Hank does his best to convince us that chemistry is not torture, but is instead the amazing and beautiful science of stuff. Chemistry can tell us how three tiny particles - the proton, neutron, and electron - come together in trillions of combinations to form ... everything. In this inaugural episode of Crash Course Chemistry, we start out with one of the biggest ideas in chemistry ever - stuff is made from atoms. More specifically, we learn about the properties of the nucleus and why they are important to defining what an atom actually is. In this episode, we ll look at what we can learn about the search for love from the search for extraterrestrial life. We ll start with Enrico Fermi s paradox of why we haven t been contacted by any extraterrestrials yet, and then at Frank Drake s equation to estimate the number of civilizations that might exist in our galaxy (updated with current numbers). In which John Green teaches you about the (English) colonies in what is now the United States. He covers the first permanent English colony at Jamestown, Virginia, the various theocracies in Massachusetts, the feudal kingdom in Maryland, and even a bit about the spooky lost colony at Roanoke Island. What were the English doing in America, anyway? Lots of stuff. In Virginia, the colonists were largely there to make money. In Maryland, the idea was to create a colony for Catholics who wanted to be serfs of the Lords Baltimore. In Massachusetts, the Pilgrims and Puritans came to America to find a place where they could freely persecute those who didn t share their beliefs. But there was a healthy profit motive in Massachusetts as well. Profits were thin at first, and so were the colonists. Trouble growing food and trouble with the Natives kept the early colonies from success. Before long though, the colonists started cultivating tobacco, which was a win for everyone involved if you ignore the lung cancer angle. So kick back, light up a smoke, and learn how America became profitable. DON T SMOKE, THOUGH! THAT WAS A JOKE! Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit s free collection of reading passages and curriculum resources to learn more about the events of this episode. As a Canadian-Australian, I have always wondered why it is that Australia has so many venomous animals that can kill you while Canada has virtually none. Subscribe to Veritasium - it s free! http://bit.ly/YSWpWm But it s not just Australia - it seems like all beautiful, warm places are cursed with venomous native species. So I set out to find the truth: why have all these venomous species evolved in the world s best holiday destinations? I asked chemists, visited the zoo, interviewed entomologists and snake experts. The answer I found was complicated: 1. The majority of venomous species are ectotherms, cold-blooded creatures whose internal temperatures are governed by their surroundings. 2. This means they have limited periods of activity - mainly while it s warm out, and can only exert short bursts of energy, so they are generally "sit and wait" predators. This may explain why they, more than mammals or birds, evolved venom. 3. It also explains why there are more of these species in warm climates. There are more of all species in warm climates, but this trend is especially pronounced for ectotherms. 4. So there are a greater number of venomous species in warm places, simply because there are more species in warm places. Cold climates still have venomous creatures, like the rattlesnakes of Canada and European vipers. 5. But history also has a role to play. In Australia, there were no snakes until 20 million years ago when a venomous sea snake from Asia encountered the land, sending venomous species to all corners of the continent. Later non-venomous arrivals have done well in the tropics but not as well in Australia s colder climates, so venomous types still dominate there. Hawaii has no venomous land snakes and nor does Jamaica. 6. The recent ice age also would have driven ectotherms from the northern parts of the Northern Hemisphere. This is why there are no snakes in Ireland, for example. Special thanks to Prof. Rick Shine, Prof. Dieter Hochuli, Prof. Roger Lowe, Prof. Martyn Poliakoff and Taronga Zoo, especially Joe Haddock and Dean Purcell. Cinematography by Charles Clement

In this tutorial, I ll show you a way to make your own book cloth. This will make the process of gluing fabric onto your board much easier, preventing air bubbles, wrinkles and glue seeping through. What you ll need is an iron, tissue paper and HeatnBond UltraHold iron-on adhesive - https://amzn.to/3yuu4bA You can also use regular fabric interface (no tissue paper needed). Just keep in mind, if you use regular fabric interfacing, there is still a chance glue can seep through because it s mesh. This is why I like the method in the video — it forms a solid barrier. Interior designer Nate Berkus discusses his approach to interiors and the inspiration for his latest book. Transcript My design aesthetic is a layering of things that, sort of, are left as they are. I don t want anything perfect. I like dings, I like imperfection I like things that feel well-worn. I like to reach for a doorknob that hundreds of people have touched before me. And so, architecturally, I m always about a restoration or reclaiming things, and then aesthetically, the less perfect something is, the more, sort of mottled a finish can be, the more worn, that s my favorite thing. And it s archival. That s how it feels to me. It feels like things have been around for a very long time. The book is something that I m really proud of. The title is The Things That Matter. And what the book is really a reaction to is people scrambling. And you know who you are. You fill your homes with things that you don t have any connection to. When people start rushing to assemble an interior because they re copying something that somebody else had, they haven t stopped to ask themselves the question of what is important to them and what will really represent them in their spaces. That, to me, is really a shame. It s not gonna have a soul. It s not gonna have the opportunity to share with the world who you are and how you self-identify and what makes you happy and how you can extend yourself through your home, to others. And the book, highlights different interiors, including this one, that really sing with personality and individuality. Really, spaces that represent people. It s photographed really beautifully. It s very autobiographical. I ve always believed that design is sort of cumulative of all the experiences that we ve had. The places we ve gone, the people we ve met, everything we ve sort of born witness to. And so when I was writing the book I realized I can t really write a book about my own design evolution and the evolution of these other interiors and the people who live in them without really digging deep and talking about what s formed me as a person and a decorator. What s opened mine eyes. Want even more AD? In which John Green kicks off Crash Course US History! Why, you may ask, are we covering US History, and not more World History, or the history of some other country, or the very specific history of your home region? Well, the reasons are many. But, like it or not, the United States has probably meddled in your country to some degree in the last 236 years or so, and that means US History is relevant all over the world. In episode 1, John talks about the Native Americans who lived in what is now the US prior to European contact. This is a history class, not archaeology, so we re mainly going to cover written history. That means we start with the first sustained European settlement in North America, and that means the Spanish. The Spanish have a long history with the natives of the Americas, and not all of it was positive. The Spanish were definitely not peaceful colonizers, but what colonizers are peaceful? Colonization pretty much always results in an antagonistic relationship with the locals. John teaches you about early Spanish explorers, settlements, and what happened when they didn t get along with the indigenous people. The story of their rocky relations has been called the Black Legend. Which is not a positive legend.
