Exploring Mexico is one of my new hobbies. The Panteon Ingles in Real del Monte, Hidalgo is an old British Cemetery... in Mexico. 200 years ago, there was a very famous British Mine nearby, many miners came from their home country to work here, and a special graveyard was built to accommodate them. There are many stories surrounding this place, and symbolism is scattered throughout. It s a great adventure for people who love urbex, or abandoned places. My friend Lola told me about this location, and I visited with her and another of her friends. We had heard there was a caretaker we could speak to, and we did end up finding her there. Maria del Carmen Hernández Skewes (which... I had a hard time remembering) is now in charge of the Panteon, but her father was the one who received most of the fame. Don Chencho was made an official citizen of Britain by Queen Elizabeth II for his outstanding work taking care of the Cemetery during the time the mine was active, and now he is buried facing Britain (like all the other miners) in the Graveyard. If you re wondering what some of the best things to do are around Pachuca, and urban exploration is interesting for you... this place is worth checking out. It s placed high on a hill looking over Real de Monte, with tall cedar and pine trees scattered throughout. It was really quite beautiful, in a slightly creepy way. I imagine it would be absolutely stunning at sunrise or sunset.
