Cut four 2x4s and four 2x3s for the bench’s legs. To ensure that the finished work surface is a comfortable height for kids, cut them to 33 inches long. 2. Using 2x4 lumber, cut the framing components for the work surface and the shelf below. Cut four 2x4s to 60 inches long and eight to roughly 27 inches long. 3. Lay two 60-inch 2x4s out and place four short 2x4s in between them to form the benchtop. Pre-drill and screw through the long boards and into the short boards at both ends. In the middle, pre-drill holes through the front and back, 20 inches in from both sides. Place the short boards between these holes and screw into them. Repeat this process for the shelf. 4. Assemble each leg using one 2x4 and one 2x3 to form an L. Pre-drill and screw through the 2x4 into the 2x3. Repeat this until you have four legs. 5. Lay the benchtop frame upside down on a flat surface and place a leg at each corner. Drill through the leg and into the frame to attach the leg. Repeat at all four corners. 6. Lay the assembled benchtop and legs on their side and insert the shelf from the bottom of the legs. Be sure to install the shelf high enough that feet can fit underneath it but low enough to provide plenty of storage. Roughly 10 inches from the bottoms of the table legs should be fine. 7. Cut and install eight brackets for stabilization under the shelf (two for each leg). Cut a 45-degree angle on each end and screw through the brackets into the table legs and bottom of the shelf. 8. Lift the MDF sheet off the work surface with blocks and use the track saw or circular saw to cut it to length and width. For the benchtop, cut a sheet to 65 inches long and 32 inches wide to allow for an overhang. For the shelf, cut the sheet to 60 inches long and 27 inches wide to fit between the legs. Pre-drill and screw through the worktop and into the framing. 9. Sand the edges of the benchtop to create a smooth work surface. I use my Hario gooseneck kettle for making pour over coffee. I like everything about it except the plastic handles that it came with. I decided to carve new handles out of a scrap piece of walnut I had using my cordless drill. Carving with a drill is actually really easy. I used a brad point drill bit, a drum sander, and a carving bar to shape the handles. I really like the idea of partial DIY projects that result in an upgraded and customized object. I am excited to customize more of the stainless steel kitchen items with walnut handles so that they will match even though they are different brands. Pegboard adds organization Pegboard makes an excellent solution for organizing tools. Simply attach a sheet to some 1x2-inch furring strips to the back of the pegboard using CA glue and an activator spray. My friend has an old house in Boston with high heating bills during the cold winter months. I experimented with my Ryobi PhoneWorks Inspection scope see what kind of insulation was in his walls. I used my PhoneWorks thermometer to see how adding expending insulation would impact the performance of the room. The interior surface temperature of the wall before I added insulation was about 63 degrees. It took me about 10 minutes to add insulation to a 2 foot section of the wall and afterwards the interior surface was about 68 degrees. You should consult with a qualified construction professional before impacting your building envelope. Expanding foam should be used with caution. Too much foam can occasional warp window frames. It is a great insulator but should not be used near fireplaces or other points of combustion. Step 1: Scan walls looking for insulation weak spots. I used the Infrared thermometer to look at the surface temperature of the wall. Cold spots tell me where there is little thermal resistance between the interior and exterior. Step 2: Drill a Hole through the drywall I drilled a ½” diameter hole just through the drywall. This hole will let me poke the Inspection scope through and see inside the wall. Step 3: Inspect I used to the inspection scope to look inside the wall. I moved it all around and found that there was virtually no insulation in the wall. I was also able to see what the structure of the windowsill looked like. Everything was pretty solid and I didn’t see any exposed old wires so I decided to add spray foam. Step 4: Spray Foam I used Greatstuff brand spray foam to fill up the wall cavity. This is a messy product and expands rapidly to fill all gaps and crevices in the wall. Step 5: Patch the holes Once the spray foam had fully expanded and dried I sealed the holes with putty. Step 6: Test I used the Infrared Thermometer to scan the wall again and found that they were now significantly warmer than before due to the added insulation. The first step to any lathe project is to cut the wood to be square. It should have the same depth and height. The length can be either long or short, but with the other two sides square, you will be able to ensure it spins on the lathe safely and correctly. 2. Set the rip vent on the table saw to a pre-determined length, and run the scrap wood through the blade where appropriate. 