Foreign policy is important because it has the potential to affect the largest number of people, but at the same time, it tends to play a minimal role in our perception of the government (unless we’re at war). Foreign policy addresses diplomacy, security, human rights, economics, and the environment at a global scale, and we’re going to talk about how our government has approached each of these policies in the past and which it tends to hold most important. As with all things political, the decisions made in fulfilling these policies can be pretty controversial, especially when considering that the President often has the last word in these issues. So what hidden gems did Clara and Kenneth uncover in Nanjing? There s more food, some ridiculous moments, and The Travel Interns being ridiculous. Here are the things you can do in Nanjing in 48hours. (1) Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall During the first six weeks that Japanese soldiers occupied China’s then-capital Nanjing, they committed extensive acts of violence, including rape, looting and mass executions. The eventual death toll stood at 300,000. Today the victims are memorialised at the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall, which is located in Western Nanjing. (2) Librairie Avant Garde CNN travel called it the most beautiful bookshop in China, and Lonely Planet said ‘the ambience and decor alone certainly deserve a visit’. (3) Sun Yat Sen’s Mausoleum The are 392 steps to Sun Yat Sen’s Mausoleum.Located at Zhongshan Mountain National Park, this area is a forested playground of cultural, historical and scenic spots that span 31 square kilometres. (4) Confucius Temple Square The pedestrian streets outside Confucius Temple (Fuzimiao) are lined with tourist kitsch – souvenir shops stocked floor-to-ceiling with shiny keychains and embroidered coin purses, small stalls selling handphone cases and accessories, and the aroma of smelly tofu punching through the evening. ----------------------- The overnight train from Hangzhou pulls up at Nanjing Train Station shortly after daybreak, and we tumble out into a chilly morning. On the way to our hotel we peer out at streets already bustling – women hawking 豆浆油条 and sesame pastries from pushcarts, breakfast stalls serving up steaming bowls of noodles as the city’s workers start their day. We are on the second leg of our China trip, with 48 hours in this storied city. Nanjing was once a prosperous administrative centre during the Qin dynasty, and China’s capital at the start of the 20th century. But I know it for The Rape of Nanking, the massacre at the hands of Japanese soldiers during World War 2, the title of journalist Iris Chang’s book that has lain in my house for as long as I can remember. Travelling to us is about embracing cultures. Even if it means eating weird things and talking to strangers. Find out what surprises Hangzhou had for The Travel Interns! (Btw Kenneth had a moment :P) Here are the things you can do in Hangzhou in 48hrs. (1) West Lake (西湖, Xī hú) The large man-made lake is representative of the classical beauty of China you’d expect. With beautiful pagodas protruding from the horizon of hills and willow trees, while watching the boats calmly traverse across the waters, West Lake is picturesque from any angle. (2) Zhongshan Middle Road (中山中路, Zhōng shān zhōng lù) The street is bustling with both locals and tourists. It is lined with shop houses and littered with makeshift stalls, which sell teas, silks, trinkets, paintings and traditional snacks. There are plenty of local food options here or you could settle for the familiar McDonald’s or coffee houses. (3) Yunqi Zhujing Scenic Village (云栖竹径, Yún qī zhú jìng) Southwest of West Lake lies a quiet beautiful bamboo forest that is relatively unknown to tourists. The bamboo-lined path here is similar to the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in Kyoto, Japan but just without the crowd! (4) Grandma’s Kitchen (外婆家, Wàipó jiā) Grandma’s Kitchen is a fantastic place to have a taste of Hangzhou cuisine in a comfortable. There are a number of outlets throughout Hangzhou and they’re usually very crowded a few hours into meal service. (5) Meijiawu Tea Village (梅家坞茶村, Méi jiā wù chá cūn) Just a short drive north of Yunqi Zhujing is Hangzhou’s famous Meijiawu Tea Village. This plantation is world-renowned for producing Longjing Tea or Dragon well tea, which is a type of pan-roasted green tea. The village comprises of over 150 teahouses in which tourists can learn and appreciate the production of tea or even tea ceremonies. ----------------------- We arrived in chilly Hangzhou in the late hours of the evening. Immediately after exiting the airport