Today we have signed up to take a cooking class and we re going to be making Lagman (лагман) with an Uyghur family. And Laghman (лагман) is a dish that we ve been eating a lot since we arrived in Kyrgyzstan. It is one of our favorites. It is delicious, it is noodle-y, it is soupy. So let s go in and see how it is done. There are many types of Lagman (لەغمەن). So there are with fried Laghman (宋氏养生部). There is one type with um classic which is like the sauce is served separate from the noodle. So there is a type where like it is not liquid but with some sauce. Together mixed and also there are some different ingredients of the Lagman (宋氏养生部) so the noodles are the same but the sauces could be vary. Okay, so we re going to try making the noodles now. We need to stretch it out. And this is basically water, egg and flour. And I m not quite as graceful as our instructor here. Are you sure about that? Okay, so the Laghman (лагман) is here. It has been served. So check it out. We saw a bit of the preparation in the kitchen and we learned that basically they fry the ingredients, the meat and vegetables and then they add in the broth and turn it into a soup so that it is more flavorful. So yeah, let s dig right in. I m going to try and find some noodles. This is our first time to have it homemade. We ve only had this in restaurants so exciting times. Noodles are big. Look at how thick that is. Look at how long they are. Haha. Man, this is going to be messy. It looks awesome. Try to get a bit of everything. Nice? It is quite nice. So what do you think? Well, I love the noodles. I mean I was eating them plain. So I like them better with the sauce. Plain. I know, I had half of the thing by myself. So is it savory and spicy? Yeah, it is really good but you know what? I think I m going to add even more spice and see what that is like. Alright, so I like my spice so first we re going to add a little bit of vinegar for extra flavor. Give it a little bit of a kick. And this. I don t know how spicy this is. Like one little spoonful? Maybe? Very hot. And you just put an enormous amount on top. Let s see. Hahaha. It was really spicy. It was pretty spicy. Let s see. Alright. Alright time to actually try it with the extra enhancements. Enhancements. Better? I like the vinegar. It makes it a little more sour. So to wrap things up that was an awesome home cooked meal. It was cool to help with a little bit of the preparation. The noodles. We really didn t do too much and yeah this is a dish that is very common here in Kyrgyzstan so if you re visiting definitely have a Lagman (лағмон) and if you have a chance to prepare and cook it yourself then definitely we would recommend that as well. We used this as our base for 3 days and from there, we took a few different side trips to some of the most popular sights and attractions in the area. Here’s a taste of what we got up to: For this half-day trek, we drove from Bokonbayevo (Бөкөнбаев) to the Boz Salkyn Jailoo. Once we arrived at the yurt camp, we met our horses and set off on an incredibly scenic ride. The second stretch of the trek involved riding uphill through the forest, but once we broke through the tree line, we were treated to amazing views of the surrounding area. The horses got a little break to munch on wildflowers, and we sat down to enjoy a picnic. We had been hearing a lot about Skazka from fellow travellers staying at our yurt camp, so we were really looking forward to visiting. The canyon’s name is very fitting as the landscapes really do look straight out of a fairy tale. There are parts where the hills look like they’ve been painted in shades of terracotta, rust, and ochre, and then you also have natural rock formations that rise from the ground. It’s a really nice place for a light hike and a bit of photo taking. While the water of the sacred springs may be the main draw for pilgrims, for us, this attraction was more about the scenery. Narrow trails wind up, down, and around the hills and it makes for a fun hike through some pretty surreal landscapes. Just don’t forget to bring some water, because the sun can be really strong. The yurt-building workshop was located in Kyzyl-Tuu Village. Here we met Tolosun and his family, who all work together to bring the yurts to life. Everything you need for the yurts, from the wooden poles that make up the ceiling to the felt that provides insulation, is made here by different members of his family. We also learned that this family holds the record for fastest yurt-building time clocking in under 10 minutes. They did it a bit slower for us so that we could understand and help out with the process, but needless to say, they’re pros at this. Back in town, we made our way to Federation Salburuun, which is a group focused on keeping alive the tradition of eagle hunting that’s been passed down to nomads for centuries. Eagle hunting happens during the winter months, but during the summer months you can attend demonstrations to learn about this tradition and watch eagles training with furs and hides. Aside from eagle hunting, the group also practices archery and horseback archery. We can’t talk about our visit to Issyk Kul’s (Иссык-Куль) South Shore without also mentioning the Bel Tam Yurt Camp. Not only was staying in a yurt pretty cool, but we loved the friendly staff and the camaraderie amongst travellers at the camp. They had a massive dining tent where everyone gathered for communal dinners. The highlight was getting to know other travellers and swapping tips and stories about Kyrgyzstan. It all comes down to atmospheric density! When there s no atmosphere, you can do a powered descent in a flimsy tinfoil spacecraft like the Lunar Module, and when there s plenty of atmosphere you can do an unpowered descent via heat shield and parachutes like the space shuttle, Apollo command module, Soyuz, Huygens, etc. But on Mars with its thin air, you have to do both powered & unpowered descent, getting the worst of both worlds.
