We got an inside look at what it s like during the first week for new freshmen, known as "rats," at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. "Hell week" marks the beginning of the rats journey to becoming full-fledged cadets at VMI, the oldest public senior military college in the US, which has been at the center of controversy for decades because of allegations of sexism and racism and its historical ties to the Confederacy. VMI is now led by Cedric T. Wins, the first Black superintendent in the school s 182-year history. During the past year, VMI has removed on-post tributes to the Confederacy, including statues and quotes. Hell week begins with matriculation day, the first step of a challenging six-month program that builds up to "breakout," when the rats become cadets. After saying goodbye to their families, the new rats encounter an intense indoctrination from the cadre, a group of upperclassmen tasked with leading the new class during matriculation. Hell week concludes with an event known as "The Crucible," which presents the rats with a series of mental and physical challenges. Heath heads to a homeowner s house to help her with a dimly lit room. The homeowner explains that she has recessed lights in some of her rooms, but the children s playroom is lit only with a lamp. Heath knows just what to do, offering recessed lighting in the playroom to match the other areas in the home. After accessing the layout of the framing and the plumbing in the ceiling, Heath gets to work. After ensuring that the power is off, Heath rewires a switch-controlled outlet so that it s on constant power. Then, after removing the switch, Heath can look into the wall cavity to ensure that it s free of obstruction. Next, Heath drills holes in the ceiling for recessed lights (utilizing the dust shroud for mess control) and inside the wall for wiring. With the homeowner s help, Heath pulls wires for the new lights through the ceiling and back to the switch location before wiring the individual devices. Then, back at the switch, Heath installs a dimmer switch to control the room s brightness. Google s incursion into hardware has shown us a very interesting pattern of priorities. From forgettable looks, to odd design choices, and even a brief stint into only making mid-rangers, it s clear Google has always been open to experiment. I can t really say I d call any of their phones visually great, but their software was a different story. It s crazy how the company has spent years delivering some of the best photography I ve ever taken, more software updates than every other Android OEM, and steady feature enhancements even to old devices, all while using aging camera sensors and less-powerful chips than the rest. It makes me wonder if this is the reason for their lack of success. It s sad to see more enthusiasm in the comments than we see in sales figures. It only proves a point that regardless of how victorious Google is in software, hardware requires moves that are just as bold. This is the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. What Google calls the best they have to offer, built around you, and what I would call the most dramatic change Google has ever done to this lineup.
