between the orbits of Jupiter and Mars and simply pass us by at a safe distance. But not Eros. It became the first of Near-Earth Asteroids. We re now keeping a close eye on this asteroid that s getting too close to Earth for comfort! More on that and some other mind-blowing space objects. Like the first outer space visitor that entered our solar system! 😲🌌 #brightside Preview photo credit: Glimpses into Eros Shadows: By NASA/JPL/JHUAPL – https://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA02487, Public Domain https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=81479327 Animation is created by Bright Side. Funny ideas and Tricks that will blow your friends’ minds. Are you guys ready to have some fun? In this video, we show you some fantastic magic tricks you can try that will amaze your friends and family. We also reveal how some magicians perform their stunts and how they make it look like they’re real. For example, the sword swallowing is actually a foldable sword that can get as tiny as 1 inch. Have you also seen one of those brilliant trick shots people capture on camera? Where they stand 10 feet away from a cup, and they manage to throw in their toothbrush or a straw? Well, those are actually fake. The person filming the stunt holds another duplicate object on top of the container and drops it in at the right time to make it look believable. Watch the entire video to discover some cool hacks with magnets and other magic tricks you can try at home.
