In this episode of Crash Course Film History, Craig talks to us about the Lumiere brothers, their invention of the Cinematographe, and the idea of projecting a movie to an audience. *** Images used are in the public domain or purchased from ThinkStock. Join us as we visit Varanasi city in this travel guide featuring the best things to do in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Varanasi (also known as Benares, Banaras and/or Kashi) is the spiritual capital of India. As the holiest of seven sacred cities in Hinduism and Jainism you find many people from all over India visiting as well as tourists. In terms of attractions in Varanasi it is a destination worth visiting for the experience rather than a checklist of places to visit. Coming to the various ghats by day and night reveals what Varanasi is all about. You can take a boat ride in the morning for sunrise or later in the evening for sunset but the rest of the time I d recommend just walking along the ghats and getting lost in the maze of back alleys in the old part of the city. At night be sure to check out the many evening performances and also it is worth visiting a burning ghat but remember to be respectful by putting away your camera. Things to do in Varanasi Travel Guide: 1) Ganga Aarti (श्री गंगा आरती) performance at night in Varanasi where Brahmans hold large bowls of fire in their hands while offering holy mantras to river Ganges, Shiva (Hindu God of destruction), Surya (Sun God) and the universe 2) Dashashwamedh Ghat (दशाश्वमेध घाट) main ghat on the Ganga River 3) Wandering around in back-alleys in the old city quarter of Varanasi 4) Manikarnika Ghat (मणिकर्णिका घाट) burning ghat where bodies are cremated along the Ganges River 5) Boat ride in Varanasi on the Ganges River either for sunrise or sunset 6) Visiting the many ghats in Varanasi during different times of the day and in the evening GEAR WE USE Olympus OM-D E-M5 II: http://amzn.to/1OchS7t Canon G7X: http://amzn.to/1YdjsYX Olympus 14-150mm II Lens: http://amzn.to/1Y79zeM Rode Video Mic GO: http://amzn.to/1WDKtVM Joby Gorilla Pod: http://amzn.to/1PgoY5F SanDisk 16GB Extreme Pro: http://amzn.to/25KEErs SOCIAL MEDIA & TRAVEL BLOGS AUDREY: blog: http://thatbackpacker.com/ instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thatbackpacker/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thatbackpacker twitter: https://twitter.com/ThatBackpacker SAMUEL: blog: http://nomadicsamuel.com/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nomadicsamuel twitter: https://twitter.com/NomadicSamuel instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadicsamuel/ Our visit Varanasi travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a ghats guide, burning ghats, fascinating temples and the city by day and evening when Varanasi comes alive at night with performances. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities you won t find in a typical Varanasi tourism brochure, Varanasi city tour or Varanasi itinerary. Varanasi City Guide | India Travel Video transcript: Alright guys it is our second last destination here in India. We have finally made it to Varanasi (वाराणसी) & this is our first morning exploring the ghats. Ghats is the word used to describe the steps that lead down to the river’s edge. There are a total of 87 ghats in Varanasi (वाराणसी), some bigger than others, but we just focused on a handful, starting at Dashashwamedh Ghat (दशाश्वमेध घाट) & working our way down. Along the way we saw former palaces built by royal families, cheap guesthouses that cater to backpackers & plenty of temples. As lively as the Ganges is by day, we also made time to visit by night so we could watch the Ganga Aarti ceremony. This is a fire worship ceremony that takes place at Dashashwamedh Ghat (दशाश्वमेध घाट), with lots of singing, chanting, burning candles and billowing incense. You can watch the ceremony from the steps or aboard the boats for a small fee arriving early to claim a spot as it gets busy. So one of my favorite things to do here in Varanasi (वाराणसी) is just wander around like go exploring through the old town is just like a labyrinth, it is like a maze. There is so much people watching. There is a lot of animals & cows. There is also a lot of opportunity to shop as well. Lastly, it wouldn’t have been a proper trip to Varanasi (वाराणसी) without taking a boat ride down the Ganges River. We were up before the crack of dawn to meet our boatman, and our early morning wake up call was rewarded with one of the best sunrises we saw in India. So we re wrapping things up here in Varanasi (वाराणसी) at the train station. We ve done all of our train travel in India by trains so it is kind of appropriate that our very last journey to Kolkata is by train. This is part of our Travel in India video series showcasing Indian food, Indian culture and Indian cuisine. Music in this video courtesy of Joakim Karud http://youtube.com/joakimkarud

