After a whirlwind day of tours the previous day, Audrey and my parents decided to have a chill day back in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile while I ventured off to explore some lagoons, salt flats, flamingo reserves and the altiplano in the Atacama desert. The following is a list of the places I visited: Salar de Atacama (Atacama Salt Flats) Laguna Chaxa (Chaxa Lagoon) Pueblo de Toconao Observación de Flamencos (Flamingo Reserve) Pueblo de Socaire Laguna Miscanti y meñique Travel Adventures in the Atacama Desert: Altiplano Lagoons & Flamingo Reserve Travel Video Transcript: Good morning everyone. Today you ll notice I m not traveling with Audrey or my parents. Yesterday we did a marathon session of 13 hours of tours. So understandably they are back at home resting. But today I m going to go out and show some different areas in and around San Pedro de Atacama. And these are different from what we did before. We re going to be focusing on lagoons and the altiplano and we re also going to be visiting a Salt Flat. So lots of cool stuff planned for today. Something else I ve really enjoyed about the tours here is the fact they ve all left really early in the morning. That s been awesome for photography because of the nice soft light in the morning and also great for spotting wildlife. Ah, estoy llena. Breakfast was awesome. I m totally stuffed. Today we had omelettes and we also had bread and we had Carlitos again so it was a really good meal and now we re ready to move on. On both days of our tour we decided to go with a company called Grado diez - Grado 10. And I thought I d share the thought process behind that. So number one the vehicles are a lot bigger than the typical ones plying these roads. A lot of the vehicles that you ll see on these tours are little minivans and they tend to have problems sometimes on these off-roads. So taking a big truck was really good. And the other reason we decided to go with this company too was because of the awesome windows on this vehicle. This is like a safari truck so you know the tour cost a little bit more and we did get a few extra things. Like we had a really nice breakfast, we had on the first day we had pancakes, we had really nice juice, coffee, bread. And today we had omelets. I ve noticed on other cheaper tours you get a lot more of a simple breakfast. It is just like bread and maybe juice and that is it. So this was a really good choice for us. It cost a little bit more but you know sometimes the extra comfort is worth paying for. Next up is the flamingo reserve. Time to go spot some flamingos. Something about the tour today to really keep in mind is that the elevation does go above 4000 meters above sea level. So that means that altitude sickness can be an issue and also getting a sunburn is very common in this type of weather because you re up so high, so you really really need to slather on that sunscreen. Alright, so that marks the end of the tour. The highlight was definitely the flamingo reserve and the salt flats. This is part of our Travel in Chile series. Snap a chalk line across the fascia, creating the proper pitch toward the downspout end. 2. Measure the fascia to determine the length of the gutter. 3. Apply gutter sealant to an end cap, then press the cap onto one end of the gutter. 4. Secure the end cap to the gutter with a crimping tool. 5. Use a hacksaw and tin snips to cut the gutter to length. 6. Use a hammer and a cold chisel (or a hole saw) to cut a round hole in the gutter for a downspout outlet. 7. Apply gutter sealant to the flange of the downspout outlet, then screw the outlet to the hole in the gutter. 8. Temporarily screw the gutter to the fascia, positioning it about 2 inches below the chalk line. 9. Install hanging brackets onto the gutter, positioning one in front of each rafter. 10. Raise the gutter to the chalk line and fasten each hanging bracket by screwing through the fascia and into the rafter tail. 11. Set two 2-inch-thick concrete pavers on the ground directly below the downspout outlet. 12. Set a rain barrel on top of the concrete pavers. 13. Use a hacksaw to cut and assemble the downspout and elbows. 14. Screw the upper end of the downspout to the downspout outlet protruding from the gutter. 15. Fasten the downspout to the house with mounting straps. 16. Install a diverter in the downspout, positioning it even with the top of the rain barrel. 17. Attach a short length of downspout to the underside of the diverter. 18. Connect the diverter s flexible hose to the port on the side of the rain barrel. Shopping List for How to Make Maple Syrup: - Hookless aluminum spout - Aluminum bucket - Aluminum bucket lid - Large stainless-steel vat or cooking pot - Maple syrup hydrometer - Empty syrup bottle Tools for How to Make Maple Syrup: - Drill (power or hand) - 5/16-inch drill bit - Hammer - Coffee filters Steps for How to Make Maple Syrup: 1. Find a maple tree that has grown to an appropriate size. No smaller than 10 inches in diameter for one tap, 18 inches for two taps. 2. Using a drill and 5/16-inch drill bit, drill into the tree about 1_ inch deep at an angle so that the sap can flow out. 3. Take the hookless aluminum spout and tap it into the new hole until it’s secure. 4. Place the aluminum bucket onto the spout. 5. Place the aluminum bucket lid on top to keep out animals, rain, and snow. 6. When the sap is at its peak flow, empty the buckets once or twice a day. 7. When all the sap is collected, transfer it to your pot and boil it. 8. Put some of the syrup into a cup to test it using the hydrometer. 9. Immerse the thermometer into the test cup until it reaches the hot marking on the hydrometer. 10. Measurements may vary when using a hydrometer, so check instructions for your specific hydrometer. 11. Pour syrup through a filter (like a coffee filter) to get rid of niter (sediment) and collect it in a different pot or pan. 12. Pour syrup into a bottle and it is ready to use. Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva creates a backyard chicken coop for a homeowner in Connecticut in Build It (See below for steps.) SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Steps for How to Build a Chicken Coop: 1. Stain the sheets of T1-11 and allow to dry. 2. Place two sheets of T1-11 on top of each other and ensure they are even on all sides. Use a track saw to cut the roofline of the plywood at a 45-degree angle on both sheets at once. 3. Remove one sheet and then, using a jigsaw, cut a small square opening for the sliding coop door into a plywood sheet. For all the doors, the cutouts will later be reattached as the door. 4. On the next sheet, cut an opening for the small entrance door, using the jigsaw. 5. Cut a third sheet of T1-11 to form the side walls. On one of them, cut a large opening for the egg door, using a jigsaw. The other side wall will remain uncut. 6. Cut two of the 4x4 posts to the desired length, then match the angle of the roof using a miter saw for both steps. 7. Use a driver to drive in 1 5/8-inch ceramic screws to attach the posts to the plywood sheeting. 8. Use a piece of 2x4 at the bottom and the top of the coop to give it additional support. Attach these using ceramic screws, and fasten them using a driver. 9. Construct the opposite gable end, repeating the same steps. 10. Connect the two gable ends using 2x4s, and attach one of the side walls. 11. To form the rafters, screw in a 2x4 ridge beam and 2x4 purlins (parallel roof framing), using a driver and 3-inch ceramic screws. 12. Finish the framing by attaching additional 2x4s to the base of the front and back gable walls, using 3-inch ceramic screws. 13. Then, attach two more perpendicular 2x4 joists to form the floor support for the coop with 3-inch ceramic screws 14. To form the floor, use the _-inch exterior plywood and cut out the corners to match the posts using a jigsaw. 15. Fasten the plywood floor by driving 1 5/8-inch screws into the floor joists. 16. Attach the cutout door pieces to the plywood exterior sheets of the structure using hardware of your choice. Do this by driving provided screws into the hardware. 17. Attach the chicken door by threading a rope through a pulley at the top of the door. Then attach the rope to an eyelet on the chicken door. The other end of the rope should be linked to a hook at the opposite end. A track for the door can be made using scrap wood. 18. Attach the final side wall using 1 5/8-inch ceramic screws. 19. Build a nesting box to your desired dimensions using plywood and 2x4s. 20. Cut cellular PVC trim boards to match the angles of the coop, using a miter saw. 21. Attach the PVC trim boards to the exterior of the coop using a hammer and stainless-steel trim nails. 22. Attach _-inch plywood roof sheathing to the roof structure using a driver and 1 5/8-inch ceramic screws. 23. Lay down a layer of felt paper, and staple in place. 24. Using a hammer and roofing nails, attach the asphalt shingles with a 5-inch reveal to the roof sheathing. 25. Attach 4x4 posts of the coop to a beveled base using a driver and ceramic screws. 26. Attach the beveled base to a 2x12 square using a driver and ceramic screws to keep the coop from sinking into the ground. 27. Create a pen area using pressure-treated 2x4s to desired design. Connect the pen structure using driver and ceramic screws. Include an access door for cleaning the pen. 28. Cover the pen with chicken wire by hammering in construction staples. 29. Dig a trench in the outline of the pen at least 3 inches deep, and place the structure in the trench. This is meant to keep predators from crawling in underneath. 30. Attach the pen structure to the coop structure by driving in screws. 31. Place a piece of 2x12 from the coop door to the pen to serve as a ramp for the chickens. In this video I made a Cleveland Indian chief wahoo for a friend. A piece of wood and 8x11 paper same concept can be applied to any fun project for you or the kids. Quick step by step 1. Find what you want to make 2. Blow it up and print it 3. Cut out the shape 4. Tape it together 5. Trace the paper on the wood which will score the wood 6. Use a pencil to highlight the line scored into the wood 7. Use a jig saw to cut it out 8. Sand the edge 9. And paint away ! Inspired by her childhood home in Nova Scotia, designer Miranda Ogilvie fell in love with this Toronto farmhouse’s East Coast-inspired charm. After a severe fire in 2009, Miranda was determined to revive the house back to its original bones. By rebuilding the traditional details that Miranda loved so much, and incorporating heirloom pieces and antiques, Miranda was able to create a space with vintage character despite its brand new finishes. Reclaimed wood floors and wooden beams offer a rustic feel, while eclectic accessories and a combination of traditional and contemporary furniture bring a sense of patina to the space. Neutral walls provide the perfect backdrop for the eclectic decor. Miranda restored the home’s original staircase, and decorated the bedroom with Scandinavian-inspired decor for a soothing, airy vibe.

Most noticeable, the abrupt drop in ceiling height in the adjacent Dining Room with oddly sized and placed windows along the wall connecting the two rooms. Check the speed of the blower motor on the furnace. If necessary, switch the wires to reduce the blower to its lowest speed. 2. Press a continuous strip of foil tape to all longitudinal seams along straight runs of duct. 3. Use a paintbrush to apply duct mastic to the joints where an elbow connects to a duct. 4. Use a utility knife to cut foil-faced fiberglass insulation to the proper size. 5. Wrap the insulation around the duct, and then pinch the seam closed. Secure the insulation with short strips of foil tape. 6. Apply a long strip of foil tape along the seam in the insulation. Repeat to insulate the remaining ducts. 7. To install preformed duct insulation, start by disconnecting an elbow to expose the end of the duct. 8. Snap a plastic cap onto the duct end, then slip the preformed insulation over the duct. 9. Gently pull the insulation over the entire length of duct. Additional advice was provided by Air Purchases, Inc. [https://www.airpurchases.com/] Richard used mastic paste to seal the joints between ducts, in this case Hard Cast Duct Seal 321 by Carlisle HVAC [https://www.carlislehvac.com/]. He also used Nashua foil tape designed for sealing ducts, manufactured by Berry Plastics Corporation [http://www.nashuatape.com/]. Finally, Richard installed Owens Corning [https://bit.ly/2UxxHf4] 1.5 inch thick fiberglass insulation around the ductwork. This insulation has an FSK foil-facing and provides an R-value of 4.2.
