On the Beautiful Blue Danube (1867) by Johann Strauss, Jr. (1825-1899) This clip of "On the Beautiful Blue Danube" from the one-hour special "Rick Steves Europe: A Symphonic Journey," celebrates the city of Vienna and the river that runs through it in the world s most famous waltz. In "Rick Steves Europe: A Symphonic Journey" Rick teams up with the Cascade Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Michael Miropolsky, on a musical tour that begins in the USA, then touches down in seven different European countries. The result is a performance that combines Europe s most stirring Romantic-era anthems with beautiful high-definition cinematography and Rick s insights into European history. Sydney, located on the east coast of Australia, is surrounded by rare natural beauty and some of the most extraordinary architecture in the world. There’s something for everyone in the capital of New South Wales. Besides enjoying year-round sunshine at over 100 beaches, headlands, and coves, you’ll also find a friendly population, and a ton of local culture. Sydney tourism often touches on its beginnings as a penal colony. It swiftly shed its image as one big jail cell and now features exquisite Victorian buildings, numerous parks, and plenty of art galleries, museums, and restaurants for you to explore. Not sure where to start? Go straight to the top of Sydney Tower, where you can enjoy 360-degree views of the city from 800 feet up—that might help you decide where to go next. Once you’ve figured out some places you want to visit on your Sydney sightseeing, head to Circular Quay, where you can travel almost anywhere on the ferry, the water taxi, or the train. We recommend a visit to the Sydney Opera House, which you’ve probably seen in a number of advertisements and movies; this striking structure is free to tour—you don’t have to put on your fancy shoes. Don’t forget a walk along the Sydney Harbor Bridge. If you’re feeling really daring, you can even squeeze into a safety harness and climb along the very top. After a breathtaking view of the harbor (and maybe a few heart-pounding moments during the climb down), relax by the water. What will you do on your Sydney tour?
