The colossal geometric monuments found at Giza and elsewhere in Egypt are some of Earth’s most impressive constructions. Pyramids are truly wonders of the ancient and modern world. But when the pyramids were built, the ancient Egyptians hadn’t invented the wheel, developed bronze tools, or discovered pi. How were they able to stack two million stone blocks, each weighing more than two tons, into precise geometric alignments that would survive more than 4,000 years and capture the imaginations of explorers throughout history? They did it the same way we always have: by trial and error. The true history of the pyramids is one of experimentation and science, not magic… or aliens. ----------- REFERENCES: Lehner, M. (1997). This abandoned flour factory in Mexico City was sent to a Urbex friend of mine, La Catapixia, by one of his subscribers. We jumped at the chance to explore this place. On google maps it looked amazing, but we didn t know how to enter. The plan would be to show up and find out. It would be an adventure. The story of this abandoned building is that it exploded. Pretty dramatic right? If you think about what a flour factory does, it would receive bulk shipments of wheat, and then use a grinder to pulverize it into powder for your baking pleasure! If the building had poor ventilation, this powder would hang in the air. Why is that a problem? Google "Flour Explosion" and you ll find out. Kaboom. The history of this place is a bit confusing. We were told by a few sources it had been abandoned for 50 years, but found paperwork inside dated as recently as 2003. The guard there didn t know too much about the place, his job was to just chill and keep people out who didn t have permission. There s a lot of abandoned places around CDMX, this one seems to get very little attention despite being absolutely beautiful. The grain silos especially, so happy we brought the drone (DJI MAVIC) along to shoot them from the air. It s been a while since I ve posted an exploring vlog, but we ve been doing a lot of filming as we travel around Mexico. Expect some more fun stuff soon. Russia went and had a revolution in 1917 and cinema was a big part of its aftermath. Even though film stock was hard to come by, we saw the first film school started, and the study of film became hugely important. Russian filmmakers started trying to understand the power of the cut itself, thus developing a theory of filmmaking based solely around the juxtaposition of images: Soviet Montage. In this episode of Crash Course Film History, Craig talks us through some of the filmic things going on in post-revolution era Russia. When natural builder Corwin Mandel received an eviction notice, he knew it was the perfect time to get started on building his own tiny house. With limited finance though, he set about using reclaimed materials to turn an old caravan he had purchased into an artistic and cosy small home on wheels. Scientists have JUST published this new observation. On January 4th, 2017 they detected the merger of two black holes 3 billion light-years away. This marks the furthest detection they ve been able to make and increases confidence that these events will be seen with increasing frequency as the LIGO interferometers become more sensitive to low amplitude gravitational waves (as sources of noise are eliminated). So, the stars made the elements, we re all made of star stuff, etc. But what does all this mean? This week Emily Graslie teaches you how the formation of chemical elements in the bellies of the earliest stars made life as we know it possible. Namely, we ll be learning about lowly carbon, which it turns out, is kind of a superhero when it comes to the rise of complexity. Travel back to Ancient Rome to find out what life was like for the Vestal Virgins, the priestesses who kept vigil over the flame of Vesta. -- In ancient Rome, Vestal Virgins were tasked with keeping vigil over the flame of Vesta, the virgin goddess of the hearth. The flame represented two things: the continuation of Rome as a power in the world and the continuing virginity of Vesta’s priestesses. But what was life really like for these Vestal Virgins? Once again we were out of food onboard, which led us to altering course to Hamilton Island. What a spot! It’s quite unique in many respects… Like, the island has been overtaken by buggies. The electric golf cart type. Its not like there aren’t any cars there, there are even trucks, but certainly the main thing you re going to see is buggies. People take them to the pub, people drive them to work and most noticeably people use them as a means of transportation after a wedding. With ribbons and a “just married” sign. Really funny to see. We loved it here. All hail the monograph lectors!
