See how designer Emily Griffin used beadboard panelling, antiques and a watery palette to transform a drab cottage into a stylish summer house. Emily started by replacing the drywall throughout the main living areas with beadboard panelling. She created a welcoming entryway with a country vibe by bringing in an antique bench and vintage-look mirror. The kitchen and dining areas were combined to create an open-concept space with a nine-foot dining table in the center. A servery tucked into the corner features reclaimed wood shelves. Just off the kitchen is a sitting room, where a stone fireplace steals the show. In the sunroom, a minimalist approach was taken to let the natural surroundings shine. Upstairs, the master bedroom has a sophisticated feel, thanks to quiet, patterned wallpaper and a colonial-style bed. Wear your protective beekeeping suit. 2. Remove the outer and inner tops of the bee hive 3. Use the smoker to add some smoke to the hive to calm the bees 4. Use the hive tool to remove an upper frame and check the bees 5. Remove the upper (or Super) bee box to expose the lower frames 6. Remove a lower frame and check the brood for hive health 7. Replace the Super bee box and remove the waxy-looking (Honey) frame 8. Use the bee brush to gently brush the bees off that frame and back into the hive. 9. Place the honey frame onto a tray and move to an indoor space. 10. Replace the inner and outer tops of the bee hive. 11. Spoon the beeswax and honey into a strainer and allow the honey to separate through the strainer into a bowl for 2-3 days. 12. If you want to use a Honey Extractor, remove the capping from the frame(s) 13. Place the frames into the extractor and spin the honey out. 14. Continually monitor the honey bee’s health in your hive, check for hive beetles, remove diseased parts, keep cover on for warmth and don’t over harvest the honey. And the gold medal of 2017 goes to! Visiting the Firefly sanctuary near Nanacamilpa, Tlaxcala, Mexico was completely unbelievable. Thousands of them, and spinning and swirling around us and into the tree tops. Lighting up IN SYNC with each other like a coordinated light show. It didn t feel like planet earth, it felt like I stood up to fast and was seeing stars, it felt like I stepped into fantasy. I drove 2 hours to stay at the eco lodge Piedra Canteada, deep in the pine forests of Oyamel. These insects show their faces for just a month every year to breed. This story might sound a little bit like the Monarch Butterfly Migration that we saw earlier in the year, but instead of flying from Canada, the fireflies are here all year round; you just can t see them. The firefly we know, isn t even a fly, it s a beetle. All beetles have a larval stage called a grub, and fireflies live in the dirt without wings for 20 months before erupting out of a pupae (a bit like a cocoon) for one single month to have a giant sex party. This show is easily one of the top 5 most amazing natural phenomena I have seen so far in my travels, and I can t believe it s not more popular. Bioluminescence continues to blow my mind. Glowing plankton, fireflies, mushrooms... I think it is incredible. Enjoy this quick video of the Firefly Sanctuary in Tlaxcala, I don t think anyone has filmed it yet on Youtube.
