We re here at Park Mount Royal to walk around and head to the lookout point for amazing city views. We chose to stay in the neighborhood of Le Plateau-Mont Royal. On Sunday afternoons you ll find a huge drumming circle on the east end of Mount Royal called Tam Tams. McGill University is one of the most prestigious universities in all of Canada. Poutine, a French Canadian dish, it is basically french fries with gravy and cheese curds on top. For a taste of French charm, wander down the cobbled streets of Old Montreal. Tonight we re at the Cirque du Soleil for a circus performance. The biodome is a popular attraction for families with children. Olympic Stadium is the former home of the Montreal Expos. There is no better place ot eat smoked meat in Montreal than Schwartz. The Notre Dame Basilica is located in the historic district of Old Montreal. If you enjoy checking out graffiti around Saint Catherine street which is also a shopping district. Eat St. Viateur bagels, which are really famous here in Montreal. The 38th episode of HomeMade-modern.com features a DIY Kitchen Island made from concrete and wood. This outdoor kitchen island was designed to be used as a food preparation station next to the grill. Because we planned on using this outside I used cedar lumber and stainless steel screws. The same design could be made using standard 2x4s and deck screws for a little less money. Even though the wood bottom looks quite intricate it is actually quite easy to make. Only a few cross cuts are needed to make it. The assembly is done with stainless steel screws. I used Grey Quikrete commercial grade countertop mix cast into a melamine form to make the top. It is as smooth and hard as stone but weighs about 200 lbs. The HMM team produced free downloadable geometric templates that can be used to make candles, coat hooks and a bunch of other handy knick-knacks. Faceted geometric forms are all the rage now days. Simple colorful paper shapes are showing up all over Pinterest. They are fun and easy but paper only lasts so long. We wanted to create a series of free downloadable templates that could be used as forms or molds to make slightly longer lasting objects. This week we take a tour of the tiny earth houses of Solscape. These beautiful natural buildings are each less than 10 square meters, and sit overlooking the ocean, amongst the beautiful hills of Raglan, New Zealand. The Earth Domes were built using a technique called earth-bag construction, where sturdy sacks are filled with material such as rock, sand and clay and then compacted down. The buildings each have a ferrocement roof and are finished off with a lime plaster. Together, these domes cost less than NZ$10,000.00 to build. A remarkably low-cost, but stunningly beautiful build. Although they are currently used as accommodation at Solscape Eco Retreat, it s easy to see how easily these could be turned into spectacular, permanent tiny and ultra affordable earth houses with mezzanine sleeping loft, kitchen, bathroom and lounge areas.
