Mosquito Bay or Bio Bay in Vieques, Puerto Rico is an amazing place. It is the brightest glowing bioluminescent bay in the world. I jumped on a few kayak tours during the night of a new moon and saw this incredible light show. Honestly, it was more amazing that I imagined. I had read a review or two, but wasn t sure if it was worth the trip to the island. It was. The bay is extremely bright, and until now, it was very hard to capture on camera. I recently picked up a Sony a7s which is a beast in low light, and was impressed with that it could capture. This has rarely ever been caught on Camera. The government is doing a good job at keeping this place pristine. In some areas of the world you can jump in, splash around, use gasoline engines, and generally just destroy the ecosystem these little guys live in. Here in Vieques, Puerto Rico, you are not allowed to swim, or use gasoline. Nearby light pollution has to be kept to a minimum, and there give Bio Bay some days off now and again to recover. This is probably why it remains the brightest in the world. High Five for sustainable eco tourism. I wish everywhere was this forward thinking. This was one of my best travel experiences. Like I said, it s worth the trip! To save your life, you need an antidote excreted by a certain species of frog. Unfortunately, only the female frog produces the antidote. The male and female look identical, but the male frog has a distinctive croak. Derek Abbott shows how to use conditional probability to make sure you lick the right frog and get out alive. Kevin O Connor learns how to maintain clothes washers and dryers. (See steps below.) SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Steps for How to Maintain Laundry Appliances: 1. Replace rubber washing machine hoses with braided stainless steel hoses. Install new hoses every five years. 2. Overloading the washer with too many clothes will put undue strain on the washer and its motor, prematurely wearing out parts. 3. Before loading the washer, remove all objects from pockets to prevent them from jamming the machine. 4. Front-loading washers use less water than top loaders, and do a better job of spinning out excess water, which reduces drying time. 5. Note that you must use only HE (high-efficiency) detergent in front-loading machines. 6. To dampen vibration during the spin cycle, set the washing machine on thick rubber vibration pads. 7. To keep your clothes dryer operating at peak efficiency, clean the lint filter every single time you dry a load. 8. If the dryer is connected to a flexible vinyl vent, replace it immediately. Vinyl vents are no longer code compliant. 9. Flexible aluminum-foil dryer vents are lined with corrugations that collect dust and lint. 10. Rigid metal vent pipes are preferred because they re straight and smooth, so there s less chance of lint becoming stuck. 11. Clean the dryer s vent pipe at least once a year to remove all lint buildup. 12. Mobile apps are available for diagnosing and trouble-shooting washer and dryer problems. Tom Silva shows how to quickly divide any length in half, without using math. (See below for steps.) SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Steps for How to Find Measurements Without Math: 1. Measure the width of the board, then choose a slightly larger dimension that s easily divisible by two. For example, if the board measures 37 5/8 inches, round it up to 40 inches. 2. Pull a tape measure diagonally across the board until the 40-inch graduation aligns with the edge of the board. 3. Make a pencil mark at the 20-inch graduation line, which is half of 40. That marks the exact center of the 37 5/8-inch board. 4. You can also find the center using two tape measures. 5. Pull one tape measure across the board from one edge, then pull the second tape from the opposite edge. 6. Find where the point along the tapes where two identical measurements align with each other. That s the exact center of the board. About Ask This Old House TV: Homeowners have a virtual truckload of questions for us on smaller projects, and we re ready to answer. What is a monopoly? It turns out, it s more than just a board game. It s a terrible, terrible economic practice in which giant corporations dominate markets and hurt consumers. Except when it isn t. In some industries, monopolies are the most efficient way to do business. Utilities like electricity, water, and broadband internet access are probably less efficiently delivered in competitive markets. Come along, and let us monopolize your attention for a few minutes.
