Diane Ernjakovic and Rachel Keach of One Three Design share how they transformed a small 475-square-foot basement into a bright and cheerful living space for a family. Diane and Rachel painted the walls white for a fresh feel, and added neutral furniture and punches of colorful accessories. A built-in unit that displays decor has a back-lit mirror for additional lighting and warmth. The homeowner’s husband’s diplomas act as art in the modern office, while the gym features a gorgeous graphic wall. The result is a basement that doesn’t feel like a basement at all, but instead, an extension of the home.

Not many people take off to go and live in monasteries nowadays, but the institution of monasticism has much to teach the modern world, which perhaps places rather too much emphasis on the idea of living in couples. Sam and I are currently visiting Meteora which means suspended in the sky. This is a place that is really well known for its monasteries built atop these rocks. And the landscape is usually out of this world but as you can see we are dealing with a bit of fog and rain today. So it is going to be a bit tricky. Um, we were planning to do a bit of hiking actually but I think that is not going to work out so we re going to settle for some monasteries and caves instead. So let s get ready and go. Since the weather wasn t really cooperating we ended up hopping in a van and driving out to some different look out points around Meteora. Everywhere we turned we were greeted with sweeping views of the towns below, impressive monasteries seeming to defy gravity, and imposing rock towers that looked out of this world. The rain did eventually clear up and that s when we went back to our original plan for a hike around Meteora. Okay guys, so we are finally hitting the trails. It s going to be a 10 kilometer hike. So far we ve already been seeing ruined monasteries and the landscapes are amazing. So let s continue. We have to catch up with our group. Behind me are some massive boulders which are really popular for rock climbing. We re not really into that so we re just doing a hike today. But if you re into rock climbing you ve got to try it over here. The hike was a really easy one and perfect for most fitness levels. Our guide lead us down dirt trails and we learned that there is a network of over 35 kilometers of foot paths in this area. Along the way he pointed out strange rock formations, various mushrooms growing in the forest, and the best part was hearing the tales behind each of the ruins we visited. This is the place where you can taste the echo. Listen! Echo! Woo! It s raining outside, we ve got an abandoned monastery in the background and we re going to do our best echoes. So we ve been visiting a lot of different ruined or abandoned monasteries and this is one of them. Now there is a pretty interesting story behind this one. Apparently, monks used to live here and one day they were out who knows doing some gardening or whatever when a group of people came over and they just took over their home. They started squatting and they took control of the monastery for over 80 years. So the poor monks had to find somewhere else to live. Now today this one has been renovated but you can t actually visit it. So we re just admiring it from a distance. Pretty spectacular I d say. The rain clouds have returned and it is pouring right now. That is the end of our 10 kilometer hike. Okay, so it is still raining but we are going to go visit the biggest monastery here in Meteora. It s called the Grand Meteoron. Low and behold. It s just over there. We ve got our umbrellas. Let s go visit it. Any tips on visiting here? Yes! I actually do have a tip. So prior to coming to Meteora I would have thought okay let s hop on a bus, we ll reach the monastery. Visit the monastery and that will be it. But if you do it that way you re missing out on so much more because the landscapes here are incredible. So I would recommend doing a hike. Kind of like what we did this morning because then you really get to admire the monastery, see them from a distance. You get to visit caves and also visit the abandoned ruins of former monasteries that are kind of hidden and you wouldn t normally be able to spot if you were on the main road. So something to consider. You can get a bit of exercise and really enjoy the landscapes. It wasn t until our final morning in Meteora that the rain clouds finally cleared and we had blue skies over the valley. Though I have to say, we still loved it even in the rain, and that s the sign of a good visit! This is part of our Travel in Greece series. We re making a series of videos showcasing Greek culture, Greek arts, Greek foods, Greek religion, Greek cuisine and Greek people. Music in this video courtesy of Audio Network
For my 30th birthday I decided to live 30 days in the Forest. I will remember the experience for the rest of my life. Until that point, I had never spent a night alone in the woods, nor relied on my survival instinct to get through the day to day. Despite leaving early, it was one of the best experiences of my life. These are the video diaries of my adventure. I hope you enjoy. I think the circular garland and icicles I added bring the perfect wintery addition to any room of the house, but especially to my dining room chandelier! I apologize for missing info i this video. This was not originally slated to be one of the videos of our 25 Days of Christmas … My thought was, it will just be seen at the final reveal “Home Tour” video at the end of the series. But, I loved how it turned out, so we later decided to switch out our cookie baking video for this one. Unfortunately because it was an afterthought that meant there was missing footage. I hope this further explanation helps :-) I decided how big i wanted the wreath effect to be and drew a circle on the ceiling around my existing chandelier with chalk. I then attached the lights on top of the chalk lines with a special rounded-staple type staple gun. The garland had to be nailed in… then the icicles were able to be hung on the garland branches. I had my electrician piggyback off the j-box my chandelier is hanging from. A short white extension cord (about 24”) is staple gunned to the ceiling on the far side (less noticeable) I then plugged in the first set of lights and attached 2 more sets to complete the circle. I was amazed at what an easy and fast fix it was for my electrician to add the extension cord. Seriously less than 5 minutes! I will remove the cord after the holidays. RR Yep... Its going to be swiss cheese in my ceiling when it all comes down! I tried to do a less invasive installation but gravity wasn t having it! I just decided I wanted it bad enough and used whatever it took to get it to hold! Bottom line, staple gun and actual nails where necessary. Small nails but holes nonetheless! Sometimes you have to decide if you want something bad enough and if you do …. just go for it! Designer Jenna Cadieux explains how she refreshed two small bedrooms for kids transitioning into their teen years. See how she revamped a boy’s room and a girl’s room to bring new life into the two very different spaces. The girl’s bedroom already consisted of a custom headboard, which became the foundation of the overall color palette. Jenna added curtains with peach tones, a beaded chandelier, a bookshelf, and a mix of cushions to add some personality. The boy’s bedroom was a lot smaller, so choosing the right pieces to fit the design was key. The double bed took up a lot of room, so Jenna chose a pivoting sconce and floating nightstand to save space. A mango wood desk with floating bookshelves and faux wood blinds add to the rustic, California vibe.

Designer Jean Stéphane Beauchamp explains how he transformed a kitchen into a family-friendly cooking and entertaining space. See how he updated the layout using a new color palette, luxurious materials and custom millwork. Jean Stéphane used the homeowner’s favorite china cabinet as the starting point for the decor, repeating similar lines in the cabinetry throughout. A large U-shaped peninsula is big enough to fit seven people cooking at once, while a utilitarian freezer and wine cooler is set off to the side with the rest of the storage. Pendant lighting and pops of blue add personality to the timeless space.