I have the photic sneeze reflex so I sneeze when I look at bright light. Check out 23andMe: http://ve42.co/23andme *So technically the single nucleotide swap (C instead of T) is not actually in a gene per se but in an intergenic region on chromosome 2. It s also not clear exactly how this affects physiology or causes the sun sneeze but there is correlative evidence that every copy of this single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) is associated with a 1.3x increase in likelihood of having the photic sneeze reflex. I have wanted to make a video about sun-sneezing for a long time. It is something I ve experienced my whole life. When I go from a dark room indoors into full sunlight I invariably sneeze. I thought everyone did it. So my original question was why do people sneeze when they see bright light? That led me to consider what possible evolutionary advantages there could be to sneezing in sunlight. The obvious advantage to me is that sunlight kills pathogens of which there may be many in your snot or mucus. So sneezing in sunshine is a much better idea than sneezing inside a dark, damp cave where you may be living. Cine Opera was one of the most beautiful theatres in Mexico City. Now it s falling to pieces, and is one the most difficult abandoned buildings to enter in CDMX. It has been on my top 5 list for a long time, and it finally were able to vlog it and go exploring. It was opened in 1949 as a movie theatre to show films from around the world to the rich, and for 40 years it did that. In 1985 a giant earthquake rocked the city, destroying hundreds of buildings, and cracking the main screen of the theatre. After, it was a music venue for concerts for 15 years before an "Altercation" on stage with the English Gothic Rock band Bauhaus closed it permanently. There is no more information I can find about what happened. How can a band close a place this beautiful permanently? This place has 24 hour security, steel bar fences, and locks on all the doors.... I never thought I d get in. I had met some friends, La Catapixia who also do urban exploration in Mexico City. We had seen each others videos of other cool locations like the abandoned condominium, Insurgentes 300, and Acropolis the abandoned shopping mall. They got us into to the abandoned cinema, and we went exploring together. We were surprised to see that they have cleaned the interior quite a bit. The movie theatre seats were all cleared out, as well as most of the trash. There are plans to renovate it into a cultural centre, and I hope they do. Abandoned or not, it s still a beautiful place. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ϟ My Camera Gear ϟ Main Camera: http://geni.us/MyCamera My Favourite Lens: http://geni.us/Sony1635mm My 2nd Favourite Lens: http://geni.us/Sony90mm Low Light/Portrait Lens: http://geni.us/Sony55mm Love this Microphone: http://geni.us/RODEMic My SD Cards: http://geni.us/SanDiskPRO Camera Clips: http://geni.us/PDClip Cool Gadget to switch Lenses: http://geni.us/PDLensKit My Camera Strap: http://geni.us/PDStrap Keeping Safe on Rainy Days: http://geni.us/PDRainShell Great Tripod with a Funny Name: http://geni.us/Tripod This new Gimbal I love: http://geni.us/NewGimbal My Flying Camera: http://geni.us/DJI4K ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ♥ Friends ♥ Big Love to my friends La Catapixia. I am so beyond excited to have partnered up with Home Depot creating this DIY pallet dog bed for my baby girl Cali Bella Rodriguez (yes she has a full name). This DIY dog bed is absolutely perfect for anyone that has a dergie derg that stays by your side at all times like my girl. Since she has a million places to sleep in the house, I thought it was a rad idea to make a movable dog bed so I can scoot her near me while I’m working in my garage. I can’t get over the customization you can do to this thing! This was the perfect blend of industrial meets boho/rustic? Is that even a thing? Well now it is. I hope you all enjoyed this week’s video! Thank you Home Depot for partnering up with me to create this beautiful DIY dog bed for Cal. Thank you Ryobi for being so dope and gifting me these power tools! Still on a high from that. Drop a comment down below of what other LARGER projects you d like to see me try. Here s his blog: http://www.empiricalzeal.com The universe is expanding – this we know from looking at red shifts of distant galaxies – but the acceleration of the universe s expansion is harder to measure. Just 50,000-100,000 years ago, Earth was home to three or four separate human species, including our most famous cousins: the Neanderthals. New research has shown that Neanderthals were not the brutish, unintelligent cavemen that cartoons make them out to be. They were creative, smart, social, and perhaps even had complex language. So why did they go extinct as soon as Homo sapiens moved into their territory? Does any trace of them live on today? Why don’t we have Neanderthal neighbors? ----------- REFERENCES: Papagianni, Dimitra, and Michael A. Morse. The Neanderthals Rediscovered: How Modern Science Is Rewriting Their Story.
