So today Craig is going to talk about where our political opinions come from. Of course, most people’s politics are grounded in their ideologies, but there are also other external influences such as the government itself, interest groups, and the media. So we re going to talk about how these influencers factor into the overall public opinion and how their roles have changed over time. Now this stuff may seem like common sense, but it’s important to know where our opinions come from, especially when you consider how quickly the media landscape is changing. Homeowner Susan Bernard shares the design process behind her heritage home, transformed in collaboration with designer Susan Burns. See how they melded the home’s 19th century charm with a mix of modern pieces and antiques – just in time for the homeowner’s daughter’s wedding! Entertaining is an essential part of Susan and her husband’s lifestyle, so they expanded the space and added symmetry with a mix of industrial and vintage elements. Exposed brick and reclaimed wood floors preserve the home’s original character, while heirloom pieces, like an antique table passed down from Susan’s grandmother, bring personality to the space. A reclaimed fireplace is the focal point in the living room, while an Egyptian cement tile backsplash brightens up the otherwise neutral kitchen. Take a look inside each room that features storied items rich in history.
Jane Austen’s novels are so readable in part because she wasn’t an ordinary kind of novelist: she wanted her work to help us to be better and wiser people. Her novels had a philosophy of personal development at their heart. Last week we covered multiple star systems, but what if we added thousands or even millions of stars to the mix? A star cluster. There are different kinds of clusters, though. Open clusters contain hundreds or thousands of stars held together by gravity. They’re young and evaporate over time, their stars let loose to roam space freely. Globular clusters, on the other hand, are larger, have hundreds of thousands of stars, and are more spherical. They’re very old, a significant fraction of the age of the Universe itself, and that means their stars have less heavy elements in them, are redder, and probably don’t have planets (though we’re not really sure). This week on Crash Course Economics, we re talking about monetary policy. The reality of the world is that the United States (and most of the world s economies) are, to varying degrees, Keynesian. When things go wrong, economically, the central bank of the country intervenes to try aand get things back on track. In the United States, the Federal Reserve is the organization that steps in to use monetary policy to steer the economy. When the Fed, as it s called, does step in, there are a few different tacks it can take. The Fed can change interest rates, or it can change the money supply. This is pretty interesting stuff, and it s what we re getting into today. Crash Course is on Patreon! There are a lot of nuclear weapons on Earth, so many that we often say it’s enough to “destroy the world several times over.” But could we? Well, that depends on what you mean. Also...no matter what you mean, probably not. The Earth is pretty sturdy and people are pretty good at surviving and even after all this time and technology, our biggest weapons are pretty puny on a universal scale. ---------- Messages from our Subbable Subscribers To SciShow: DO EPISODES EXPLAINING REALY GOOD MATH TECHNIQUES !!! - Aaron Schwartz Hey best friend, I love you. - Justice Hitchcock I love Milly Fox and look up to Adam Savage. - Miles from Sydney, AUS I love you, Nicholas. - Marisse M. So today, Craig is finally going to start talking about politics. Now up until this point we ve specifically been looking at government - that is answering the questions of who, what, and how in relation to policies. But politics is different in that it looks at why certain policies are made. We re going to start today by looking at public opinion - specifically how the public does (and does not) influence our elected officials.