3. Now, it’s time to set up the lathe. a. First, measure and mark the center of the wood with a square. b. Remove the spur from the lathe and hammer it into position with a rubber mallet. c. Insert the spur into the lathe and slide it into position until it’s against the spindle. d. Then, power on the lathe at a low speed to ensure the piece turns correctly. e. Tom increases the speed once the wood is secured correctly. Now, it’s time to start turning. 4. Tom turns on the lathe using a roughing gouge until the square block is rounded. 5. Once the block is rounded, switch to a parting tool, which helps round out the edges and gives the ornaments their details. 6. Sand the ornament using a smaller lathe. 7. Clean up the ornament and paint them using either a drill press or drill driver (or by hand). 8. Finally, drill small holes in the ornaments to thread string through to hand on a Christmas tree. Where to Find It? Tom turned the Christmas ornaments using scrap wood he had from other projects, though he suggests that any pieces of wood that’s square will be easy to turn into an ornament. The tools Tom used to actually turn the rolling pin can be found at any specialty woodworking store. Ever since my DIY concrete nesting table video went viral commenters have been leaving comments about how the tables will crumble under the slightest amount of weight. I purposely did not put in reinforcement du to the thinness of the tables. Metal reinforcement that is near the surface of concrete can rust and stain the concrete from the inside. Also it can be quite difficult to cast metal directly in the center of concrete that is that thin. Now it should be noted that the Quikrete countertop mix that I used is about twice as strong as typical concrete mix. This mix is about 6000 psi and does not contain large pieces of aggregate. These copper tiki torches are one of my favorite outdoor DIY projects. They are modern, and clean looking but are quite easy to make. I made them 2 different ways and anchored them with a concrete footing made from Quikrete Fast-Setting concrete mix. This method of post setting can be used for all sorts of outdoor projects. The first one I made I exposed the copper pieces together, which is really easy. For the 2nd one I tried soldering the pieces. With winter rolling in, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey and home technology expert Ross Trethewey explain cost-effective ways to save money on heating to Kevin O Connor. After presenting the tendencies and physics of heated air, Richard and Ross discuss the importance of insulating the roof of a home. Heated Air is Predictable Specific physics applies to heated air. First, it wants to move upward, often finding its way through the roof. Also, heated air will always move toward cold air, and the colder the air, the more it wants to move. For instance, if it s 70 degrees in the home but only 15 degrees outside, heated air will work even harder to escape through the top of the building. It can also try to escape through the walls. Insulate from the Top Down Since warm air rises, you need to trap it in the home. Putting a warm hat on the building by insulating the attic is key. Fiberglass, rigid foam, and bubble pack insulation are great for the job. Just be sure that all the insulation is correctly in place, especially after any retrofit work might ve occurred. While many folks are satisfied with insulating between the floor joists in the attic, it s not the best place. This is often where the heating and cooling mechanicals are, and leaving the attic space itself uninsulated makes it harder for them to work efficiently. Instead, consider insulating the roof itself. Air Sealing is Just as Important as Insulation There is a difference between insulating and air sealing, and when it comes to trapping heated air in, air sealing is critical. Issues like gaps between window panes, gaps under exterior doors, and even the space around an outlet in an exterior wall can allow cold air to penetrate the home while warm air pours out. A ¼-inch gap between window panes can equal as much as a hole the size of a baseball in an exterior wall. For ½-inch gaps under doors, that area can equal as much as a hole the size of a softball. For leaky windows, installing new sash locks can help pull things tighter, but installing a shrink wrap kit around the window can help trap air and create a lot of insulation. Consider installing weather stripping around the side for doors with gaps and a door sweep at the bottom. For outlet or switch boxes in exterior walls, caulk around the gap between the box and the drywall to keep heated or cold air from passing through. A Few Words of Caution Many folks choose to shut heating zones off to save money during the winter. While this can be effective, pay attention to things that freeze within the space. Insulate any pipes in the unheated room or drain the pipes in completely unused areas to prevent freezing and splitting. Also, don t forget to keep any radiators or heating vents clear from furniture to allow the mechanicals to heat the space efficiently.
