Ask This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey helps a homeowner figure out why one of her radiators is not working. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Richard identified that the 1950s era home he visited was piped with a diverter tee setup, where a single, combined supply and return line runs from the boiler.In part of Richard’s explanation on the radiator, he explained the diverter tee in the dual piping to each radiator. The diverter tee slow-stems the flow of water at one end, increasing the back pressure and forcing the water through the first pipe and into the radiator. Time: varies Cost: varies Skill Level: Difficult Steps: 1. Richard goes over some of the places to check when adequate heat is not being delivered from a forced hot water heating system. 2. In this home, which means the water heats up in the boiler, goes up through the pipes, through the radiators, gives off heat to the room, and falls back down to the boiler to be heated again. That process is helped via an electric circulator pump which can be tested to ensure it is working properly. 3. With any forced hot water system, there must be the right amount of water pressure going into the boiler and to the pipes. To help that, a pressure reducing valve lessens the amount of water pressure from the city to the boiler. The pressure reducing valve can be tested and a pressure gauge on the boiler will also indicate system pressure. 4. An expansion tank to reduces the stress on the system. The top portion is filled with water and the bottom air under pressure. In between the two, is a neoprene diaphragm to act as a shock absorber to the pressure. If that diaphragm fails, it can cause problems with the system. 5. If only one radiator is failing to give off heat, check the air valve to determine if there is any excess air in the system. 6. Check the shut off valve going in to the radiator, which may have been turned off for service or an attempt at zoning. Richard showed 3/4-inch copper monoflo tees. Those can be found at local home centers or plumbing supply stores. After diagnosing a hand valve that was inadvertently turned off, Richard used the Flir One infrared camera attachment for a smart phone manufactured by Flir [https://www.flir.com/] to confirm that heat was reaching all parts of the radiator. For cutting through metal, use either a hack saw, which can accept a 10” or 12” blade, or a mini-hack saw, designed for cutting in tight areas. Tom shows off a hack saw to cut through all kinds of metal. 2. To change the blade on a hack saw, loosen the wing nut at the base and extending the bow to your desired length. Insert the new blade and tighten the wing nut. Be sure to put the teeth facing away from the handle. 3. When cutting through drywall, use a jab saw. Place the piercing tip on the drywall and then hit the handle with the palm of your hand to drive it into the drywall. Once the saw is in the material, you can use it to cut. 4. A flush cut saw can cut screws or dowels flush to the material and the handles are often reversible. 5. A double edge pull saw has a flexible blade that can sit flat on material and is can be used to cut trim or casing when patching flooring. Use the flooring as a height gauge. Cut the trim to allow the flooring to slide underneath. 6. A miter saw and miter box can be used for straight cuts and to cut angles. 7. A traditional a hand saw can be used for rip cuts and cross cuts. The more teeth on a blade, the finer the cut will be. Finer blades are used for cross-cutting, coarser blade is used for ripping wood. 8. For the most control, it’s important to hold your body in front of the blade when cutting and line up your shoulder and hand should line up. Celebrity designer Jeremiah Brent (The Rachel Zoe Project and The View) used color and texture to lend warmth and intimacy to a cookie-cutter home in NYC s the West Village. Despite the frequent television appearances and occasional magazine feature on his sweet family, Jeremiah Brent remains first and foremost a designer. His passion for interiors is palpable. Brent is the host of OWN’s Home Made Simple and will star in TLC’s Nate & Jeremiah By Design with husband Nate Berkus. Naturally, the decorator put his own personal design beliefs to use in the overhaul of a spare 2,500-square-foot New York apartment for a Nicaraguan family that values both function and style. First on the agenda: creating a space that felt unique to the clients while maximizing the space to accommodate their lifestyle. Brent incorporated paneling along the ceiling, which imparts subtle texture and a soothing sense of warmth in a dining nook off the kitchen, a space that’s versatile enough to serve as dinner-party site and reading perch. He also built bookcases along one wall and a hallway that you can close off for privacy, and installed glass-and-iron doors to create a moody, inviting foyer that he says “grounds you when you walk in the door.” And a room Brent refers to as the “James Bond office” doubles as a guest room and is enclosed by glass doors that, with the touch of a button, go cloudy to establish privacy for visitors. Another element that made the apartment’s transformation possible was Brent’s innovative use of saturated hues. He continued the shade onto the drapery and the sofa’s upholstery to create a cohesive cocooning effect. A pair of vintage Joseph-André Motte chairs reupholstered in a burnt-orange Lee Jofa velvet add a layer of sumptuousness that deepens the cozy feel. The sense of continuity carries into a muted gray guest room, a space that underscores both the atmosphere of refuge that pervades the residence and the personality of the family that lives there. A table by Andrianna Shamaris anchors the dining nook off the kitchen, where vintage 1950s school chairs sit across from a banquette topped with cushions upholstered in a Pierre Frey fabric. A mirrored backsplash adds contemporary flair to the built-in bookshelves Brent installed along the wall opposite the dining nook. In the living room, the custom sofa is upholstered in an indigo Schumacher fabric that coordinates with the walls and drapery, which is a gauzy Nate Berkus for Fabricut textile. A pair of vintage Joseph-André Motte chairs are reupholstered in a burnt-orange velvet from Lee Jofa. The custom console conceals a flat-screen television that rises up from a flap in the piece’s uppermost surface. The guest room is dominated by a Room & Board bed dressed in cozy linens; the chair is from Galerie Bachman, and the nightstands are by Interlude Home. To reference the wall of windows in the living room, Brent installed iron-and-glass doors off the kitchen to create an intimate entry. “It’s a really nice space that grounds you when you walk in the door,” he says. The Canadian Food Challenge! My homies Exploring with Josh and Exploring with Cody were in Mexico City (my new stomping ground) so I thought I d surprise them with a Eating Canadian Food Challenge. We met up with my friend Ale Ivanova, and I pulled all the East Coast Canada treats out of my closet for this special occasion. Not all of them are delicious, which made it a bit funny. That s the point of a challenge! I m from the province of New Brunswick, and some of these are specialties from that area of the country. We call it the Maritimes, or Atlantic Canada. Here are the things we ate: Chicken Bones - A Cinnamon and chocolate candy that people eat during Christmas. Bloody Caesar - A Hangover drink with Clamato Juice (Clam+Tomato), vokda, and a bunch of other spices. Dulse - A famous red seaweed that is dried on the shores of the ocean. Very salty, very fishy. Maple Cream - A block of maple sugar, which is usually soft. This one is expired. Poutine - aka Fat Salad. Maybe Canada s most famous dish.