terminal, my throat was ambushed and became slightly irritated by the choking smog. Thankfully, after a few minutes waiting for a cab, my respiratory system became accustomed to the air and all was well. Upon boarding our cab to our hostel, I noticed that the cabbie was shielded by a huge plastic casing, which I can safely assume is to protect the driver from muggers. I tried to tell the driver where to go with whatever poorly strung Chinese phrases I could muster up. We both drew blank stares at each other. Within the first hour of landing in China, I became terribly anxious over the weather, my safety and miscommunicating with the locals. It was going to be an interesting 48 hours in Hangzhou... SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Shopping List for How to Repair Melted Vinyl Siding: - Window screen, used to eliminate reflective solar heat - Adhesive-backed Velcro tape, for securing screen to window - Vinyl siding, used to replace the damaged siding - Aluminum roofing nails, for attaching the vinyl siding Tools List for How to Repair Melted Vinyl Siding: - Hammer Utility knife and combination square, for scribing a cut line onto the vinyl siding - Aviation snips, used to cut vinyl siding - Zip tool, used to lock siding panels together Steps for How to Repair Melted Vinyl Siding: 1. Apply 4-inch-long strips of adhesive-backed Velcro tape to a window screen. 2. Peel off the backing from the tape and stick the screen to the outside of the window sash. 3. Slip your hand behind the siding course immediately above the damaged siding. Slide your hand along the wall to disengage the butt (bottom) edge of the siding. 4. Use a hammer to pull the nails holding the first course of damaged siding to the wall. 5. Pull down on the siding to disengage it from the course below, then remove the damaged piece of siding. 6. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 to remove the remaining damaged siding panels. 7. Measure a new vinyl siding panel to fit along the very bottom of the wall. Scribe the cut line with a combination square and utility knife. 8. Cut the siding along the scribed line with aviation snips. 9. Snap the lowest course of siding into the starter strip fastened along the bottom of the wall. 10. Secure the siding with aluminum nails. Space the nails 12 to 16 inches apart, and tap them through the center of the nailing slots. 11. Be sure to leave the nail heads protruding 1/16 of an inch or so. Don t nail the siding tight to the wall. 12. Where two pieces of siding overlap, use the utility knife to trim the end of the nailing hem and the back edge of the butt edge. 13. Continue to install siding up the wall, one panel at a time. 14. To snap the last-installed siding panel onto the panel above, use a zip tool. 15. Hook the zip tool onto the butt edge of the upper siding panel, then pull down and push in at the same time. 16. Slide your hand and the zip tool along the wall to lock the siding panels together. Inside you ll find impressive works of art done in the cuzqueña style. In the evenings, you can go watch a traditional dance performance at Centro Qosqo. San Blas San Blas is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Cuzco and it is a great area to explore on foot. The neighbourhood is known for its bright blue doors and window shutters, and it has a nice little square with a church and a water fountain. The neighbourhood has some really cool lookout points with great panoramic views of Cuzco, so you ll want to bring your camera. Plaza de Armas is the beating heart of Cuzco. The square is flanked by a Jesuit church and cathedral, and there are also plenty of bars, restaurants, and tour agencies around the perimeter. During the day you ll find locals and tourists hanging out in the square, and if you get lucky, you might just encounter a performance followed by a demonstration like we did. The Inca Museum is one of the main museums in town and it has rooms dedicated to different periods of Inca and Spanish history. You can also see women weaving rugs and tapestries by hand in the central courtyard. Qurikancha was an Inca temple built to the Sun God, Inti, and it is believed that the walls of this temple were once covered in sheets of gold. If the temple looks like it has various layers of construction, that s because when the Spaniards arrived, they demolished the original temple and used the foundations to build the Church of Santo Domingo on the site. The Church of the Society of Jesus is a historic Jesuit church. It s worth a quick visit if you re in the area. Templo de la Merced is another church located one block from Plaza de Armas, and it contains the tomb of two famous conquistadors. And that s a wrap for Cuzco!
