View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/human-sperm-vs-the-sperm-whale-aatish-bhatia Traveling is extremely arduous for microscopic sperm -- think of a human trying to swim in a pool made of...other humans. We can compare the journey of a sperm to that of a sperm whale by calculating the Reynolds number, a prediction of how fluid will behave, often fluctuating due to size of the swimmer. Aatish Bhatia explores the great (albeit tiny) sperm s journey. Lesson by Aatish Bhatia, animation by Brad Purnell.

MinutePhysics on permanent magnets: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFAOXdXZ5TM Subscribe to Veritasium: http://bit.ly/SuBVe Support Veritasium- get a t-shirt: http://dft.ba/-vetshirt Subscribe to MinutePhysics: http://bit.ly/1eVPynh Magnetism seems like a pretty magical phenomenon. Rocks that attract or repel each other at a distance - that s really cool - and electric current in a wire interacts in the same way. What s even more amazing is how it works. We normally think of special relativity as having little bearing on our lives because everything happens at such low speeds that relativistic effects are negligible. But when you consider the large number of charges in a wire and the strength of the electric interaction, you can see that electromagnets function thanks to the special relativistic effect of length contraction. In a frame of reference moving with the charges, there is an electric field that creates a force on the charges. But in the lab frame, there is no electric field so it must be a magnetic field creating the force. Hence we see that a magnetic field is what an electric field becomes when an electrically charged object starts moving. I was inspired to make this video by Prof. Eric Mazur http://mazur.harvard.edu/emdetails.php Huge thank you to Ralph at the School of Physics, University of Sydney for helping us out with all this magnetic gear. Thanks also to geology for loaning the rocks. This video was filmed in the studio at the University of New South Wales - thanks to all the staff there for their time and support. Materials: Tarp Mirror Tape Cabot Wood Finish in Cinnamon Toast and Gingersnap Paint Brush Small artists brush Sand paper Rag - Start with a raw wood mirror. If you are using a thrifted mirror, make sure to sand it down first - Tape off the edges so you don t get any finish onto the mirror - Tape off the corners to apply your first color to the top and bottom of the mirror - Using a paint brush, not a rag...apply your first color with long, smooth brush strokes - now pick up the tape in the corners and switch it over to the part you ve already finished (make sure it s dry to the touch before you lay the tape down)...that way you can apply your second color to the sides of the mirror. - apply your second color - pick up the tape and allow the finish to dry for 2 hours - once dry, apply your embellishments in the corners with an artist brush - allow to dry - remove the remaining tape from the mirror and wash your brushes with water and soap Disclaimer: This is a sponsored video but the ideas are my own! In which John Green teaches you about American involvement in World War I, which at the time was called the Great War. They didn t know there was going to be a second one, though they probably should have guessed, cause this one didn t wrap up very neatly. So, the United States stayed out of World War I at first, because Americans were in an isolationist mood in the early 20th century. That didn t last though, as the affronts piled up and drew the US into the war. Spoiler alert: the Lusitania was sunk two years before we joined the war, so that wasn t the sole cause for our jumping in. It was part of it though, as was the Zimmerman telegram, unrestricted submarine warfare, and our affinity for the Brits. You ll learn the war s effects on the home front, some of Woodrow Wilson s XIV Points, and just how the war ended up expanding the power of the government in Americans lives.
