Explore the viability of wooden skyscrapers, and see how cross-laminated timber (CLT) helps make these once impossible structures possible. -- Towering 85 meters above the Norwegian countryside, Mjøstårnet is the world’s tallest wooden building, made almost entirely from the trees of neighboring forests. But as recently as the end of the 20th century, engineers thought it was impossible to build a wooden building over 6 stories tall. So how do wooden structures like this compare to steel and concrete skyscrapers? Stefan Al investigates. Lesson by Stefan Al, directed by Franz Palomares. Tom Silva and Kevin O’Connor build a corner stair on the new back deck at the Lexington house. Then Kevin and Norm Abram finish up the trim and decking on the new corner deck stair. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Tom Silva shows Kevin O’Connor the progress on the new back deck at the Lexington house, and how the architect has called for a corner stair leading down to the backyard. The framing requires two sets of traditional stringer systems, joined in the middle by a hip stringer and a series of jack stringers; the same idea as framing a hip roof. Then Kevin and Norm Abram finish up the trim and decking on the new corner deck stair. For the ipe deckboards that are sharply mitered in the corner, Norm has settled on using a floating tenon connection to prevent them from opening up over time. In today s video, we re tackling the Laguna Torre trail in the trekking capital of Argentina! This is an 18-kilometre loop that leads to a lagoon with views of Cerro Torre, and it s one of the better-known treks in El Chalten, though not quite as hard as the one we trekked the previous day to Laguna de Los Tres. A few points of interest for anyone trekking to Laguna Torre include the Margarita Waterfall (Km 0.7), the Torre Lookout (2.5), the trail towards Madre e Hija (Km 5), the De Agostini campground for anyone staying overnight (Km 8), and finally Laguna Torre (Km 9). This is a medium-difficulty trail with the majority of the elevation gain at the start of the trek, but then things really flatten out around Km 3.5-4, so it s easy to gain a lot of ground. A few of the things we enjoyed about this trail was the fact that we had a hanging glacier on the horizon, which was really motivating, plus we got to hike through forests, along rivers, and past lagoons. It was a fun day of trekking in Patagonia and we d highly recommend the Laguna Torre trek if you re visiting El Chalten. #elchalten #trekking #lagunatorre * * * * * * * * * * * * Scenic TREK to LAGUNA TORRE in El Chalten 🌿 | This is the TREKKING CAPITAL of Argentina! 🇦🇷 GEAR WE USE Panasonic GH5: http://amzn.to/2yqTUyi Canon G7X ii: http://amzn.to/2yqtM6B Rode Video Micro: http://amzn.to/2wTguTM Joby Gorilla Pod: http://amzn.to/1PgoY5F SanDisk 16GB Extreme Pro: http://amzn.to/25KEErs * * * * * * * * * * * * SOCIAL MEDIA & TRAVEL BLOGS AUDREY: blog: http://thatbackpacker.com/ instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thatbackpacker/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thatbackpacker twitter: https://twitter.com/ThatBackpacker SAMUEL: blog: http://nomadicsamuel.com/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nomadicsamuel twitter: https://twitter.com/NomadicSamuel instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadicsamuel/ * * * * * * * * * * * * Music We Use: http://bit.ly/SamAudreyMusic

An inexpensive chess set can sell for $20, but a handcrafted wooden set certified for the World Chess Championship costs $500. Much of the set s value lies in just one piece: the knight. Each knight must be carved by hand to look exactly the same. Making this one piece takes two hours, and there are fewer than 10 people trained to carve knights for the championship chess sets. So, how are these chessmen made? And why are they so expensive? When we talk about the American Revolution and Revolutionary War, the discussion often involves lofty ideals like liberty, freedom, and justice. The Declaration of Independence even opens with the idea that "all men are created equal." But it turns out, the war wasn t being fought on behalf of "all men." The war was mainly about freedom for white colonists, and liberty, justice, and the pursuit of happiness didn t apply to the Black people living in the British colonies. During the war, Black people took up arms on both sides of the conflict, and today we re going to learn how and why they participated.
