Well, welcome to Italy! This week we re exploring the fashion capital of Europe. We re here in Milan. But of course there is more to do in Milan than just go shopping. So we re going to be showing you 20 attractions around town. We had 3 days in Milan so we hit the ground running and tried to see and do as much as possible. We made time for major attractions like Il Duomo, Sforza Castle, and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, but we also veered away from the crowds in search of street art and interesting neighborhoods. This city guide is our best attempt to create a mix of best attractions and off-the-beaten-path activities that you won t necessarily find in a typical Milan tourism brochure. 20 Things to do in Milan Italy Travel Guide Video Transcript: Our first stop was Il Duomo, which is the most recognized attraction in the city. The cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete. So we ve sat down at a little cafe and we re going to have our first Italian breakfast with cappuccino and sweet pastries. Something that surprised us about Milan is that there is a castle right in the middle of the city. Sforza Castle was built in the 15th century by the Duke of Milan, and it then underwent several restorations and expansions in the following centuries. Today it houses several of the city s most prized art possessions, including frescoes by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo s very last sculpture. For some upscale designer shopping, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is the place to be. So we just found a local little restaurant and we re going to be trying a traditional dish that is very popular in this city and in the Lombardy region. We are going to have Risotto alla Milanese. The Colonne di San Lorenzo are the remains of Roman ruins that date back to the 2nd century. They are believed to have been part of a bath house. Another fun activity to try in Milan is a boat tour of the canals. The city s canals are attributed to Leonardo Da Vinci, who in 1482 was called over by the Duke of Milan to help renovate the city’s canal system. Milan s Navigli District is one of the liveliest parts of town especially when the sun goes down for dining al fresco. So we ve gone out for our first Italian Aperitivo. Which is kind of like a pre-dinner drinking tradition. Basically, you get yourself a cocktail for about 10 Euros and that gives you access to this massive buffet. We recently actually spent a few days traveling around Meteora and now we re finishing up our trip here in Athens. We ve got two full days to explore the city which isn t a lot of time but we re going to try to do our best. Our first stop was one of the most recognized sights in Athens - the Parthenon, which was dedicated to the goddess Athena who was seen as the patron of Athens. After sunset we lingered atop Mount Lycabettus for some night views of the city before taking the funicular down to the bottom. Seeing the Acropolis all lit up at night was a pretty cool sight! Next up we visited the Temple of Zeus which once housed the statue of Zeus, and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. When it comes to shopping, there are a few different options. We made our way to Monastiraki, which is one of the principal shopping districts in Athens. Here we visited both the Flea Market and the antique shops in the area.  The Agora was the central spot in ancient Greek city-states, and it is where people gathered. So we are wrapping up our time here in Athens. Any surprises or final thoughts to share? Yeah, something that really surprised me were just the amount of stray animals that I saw on the streets. I also thought there was really good dining options as well. We had a number of really good Greek meals and also some really good International food too. Final thoughts, I think this is a really underrated capital in Europe. A lot like Warsaw in Poland so if you have an opportunity to visit Athens in Greece definitely do so. So what did you think of Athens? Well, I thought it was a really cool city and I actually had a great time here. It kind of reminded me a little bit of Tel Aviv with the Mediterranean feel but also Berlin because it is very artsy and gritty. So it s a really cool place to check out. Great food, lots of attractions. You have a mix of antiquity with urban. And that s a wrap for Athens! We hope you enjoyed this city guide and that it ll come in handy when you plan your own trip. Cut a filler strip to fit behind each side of the mantel. 6. Glue and nail the filler strips to the back of the mantel. 7. Rip a narrow strip of poplar to trim out the top of each pilaster. 8. Glue and nail the trim to the mantel. 9. Use the circular saw to rip a poplar board to fit along the top of the mantel. This board will support the crown molding and mantel shelf. 10. Cut a poplar nailer strip and narrow trim piece to fit the length of the mantel, then fasten them to the mantel with glue and pocket screws. 11. Next, bevel-rip a 1x5 board to width to form the crown molding. 12. Cut a 45-degree miter into each end of the 1x5 crown. 13. Miter-cut a short return piece of 1x5 poplar to fit at each end of the crown. 14. Glue and nail the return pieces to the crown. 15. Glue and nail the crown to the nailer installed on the mantel. 16. Stand the mantel against the fireplace wall and secure it to the wall studs with 3-inch screws. 17. Cut a poplar shelf to fit across the top of the mantel, then nail the shelf to the nailer strip. Also nail at an angle up through the crown molding and into the underside of the mantel shelf. 18. Fill the nail and screw holes with wood putty. Allow the putty to dry overnight, then sand lightly with 120-grit sandpaper. 19. Finish by priming and painting the mantel. This is something that piqued our curiosity, so we devoted a whole morning to cave-hopping around the area. So we have another fun day planned in Meteora. Today we re going around and visiting caves. And now there is a lot of different caves. Earlier in the morning we visited some that were used kind of like to keep farm animals, sheep and goats because they were very accessible and at a lower level. And right now we re visiting caves that were used by hermits and that means monks who wanted to be secluded and just live a very quiet simple life on their own. So these monks in Meteora were extreme adventurers in my opinion. They wanted the caves that were really high up and could not be reached by others so that they could be in isolation on their own. So in order to reach these caves they would have literally had to scale using their hands the first time. And then use ropes and ladders to reach them later on. The monks eventually built monasteries, but don t let that fool you into thinking they were any easier to access. Reaching the top involved a lot of bravado and a whole lot of upper body strength. Next up we re going to be climbing the Holy Spirit Rock which is right behind us. This isn t going to be rock climbing. Apparently there is a trail around the other side so let s go follow our guide because he is already leaving without us. In the afternoon we set our sights on the Holy Ghost Tower which sits in the middle of the valley. It was a good challenge and we were rewarded with some pretty breathtaking views from the top, but my favourite part was walking down the other side and coming face to face with a cave that once acted as a jail for monks! We ve been climbing up The Holy ghost tower and right now we ve reached a little chapel inside a cave. So let s go have a look. 360 views from the top. This is our reward for climbing Holy Spirit Tower. Fresh pomegranate! Mmmm. And it is delicious. So refreshing. So right now we are standing at the mouth of what I m calling the naught monks cave. This was basically like a jail so if a monk was misbehaving he would be sent here and they had fourteen different ledgers which were basically like prison cells where the monks would be placed in isolation.
