Life
Join me now for a magic moment in the little town of Hall, Austria — just enjoying good friends, some spaetzle and dumplings, and the mellow tempo of life. The locals here have a name for this cozy feeling: “Gemütlichkeit.” And right now, under this chestnut tree with old friends...it’s Gemütlichkeit. I’ve traveled to the Alps with my crew to film three new episodes of Rick Steves’ Europe, and we’re off to a great start. We’ve traveled together for decades, and I’ve never seen my cameraman Karel dance — but just look at him now. This is joyful travel.

I’m high above the Swiss village of Zermatt, celebrating the wonders of the Alps — and marveling at a 100-year-old railway that still brings travelers 10,000 feet above sea level. There’s a big hotel up here, with big views...and if you’re riding just one big lift in the region, this is my choice. For hiking and enjoying the views above Zermatt, take the oldest and best high lift in the area: the cogwheel train up the Gornergrat.

Mérida – Welcome to the capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan. While much of the peninsula is famed for its resorts, Mérida is the epicentre of Yucatan culture, history and pride. I was just in the Alps with my TV crew, filming three new episodes of Rick Steves’ Europe. We spent a couple of days hiking (and filming) on the Tour du Mont Blanc trail, in the French Alps. It’s a whole parallel world there, away from the tourist crowds and intensity of the Alpine resorts, and really peaceful. After just a taste of this classic long-distance hike, I am dreaming of coming back and doing the entire loop — and once again, I’m reminded that you can never run out of rewarding corners of Europe to explore. What’s your favorite long-distance hiking experience in Europe?

Our final stop on our Egypt TV shoot was the dramatic Temple of Abu Simbel: the southern-most point of our travels, a half-hour flight south of Aswan. Being here, you marvel at how the temple was relocated to save it from being submerged and lost forever with the damming of the Nile at Aswan in 1968. You also are reminded how the United Nations (through UNESCO in this case) takes on projects — even expensive ones like this--that matter to all of humanity when no other organization can or will.
