Ask This Old House plumbing expert Richard Trethewey gives a history lesson on bath fixtures and piping. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Steps: 1. Richard explains the current system most homeowners have in their bathrooms. It’s a bath, waste and overflow system. There is a drain which includes a stopper, activated by either a lever or a foot pedal in the drain. The system also includes an overflow. That is a hole above the drainage pipe in the side of the tub. If the tub ever gets too high, the water will begin to seep down the drain and not flood the house. Richard then shows Kevin the P-Trap. A bit of water sits in the trap at all times to keep sewer gas from flowing into the house. 2. Next, Richard goes back in time to see how one of the first plumbed bathtub functioned. The spout, hot and cold valves sat on a claw foot or Essex tub. Richard shows Kevin how the drain worked by pulling up a stopper at tub level. 3. Richard then shows Kevin a drum trap. The drum trap works on the same principle as the P-trap. A bit of water stays inside to prevent sewer gas from coming back inside. However, it was so large and inaccessible, hair and other debris could fill up inside. Using a snake would not be able to clear it out either. A drain snake may actually pope a hole in the lead-based drum trap because lead is so soft. Richard goes on to explain the fittings on the drum trap were also made with lead and actually melted and hardened onsite in the homes. 4. Finally, Richard shows off old piping. Lead pipes were once very common in plumbing. Lead was followed by brass fittings and eventually the more modern copper and PEX tubing. Before doing any electrical work, always turn off the power at the circuit breaker. 2. Disconnect and remove the current light fixture. 3. Attach the the ground wire of the new fixture to the incoming ground wire, and if using a metal box, to the ground screw on the electrical box. 4. Splice all the neutral wires together- from the power supply, the white from the fixture, and the white wire from the wireless module- and cover with a wire nut. 5. Then, splice the black wire from the module to the black wire from the power supply and cover with a wire nut. 6. Finally, splice the black wire from the fixture with the red wire from the wireless module and cover with a wire nut. 7. Attach the light fixture to the electrical box following the manufacturer’s instructions. 8. The light switch mounts to the wall at 48” to center, preferably inside a doorway. It does not require any wiring or batteries. Restore power at the circuit panel and test. A couple years ago in Germany, I went to an amazing and strange place in Europa Park. Of all the weird restaurants I ve been to while travelling, this one if definitely in the Top 5. It s a Rollercoaster Restaurant called Food Loop. How it works, is you order on a touch screen panel at your table. The kitchen receives your order, and prepares the food. Then the food is placed on a conveyor belt and is transported high above all the restaurant tables. There, it is sorted and put onto roller coaster tracks which loop, spin, twist, to the tables below. It s located inside Europa Park, which makes it one of the biggest amusement parks in the Europe. There are 13 rollercoasters here, and the park gets over 50,000 visitors a day. I had never heard of this unique restaurant in Germany before arriving, it was a surprise for us both. Happy we could put a GoPro on a dish to get a POV as well. It looks like a manipulative promise of sexual affection that, at the last moment, leaves its targets confused and humiliated. In our sadness, back home alone after the nightclub or the party, we may rail against the flirt for ‘only’ flirting, when it had appeared there would be so much more. But this kind of pattern represents only one, unedifying and regrettable possibility around flirting. At its best, flirting can be a vital social process that generously lends us reassurance and freely redistributes confidence and self-esteem. The task is not to stop flirting, but to learn how better to practice its most honourable versions. Architect Darcie Watson transforms a former B&B into a striking modern home that doesn’t shut the door on its past. See how she mixed old with the new using carefully curated pieces and impressive millwork. Originally built in 1905, the home’s rooms were sub-divided into separate bedrooms. So, Darcie created an open-concept space by putting in structural beams. In the kitchen, a salvaged American chestnut island adds a rustic feel to the sleek design aesthetic of the Valcucine system. Deep lower cabinets and white glass flip-up cabinet doors with interchangeable inserts offer flexibility and smart storage. A unit that houses the TV transitions the living room into the handsome home office where dark walls capture the mood of a traditional library. The powder room’s floors and walls are clad in circa-1905 encaustic tiles, making a unique and unexpected statement.
