In March 2011, a massive earthquake and resulting tsunami ravaged Japan s eastern coast. At the time, Chris Robinson was in the middle of a business meeting, but the subject of his meeting immediately turned to ways of helping people in similar disasters. He decided right then and there to build an escape pod based on a sturdy spherical design. Complete with an electric motor and solar panels, Robinson s "tsunami ball" would act as a mini safety pod, allowing people to navigate over short distances during an inland tsunami. Without any prior shipbuilding experience, he launched himself into the project—sometimes, the will to build and learn trumps any expertise. Los Cabos is much more than it seems! Cajafresca and I were sent on a mission to vlog and explore the natural side of Baja California Sur, Mexico. This area is world famous for all-inclusive hotels, partying, and over consumption of tequila. We vowed not to get distracted by the obvious fun, and explore the world famous natural attractions; Whale Watching, Bird Watching, Snorkeling with Whale Sharks... Tons of stuff to do. This trip was an adventure. Big love to Grupo Presidente, Interjet, and the Holiday Inn Los Cabos for creating this project for us. Awesome brands to check out. First stop was bird watching and exploring Estero San Jose which was right beside our hotel (here: https://bit.ly/HIRLosCabos) I was amazed how many species there are here! It s a very important stopping point for many of the migratory species travelling from Northern North America, to the south. There were quiet a few Canadian birds I recognized as well. This was cut short by a turtle sighting. My personal highlight Whale watching was incredible. I ve had been a few times in Canada, but this was one of the best experiences I ve had with these animals. Since the Gulf of California is basically a crack in the earth, the beaches drop off very quickly into the depths. Whales can get very close to shore allowing awesome viewing (even from the beach) We went near Cabo San Lucas, wish I could have spent more time there. Swimming with Whale Sharks was almost an extreme sport. They are the biggest fish in the world, and they eat plankton, one of the smallest. They move deceptively fast despite their slow movements. When swimming with them, the boat drops you off slight in front of them. Your job is to slide into the water, find the shark, and try to keep up. Today, Carrie Anne is going to take a look at how those transistors we talked about last episode can be used to perform complex actions. With the just two states, on and off, the flow of electricity can be used to perform a number of logical operations, which are guided by a branch of mathematics called Boolean Algebra. We’re going to focus on three fundamental operations - NOT, AND, and OR - and show how they were created in a series of really useful circuits. And its these simple electrical circuits that lay the groundwork for our much more complex machines. *CORRECTION* AT 1:27 the graph says "Quinary System" but then the graph shows 10 possible states - which is actually decimal. Technically, there should be only 5 possible values there, but the overall concept is still the same. In Chungju, South Korea, Bong-Seok Kang and his family carry on a generations-long tradition of a sweeter sort than most: they make yeot, a taffy-like candy that dates back more than 1,000 years. Originally a treat for the privileged classes, the stretchy confection is more popular than ever among everyone, and Kang’s authentic version is based on a 140-year-old family recipe. Hand-pulling the candy to get the perfect texture and making sure that his yeot is never too sweet is a legacy of craftsmanship that Kang values highly, and all it takes is one bite to see why.
