Designers Kate Thornley-Hall and Natalie Herbert share how they transformed food photographer and filmmaker Edward Pond’s cavernous studio into a warm and welcoming home. To give the open-concept space a more residential look, Kate and Natalie added walls to create zones. In the kitchen, they replaced some of the existing cabinets with a vintage storage cabinet, brought in an island and changed the backsplash. The dining area boasts a vintage dining table topped with three light fixtures that emphasize the 14-foot ceilings. A sectional provides ample seating in the living room, while a magenta chair plays off the navy walls and rug. To hide the dated industrial radiator, the designers created a custom counter with shelving to fit the modern aesthetic of the space. I came across a night photography and light painting tutorial video, and then that all changed. Learning photography is the secret to making beautiful videos. Most of what you learn transfers over directly. It s the key to making art with a camera. When taking photos, the best way to learn is to play. Getting ideas by watching videos about tips, tricks, hacks, how-to s, then going out and make your version of the idea. It s not stealing, it s inspiration, and it s how creatives get creative. We filmed this video in Harinera Nacional, and abandoned flour factory in the north of Mexico City. This place has an interesting history, it exploded about 15 years ago, and now has become a bit of a haven for graffiti artists, and urban exploring. Some important things to keep in mind when light painting: - You need a tripod to stabilize the camera - The camera cannot move. - You ll probably need to manual focus due to the darkness - Use light like a paintbrush. Paint the areas you want to show. - Use a long shutter speed (we did 30s) - Have fun. It usually takes a couple tries. Well, Whitehaven Beach has got to be one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. It has this sand that is so white it actually hurts your eyes and if you’re not wearing sunglasses for some bizarre reason, you have to go to the optometrist and have your eye balls checked out. Before doing any electrical work, ensure the power is turned off at the breaker panel. Professional installation is recommended for this project. 2. Run four 12 gauge conductors from a 240V breaker at the main electrical panel to the location 3. Attach battery brackets to structure. 4. Run electrical conduit between each bracket. 5. Run four 12 gauge conductors between each bracket. Strip the ends of the conductors and insert them into the appropriate slot of the bracket. 6. Attach each battery to the wall mount bracket. 7. Plug the battery into the port on the bracket. 8. Restore power to the circuit. Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva works with a local woodworker to build a keepsake box out of mango wood. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 6 hours Cost: $300 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List: Wide belt sander Jointer Table Saw Band Saw Flush cut saw Drill press Shopping List: Mango wood 3/8” thick Koa wood 1/4” thick Scrap pieces of Cuban mahogany Polyurethane glue Paste wax Super glue 5mm barrel hinges Steps: 1. If using a slab, ensure it has been dried to 14% humidity, then run it through a wide-belt sander to make it level. 2. Run the piece through a jointer to get a straight edge, then run it through a table saw to remove the live edge and cut the lumber into a piece about 8” wide. 3. Cut the dimensioned lumber into pieces about 3/8” thick on the band saw. Run the piece through a wide belt sander again. 4. Cut a dado that will hold the bottom in place on the table saw. 5. Sand the piece that will serve as the sides with fine grit sandpaper, starting at a 220 grit and ending at 1200 grit. 6. Apply a finish to the dado side of the board using polyurethane glue. Dab a few drops of glue, then carefully work the glue into the wood grain using a finishing rag. 7. Wipe down the finish after application and then again every 10-15 minutes until the glue has cured. 8. After the glue has cured, sand the piece again using 1200 grit sandpaper. 9. Apply a paste wax for the final finish. 10. Cut the pieces to length on a table saw, then miter the corners to 45º. 11. Glue the four corners together using polyurethane glue. Before installing the final piece, place a thin piece of koa wood in the dado to serve as the bottom. Use strap clamps to hold the miters true while the glue sets. 12. Once the glue has set, run the box through the table saw removing the top third. This will serve as the lid. 13. Use a jig to hold the box and the lid at 45º and run them separately through the table saw, creating a space for splines at the corners. 14. Use polyurethane glue to hold Cuban mahogany scraps in the splines. 15. Run the box and lid through the wide belt sander as the splines dry. 16. Once the glue has dried, use a flush cut saw to make the splines flush. 17. Glue an additional piece of mango to the sides of the lid using polyurethane glue. 18. Drill two 5mm holes on the box and the lid to accept barrel hinges. 19. Cut a chamfer on the bottom and top of the lid where the hinge holes are to ensure the lid opens. 20. Sand the piece and ease the corners. 21. Apply polyurethane glue as a finish to the outside pieces in the same manner as before. After it has dried, use paste wax again. 22. Install the barrel hinges using super glue to hold them in place. Mexico is full of haunted, creepy, and forgotten buildings, happy to have them back for some urbex! On our first night we went to Plaza Garibaldi, one of the most famous places in CDMX to see Mariachis. All through this area you can see hundreds of men dressed up in fancy clothing, serenading groups with traditional music. It s great place to eat, dance, and drink. It s full of locals, and it s very popular. I had a special challenge here for them. It was a surprise. I wasn t sure if everyone would think it was fun, but I know it was going to be a good travel vlog so... It would be worth it. In Plaza Garibaldi there is a drinking game called Los Toques Electricos. When you arrive there, you have to listen. You can hear a man walking around with two metal handles, clinking them together. This man has a box around his neck with cigars, gum, and a device that can deliver a 100V current to anyone brave enough to try. This is Los Toques. You hold the metal handles and he turns the dial to 10V, the skull ornament glows red, and the game begins. He told me tourists typically make it to 50V, but Mexicans often make it to 70V. You can try the game solo, or all hold hands in a circle, the shock delivered is the same. The point is to one-up your friends, and set the high score. Was it painful? Actually, I wouldn t describe it as pain. The feeling was similar to when your arm or leg falls asleep in the beginning, an aggressive tingle. One it hits about 40, it feels like you arms are two cans of compressed air, and are about to burst open. You cannot let go at this point, all your muscles in your arms are contracting as hard as they can. You are at the mercy of the operator. I would do this again. It was an amazing amount of fun. Just another unbelievable thing to film in country so full of unbelievable things.
