Scuba Diving! One of my favourite sports. No matter where I go, there is always just as much to see underwater. We contacted a local dive shop and decided to dive Cenote Nah yah in the Yucatan. This Old House landscape contractor Roger Cook shares tools and techniques for quickly, safely splitting firewood. (See below for steps.) The tools included mauls, wedges, splitting axes, and electric and gas-powered splitters. Steps for How to Split Logs for Firewood: 1. Don t use an ax to split firewood. The narrow head will become stuck in the wood. 2. Short logs can be split into firewood using a steel wedge and sledgehammer, but it s a slow process that requires two people. 3. A maul combines a sledgehammer with a wedge in one tool. It s heavy, but does a good job of splitting logs. 4. A splitting axe is similar to a maul, but it has a narrower, lighter head that easily slices through logs. 5. Always stand the log on a short chopping block, never on the ground. 6. Keep the area around the chopping block clear and free of debris. 7. An electric log splitter provides an easy, quiet way to split logs, but it s rather slow and has limited capacity. 8. Gas-powered log splitters can be rented for splitting virtually any size log. A variety of mauls and splitters are available at home and garden centers. The "splitting axe" that Roger showed was manufactured by Fiskars Brands, Inc. The campus is open to visitors interested in touring the grounds, and you ll also get to hear some fascinating stories of famous students, including the likes of Oscar Wilde, Jonathan Swift, and Bram Stoker. The Guinness Storehouse is Dublin s most popular attraction, and it s a must-visit for beer lovers. The Storehouse covers seven floors surrounding a glass atrium shaped like a pint of Guinness. Inside you ll also find a copy of the 9,000 year lease signed by Arthur Guinness on the brewery site - they won t be going anywhere for a while! Grafton Street is one of the main shopping areas in Dublin. You re likely to find lots of musicians, buskers, and performers along here, plus you get a good vantage point of The Spire. Prior to the establishment of Glasnevin Cemetery, Irish Catholics had no place of their own to bury their dead. This burial ground gave both Irish Catholics and Protestants a place where they could give their dead dignified burial, and it has since become the resting place for people of all religions and non religions. The Old Jameson Distillery is the original site where Jameson Irish Whiskey was distilled until 1971. It is now a visitor centre that offers both guided tours and whiskey tastings. Temple Bar is an area known for its lively nightlife. Located on the southbank of the River Liffey, you ll find all sorts of pubs playing live music once the sun goes down. There s also one pub in Temple Bar, called The Temple Bar, but don t let that confuse you. And that s a wrap for our time in Dublin! Where rivers meet the ocean, coastlines tend to bend either inward or outward, creating estuaries and deltas. But how do they get those shapes? Here are some keywords/phrases to get your googling started: – delta: the piled-up sediment (typically triangular, or greek-letter-delta-shaped) deposited by a river as it flows into a larger body of water – estuary: a partially enclosed body of brackish (part salt, part fresh) water that connects one or more ocean-bound streams/rivers to the open sea. Geologists classify estuaries into four basic types (bar-built, coastal plain/drowned river, tectonic, and fjord), based on the geologic processes that formed them. – ice age: this is a term that geologists use a little differently than non-scientists. Geologically speaking, an ice age is a fairly long period (~100-300 million years) of relatively cold temperatures on Earth. Within these long periods of time, the climate warms and cools lots of times, causing the ice sheets to retreat and advance; geologists refer to the colder time intervals as "glacials" and the warmer periods as "interglacials". We are currently in an "interglacial" phase (that started ~15,000 years ago) of an ice age that started ~2.6 million years ago, but because that s kind of complicated, we just say "the end of the last ice age" when what we really mean is "the end of the last glacial cycle of the current ice age." – marine transgression / marine regression: on the surface, these are just fancy ways of talking about sea level going up and down. But for geologists, "transgression" and "regression" are more useful, because land sometimes goes up and down too. For example, if movement along a tectonic fault causes part of the coast to drop below sea level, it might get flooded, but it wouldn t be accurate to attribute the flooding to sea level rise. So geologists describe the situation as "marine transgression" instead.
